Nyerere National Park

This is a wonderful 3-day Tanzania road safari to Nyerere National Park (Selous), a superb holiday destination for both family safaris and African honeymoons. We explore Nyerere National Park (Selous) on 4×4 game drives in an open-sided safari vehicle.

Africa’s largest National Park, Nyerere is an incredibly vast wilderness area spanning 54 600 km². That’s three times the size of the famous Kruger National Park, four times bigger than the Serengeti, and larger than Switzerland!

Beginning and ending in Dar Es Salaam, the tour travels to Nyerere National Park (formerly the northern part of Selous Game Reserve), located 300 km from the capital city of Tanzania. Nyerere National Park (Selous) has Africa’s greatest populations of Elephants, Buffalos, Lions, and Hippo.

Along the way, we pause to have a picnic lunch as you enjoy the scenic drive to Nyerere National Park. (Travelling time some 6 – 7 hours). In the afternoon you embark on your first open 4×4 game drive in the wild Nyerere National Park. Enjoy a boat trip on Rufiji River where Crocodiles, Hippos, and grazing game can be seen. Rufiji River is especially rich in birds.

Then head to our accommodation for the night in Nyerere National Park.  Accommodation options include Beho Beho camp, Siwandu Camp, Lake Manze Camp, Sand Rivers Selous and Selous Impala Camp.

Spend day two exploring Nyerere National Park (Selous) on 4×4 game drives in an open-sided safari vehicle. Common wildlife sightings include Hippos, endangered wild dogs, Wildebeest, and Lions, along with plenty of plains game such as Zebras, Giraffes, and a variety of Antelopes.

Nyerere National Park is home to the Big Five of Africa. In addition to Lions, Buffalos and Elephants are commonly sighted. Leopards are occasionally seen but Rhinos are only found in the southern part of Nyerere National Park.

There are plenty of Crocodiles and spotted Hyenas so chances of spotting these carnivores are high. Antelope species include Sable, Puku, greater Kudu, Eland, Lichtenstein’s Hartebeest, Bushbuck, Duiker, Klipspringer, Oryx, Waterbuck, and an abundance of Impalas.

At the end of our exciting day of game viewing in Nyerere National Park, we return to the lodge/ camp for dinner and overnight.

Day three begins with a hearty breakfast in the heart of the untamed African bush, then we set off on our final game drive in Nyerere National Park as we exit the park and return back to Dar es Salaam where our 3 day Tanzania road Safari adventure comes to a close.

Nyerere National Park Tanzania Highlights | What to See and Do

Fishing Trip: Fishing can be done on the Rufiji River.

Bird Watching: There are more than 400 different species of birds recorded in Nyerere National Park.

Hot Springs & Selous Grave: There are several Hot Springs hidden within the Beho Beho Hills and surroundings in the Nyerere National Park (Selous).

Cultural Visits: You can visit a local village on the outskirts of the Nyerere National Park, and walk around on the farms, seeing the different crops planted by the villagers.

Nyerere National Park Game Drive Safaris: Game Drives are the ideal way to see more of the Nyerere National Park and its many different types of wildlife.

The Game Drives are usually extended and taken in open-sided 4×4 vehicles. Halfway through the day, we stop somewhere scenic for a well-earned picnic lunch.

Boat Cruises (2 to 3 Hours): Are quite a unique experience – Nyerere National Park is one of the very few parks in Africa where you can view game from the water and you have a much higher chance of seeing a larger variety of wildlife inside the Reserve than outside.

The boat trips allow you to watch animals come down to drink and enjoying the wonderful variety of birdlife.

Game Walks Are probably the most fascinating way to truly experience the wonders of Nyerere National Park.  Out of the 4WD vehicle and being on foot is a humbling experience in this vast, untouched land.

Set at a leisurely pace, the walks are not intended to find big game; instead, it offers guests an education into the lives of the smaller animals as well as the birdlife, insects, flora, and fauna.
