Mount Meru Arusha Tanzania

This is a short and rewarding 3-day Hiking Trek up Mount Meru in Tanzania. Comfortable mountain huts accommodation is included during the hike along the hiking trail. This 3-day Mount Meru Hike is an ideal add on to wildlife safaris in Tanzania, especially to the famous Northern Tanzanian Safari Circuit close by.

This 3-day Mount Meru Hiking tour begins with a pick up from Arusha, followed by a road transfer to Arusha National Park to begin our trek up Mount Meru. After completing the necessary paperwork at the entrance gate of Arusha National Park, a trekking team of local porters join you, and then continue to the nearby Momella Gate.

For the first scenic leg of the hike an armed park ranger accompanies us through game territory, helping to spot any roaming Giraffes and Buffalo in the area. From there we hike into acacia forest, following the Southern Route up the slopes. A steady two-hour long climb brings us to Maio Falls and lovely pastures where we enjoy a picnic.

From the falls we hike to the ‘Arched Fig Tree’ a well-known attraction that your ranger tells us more about. Learn how the tree formed its arched shape, framing our path. We walk on for another one and a half hours or so, until we get to the Miriakamba Hut where you spend a night.

The following morning you continue the hike up Meru, following some wooden steps up a steep track. As we climb higher up, temperatures drop making for easier climbing in the cooler conditions.  After about two more hours of hiking, the ‘Mgongo wa Tembo’ (Elephant Back) view point is reached.

Here we stop to admire the scenery and take a well-deserved rest, at an altitude of around 3200 meters. On the next stretch of the hike we make the transition from rain-forest vegetation into more open bush, reaching our overnight stop, Saddle Hut at midday.

Arriving at our next hiking hut, located at 3550 meters above sea level, we take a break and have lunch. In the afternoon, you can take an optional one and a half hour walk to Little Meru at 3820 meters.

The Little Meru peak offers fantastic views of Mount Kilimanjaro some 80 kilometers away, as well as over Arusha National Park. Returning to the hut from the optional walk, a warm dinner awaits, at the Saddle Hut.

Day three of this Mount Meru Hike starts in the early hours of the day, way before sunrise. Around midnight, in fact! We climb steeply to Rhino Point (3,800 meters) and on to Cobra Point (4350 meters).

We reach the summit (4,566 meters) for sunrise and there is a possibility to see Kilimanjaro Peak above the clouds. The final part of the climb is along a spectacular narrow ridge-line between the sheer inner cliffs and the sloping outer wall of the crater.

We take a short rest and brunch at Saddle Hut before continuing the descent to the Momella gate. An Africa Spice driver guide will meet you at the conclusion of your adventure to take you to your Arusha accommodation where the tour ends.

Starting from Momela Gate, the track passes through open grassland with cape Buffalo and Warthogs. With luck, you may also see Giraffes, Zebras, Monkeys, Antelope, and Elephants along the route.

Continue a steady climb through the montane forest. You can have your lunch at the famous “Fig tree”. After lunch, the trek continues through a less dense forest, where there are lots of birds and Monkeys including the black and white Colobus.

By mid-afternoon, you will have your first close views of the towering cliffs and the Ash Cone.

Miriakamba Hut, situated in idyllic grassy glade, is reached in time to enjoy the afternoon sun and beautiful views over the surrounding plains towards Kilimanjaro.

Accommodation Option: Miriakampa Hut
Meal Plan {Lunch & Dinner}

Day 2: Hike Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut, afternoon Hike up Little (Meru Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3500 Metres): 3 Hours to 5 Hours walking)

The walk from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle below Little Meru is a steep sustained climb all the way.

Starting through beautiful and lush montane forest, the path continues beyond the halfway point of Elephant Back Ridge and carries on uphill through the giant heather and other moorland vegetation to reach Saddle Hut for lunch.

In the afternoon, you can make the short climb to the nearby summit of Little Meru (3,820 Metres/ 12,533 Feet) for superb views. It takes about 1 hour to walk up and 30 minutes to walk down. The ascent is 1,056 meters/ 3,465 Feet.

Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 3: Hike to Summit then Down to Trail Head, Return to Moshi/ Arusha (Saddle Hut to the summit to Momella Gate: 12 Hours to 14 Hours walking)

Summit day has an early start at around 1200AM. There is a 1-hour steep climb to Rhino Point (3,800 Metres/ 12,467 Feet), and then the path continues along a ridge of ash and rock to reach Cobra Point (4,350 Metres/ 14,272 Feet).

The summit of Socialist Peak (4,566 Metres) is an hour further on a steep path with magnificent views of Kilimanjaro. Depending on your speed, you can enjoy sunrise at Cobra Point or the summit.

The views are stunning: the cliffs of the Crater rim, the Ash Cone rising from the crater floor, Kilimanjaro floating on the morning clouds, and the Rift Valley.

The route back to Rhino Point in the sharp morning light along a narrow ridge between the sloping outer wall of the crater and the sheer cliffs of the inner wall is one of the most dramatic and exhilarating walks in Africa.
