Kibale National Park

This short and sweet 3-day Uganda Chimpanzee Trekking Safari package visits Kibale National Park located 320 km from Kampala. The tour could begin and end in Kampala, Jinja, or Entebbe in Uganda. Kibale National Park is the primate capital of the world that harbors the greatest variety and concentration of primates not found anywhere else.

Departing Kampala, we drive through the dense jungles and papyrus wetlands of the Nile Delta. We pause for lunch en route to the Kibale National Park, near the towering Ruwenzori Mountains, known as the Mountains of the Moon. In the afternoon we embark on a guided walk in the national park, exploring the crater lakes area and experiencing the local culture.

Day two begins with breakfast followed by chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park, home to an impressive 500 chimpanzees. Before heading into the forest we are briefed on the trekking procedures. While trekking in the jungle the guide tells you more about the chimpanzees, other primates, and local flora and fauna, making for an interesting adventure.

The dense jungles of Kibale Park are the best place to view chimpanzees in Africa. The chimpanzees are commonly found feeding on fig tree fruits in the game park and have been habituated to humans since 1992. Kibale National Park covers 795 km² and consists mostly of a vast tract of equatorial rainforest.

This national park is home to numerous forest wildlife species, boasting one of the highest concentrations of primates in the world. The 13 primate species include rare I’Hoest monkeys, black-and-white colobus, Uganda red colobus monkeys, red-tailed and blue monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and bush babies.

Kibale is also home to leopards, bush pigs, elephants, and butterflies among others. In the afternoon we visit Kibale National Park Bigodi wetland sanctuary located 6km south of the Kibale National Park visitor centre at Kanyanchu. The sanctuary is good for spotting butterflies and primates, with eight different species here, including grey-cheeked mangabey.

Kibale National Park is home to different bird species especially the great blue turaco, white-winged warbler, rumped tinker bird, rare papyrus gonolek, and the other aquatic life found in the wetlands.

Alternatively, we participate in one of the many activities available including village walks,  basket-weaving demonstrations, dance and drama performances, and fun interpretive meals (book in advance) where your hosts share the stories behind the local food they serve you.

On day three we visit Amabere Ga Nya Mwiru caves where you will explore the caves that have a fascinating history, the waterfalls, and the Crater Lakes tour. Lunch is enjoyed en route as we drive (5-6 hours) to Kampala or Entebbe.
