Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

This short 3 day Uganda Gorilla tour offers a particularly rare and special mountain gorilla experience – truly one of the most impressive wildlife encounters on earth! Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in southwestern Uganda and is best known for its primate populations, being home to about half the world’s mountain gorillas, at over 300 endangered gorillas.

Bwindi is also a birding paradise, home to 348 bird species, and is one of Uganda’s best bird watching destinations supporting nearly all of the Albertine Rift endemic species found in Uganda, along with several Red Data Book species.

The trip begins from Kampala, the capital city of Uganda where you drive southwest to Masaka, stopping en route to have snacks and take photos at the equator. Then we travel west to Igongo Cultural Village, pausing to visit the village centre and fascinating Ankole Museum, housing interesting cultural and historical displays.

From Igongo we continue west to Mbarara where we have lunch at a hotel and continue to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, home to nearly half of the African mountain gorillas surviving in the wild today. Arriving in the southern area of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park we head to our accommodation.

On day two, we are up early for breakfast, before our gorilla trek; which starts with a briefing at 08h00. The short talk is given by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) staff and covers gorilla trekking procedures and rules.

This gorilla walk can take up to six hours, so a reasonable degree of fitness and a sturdy pair of walking shoes are required. The thrill of encountering these gentle primates in the wild is well worth the sometimes challenging trek through the thick undergrowth.

Once we find the African Mountain Gorillas we spend some time watching them feed, groom, and interact with each other. We generally get up close to the adult gorillas to watch them feeding, grooming, and resting, as well as witnessing the young gorillas at play.

The afternoon is spent exploring a local community on foot, to gain insight into the ways of the Ugandan people living near Bwindi Park. See what rural life is like in this part of Africa, meet the locals and support the Buhoma community in the process.

On day three, we leave the Bwindi Forests behind, driving back to the capital of Uganda, Kampala. We drive via Mbarara and Masaka, stopping for lunch and crossing back over the equator along the way. Arriving in Kampala we drop you off at your accommodation or transfer you to the Entebbe International Airport for your onward flight.

Our scenic drive takes us through the foothills of Mount Rwenzori towards Fort Portal, where we stop for lunch. From Fort Portal, we continue to Kampala or Entebbe bringing this 3 Days 2 Nights Bwindi Forest National Park Safari in Uganda to a close.

After an early morning breakfast and guide briefing, set off for your gorilla tracking in the forests of Bwindi. Gorilla tracking can be strenuous because of Bwindi’s challenging terrain.

You will need to carry packed lunch and drinking water and wear comfortable boots or sturdy shoes, as well as carry a light rain jacket as Bwindi has unpredictable weather.

Walking sticks will be available from the park rangers. A friendly encounter with these gentle giants will be your most exciting experience! For conservation purposes, time spent with the gorillas is limited to one hour.

The ranger guide always briefs you on how to behave with these gentle giants. After an encounter with a group of gorillas some with silverbacks, one can say “a sight of Gorillas has made my lifetime tour”.

In the evening, you will have a cultural walk to interact with the local people. Participate in captivating traditional performances presented by Women’s groups or orphan children groups.

Note that the fees you pay for these performances go directly to improve the welfare of families around the park.
