Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

This exciting 3-Day Gorilla Trekking Adventure in Uganda, primarily explores Mgahinga National Park, Uganda’s smallest and probably most scenic national park. The top highlight of this African safari is the rare experience of trekking Uganda’s mountain gorillas in the wild, one of the most unforgettable wildlife encounters in the world.

Mgahinga National Park is the only park in Uganda where mountain gorillas co-exist with Golden monkeys hence a saying that it’s where “Gold meets silver”. Besides Gorillas Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has about 39 mammal and 79 bird species.

Animals like forest elephants, leopards, buffalos, warthogs/ bush pigs are rarely seen at the park. jackals, serval, duikers, and bushbucks. Birdlife in the park is also quite impressive with recorded species of species about 178 – 184. Notable bird species include the Rwenzori turaco, crowned hornbill, black kite, and crowned crane.

The tour begins and ends in Kampala and the drive takes about 8 to 10 hours and is about 6 hours drive from Kigali, Rwanda. The park is in the Kisoro District of far southwestern Uganda.

Day two, starts with an early morning breakfast and a trekking brief from the Uganda Wildlife Authority guide, before embarking on the once-in-a-lifetime experience of trekking mountain gorillas in the wild. We head off into the lush vegetation of Mgahinga National Park for endangered gorilla trekking, the highlight of visiting Uganda, if not Africa.

This gorilla walk can take up to six hours, so a reasonable degree of fitness and a sturdy pair of walking shoes are required. The thrill of encountering these gentle primates in the wild is well worth the sometimes challenging trek through the thick undergrowth.

Once we find the African Mountain Gorillas we spend some time watching them feed, groom, and interact with each other. We get to hear the gorillas communicating with one another and marvel at the sheer size of the dominant adult male gorillas, called Silverbacks. Encountering these giant apes is one of Africa’s most poignant wildlife experiences.

Each gorilla encounter is unique, offering its own rewards. We generally get up close to the adult gorillas to watch them feeding, grooming, and resting, as well as witness the young gorillas at play.   In the afternoon we experience the beautiful Batwa culture.

The Batwa culture trail in the park gives you an opportunity to learn about their unique cultural heritage as the forest indigenous inhabitants. The Batwa Elders will accompany you and share amazing information about their culture and lifestyle while they lived in the forest – they will demonstrate their hunting skills and vast knowledge of medicinal plants.

On day three, we drive back to Kampala making a stop at Mbarara town where we have lunch. We continue to Kampala or Entebbe bringing this 3 Days 2 Nights Mgahinga National Park Uganda Road Safari in Uganda to a close. Airport drop-off can be arranged free of charge if you are flying out on the last day of the safari.
