This 2-day Tanzania short safari by road is an incredible wildlife tour to Mikumi National Park, a less-crowded Southern Game Park of Tanzania. Beginning and ending in Dar Es Salaam, this budget-friendly safari to Mikumi includes road transport in a well-maintained 4×4 safari vehicle in the company of a friendly, professional driver-guide and one-night full board accommodation in superb quality, well-located lodge/ camp.
The package also includes 2 game drives plus all park entrance fees. The picked-up/drop-off is from your hotel or from the airport.
The journey begins with a drive to Mikumi National Park located 280 kilometers (roughly 4-hour drive) away from the largest Tanzania city Dar es Salaam. The park is located near the town of Morogoro which is 107 kilometers away from the park in the middle of the famous mountains in Tanzania.
Mikumi borders the African largest national reserve that is Selous Game Reserve in the South. The afternoon is dedicated to 4×4 game drives in Mikumi National Park where we are likely to spot elephants, Buffalo, Wildebeest, Zebra, Warthog, and an assortment of Antelopes roaming around.
Predators found here include wild Dogs, Lions, Jackals, Hyenas, and even Leopards. We may also see Giraffes, Hippos, Baboons, and Vervet Monkeys. Mikumi is also one of Tanzania’s important birding areas, with over 400 species recorded here.
Species include Boehm’s bee-eater, lilac-breasted roller, yellow-throated longclaw, Dickinson’s kestrel, straw-tailed whydah, Bateleur eagle, superb starling, and African fish eagle. At the end of an action-packed day of game viewing, we proceed to our comfortable lodge/ camp overnight.
Accommodation options include Mikumi wildlife Camp, Vuma Hills Camp, Stanley’s Kopje Camp, Tan Swiss Lodge, Angalia Tented Camp, Asante Afrika Camp, and Afrika Yangu Camp and Lodge. The following morning, we get up bright and early for a half-day of game viewing in Mikumi National Park.
On the open grasslands of the Mkata Plains, we are likely to see numerous herbivores including Sable, Hartebeest, Impala, and Eland (Africa’s largest antelope), amongst other antelopes. Elephants are also commonly sighted in Mikumi. In the dry season, we may be lucky enough to see herds of up to 300 Buffalos. There are also Crocodiles and Hippos.
After lunch, we hit the road, returning to coastal Dar es Salaam where our Southern Tanzania Mikumi short Safari started.

Mikumi Wildlife Game Drives: The Mikumi National Park has a big wildlife population where you will definitely see the “Big Five”. Animals include Baboon, Monkey, Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Giraffe, Zebra, Eland, Buffalo, Kudu, Bushbuck, Waterbuck, and Lichtenstein’s Hartebeest.
Mikumi Bird Watching: More than 400 bird species have been recorded, with such colorful common residents as the lilac-breasted roller, yellow-throated longclaw, and bateleur eagle joined by a host of European migrants during the rainy season.
Udzungwa National Park: Mikumi is also a great base for exploring the road-free Udzungwa National Park an hour away – in fact, the only real option since there is no accommodation in the park. Here you’ll find some extremely rare birds, several endemic species of monkey (including the Sanje-crested mangabey and the red hehe colobus), and some wonderfully adventurous rainforest hikes to waterfalls and panoramic 2,000m viewpoints
Mikumi bush breakfasts, sundowners, and picnic lunches in the bush. What better way to watch the sun go down than with a cool drink, overlooking the grunting hippos in a waterhole?

0800 Hours: Morning after breakfast pick up from your hotel or airport in Dar es Salaam and depart to Mikumi National Park where you will arrive in time for lunch (4 to 5 hours Drive).
1300 Hours: Enjoy a sumptuous meal at the Lodge/ Camp.
1500 Hours: After lunch proceed for an afternoon game drive in the park, home to Elephant, Lion, Wild dog, Zebra, Hyena, Buffalo, Wildebeest, Eland, Hartebeest, Crocodile, Lizard, etc. Over 300 species of birds have been observed in this park.

Day 2: Mikumi National Park – Drive to Dar es salaam
0800 Hours: Enjoy an early morning breakfast, and leave the lodge for an early morning game drive in the park Mikumi’s vegetation includes woodland, swamp, and grassland with two water holes, Mkata and Chamgore. Apart from the saddle-bill stork, hammer kop, and malachite kingfisher, you will also find a monitor lizard and a deadly python inhabiting the pools.
1130 Hours: Enjoy an early hot lunch at the Lodge/ Camp.
1300 Hours: Afternoon drive back to Dar-es-Salaam.
1800 Hours: We drop you off at the hotel of your choice or home.
