Beginning and ending in Arusha, Tanzania, this affordable 3 day Tanzania road Safari offers an excellent way to discover two of the most popular parks in Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit. You will enjoy incredible game viewing in Lake Manyara National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater.

Begin from Arusha where you take a scenic countryside drive to Lake Manyara National Park located 125 km (78 miles) west of Arusha town, which is a 2-hour drive. On our route to Lake Manyara National Park, we pass through Mto wa Mbu village, home to 120 different tribes.

On entering the park, the road takes us through a lush jungle-like forest, home to baboons and monkeys, before opening on to a grassy floodplain. Further inland the legendary tree-climbing lions and elephants can be found in a narrow belt of woodland. Large buffaloes, wildebeest, giraffes, and herds of zebra congregate on the grassy plains.

As well as the many animals, Manyara is home to prolific birdlife and is famous for the huge flocks of flamingos along the lakeshore. We stop for a picnic lunch during our game viewing drive in the  Park.

After game viewing, we head to our lodge/ camp inside the game park. Accommodation options include Manyara Wildlife Safari Camp, andBeyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge, Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge, and Kirurumu Manyara Lodge.

On Day 2 we take a scenic drive towards the Ngorongoro Crater to the northwest. We travel up the side of the Great Rift Valley to Karatu, stopping to take photographs and admire the breathtaking views over Lake Manyara and the floor of the lush valley.

We continue to the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater. Descending into the largest unflooded caldera in the world we embark on a game drive in search of the amazing abundance of wildlife found here.

The Ngorongoro Crater is home to Africa’s Big Five (lions, elephants, buffalos, rhinos, and leopards), boasting one of the highest concentrations of lions in the world. Almost all of the wild animal species found on the savannahs of East Africa inhabit this compact crater.

Ngorongoro offers first-class game viewing and is considered one of the best places to capture the endangered black rhino on film. The conservation area is home to over 25 000 larger animals, the highest density of animals inhabiting any one area in Africa.

We stop for a picnic lunch during our game viewing drive in the vast Crater, ascending the crater walls in the afternoon. We head to our next overnight safari camp/ lodge. Accommodation options include Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge, Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge and the Manor At Ngorongoro.

On the last day of our 3-day Tanzania road Safari, we leave the crater highlands and return to Arusha where our safari began.

Safari Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: Arusha – Drive to Lake Manyara National Park

0800 Hours: After breakfast at your hotel in Arusha we meet our professional tours guide/ driver who will deliver a short safari info briefing, after which, we travel to the Lake Manyara National Park.

The drive from Arusha to Lake Manyara takes about 2 ½ hours and we shall cover about 130 kilometres.

1030 Hours: Arrive at Mto Wa Mbu village situated next to the entrance of the Lake Manyara National Park.  After checking into the park we proceed for a game drive.

1300 Hours: We enjoy our picnic lunch at a picnic site within the park.

1400 Hours: Afternoon continues with our game drive. Lake Manyara is one of the very few places in Africa to see tree-climbing lions, which we may declare our day’s quest, being so thoroughly sated with the big herds of preceding parks.

The tree climbing lions are the park’s main attraction.  Why these lions habitually climb trees is still up for debate but viewing a pride relaxing in an acacia tree is an incredible site.

The park is also famous for its elephant, a huge number of baboons and due to its varied landscape has an impressive range of other game including wildebeest, buffalo, hippo, flamingo, zebra, warthog, waterbuck, dik-dik and impala.

The birding here is very good, especially raptors. You can also see pelicans, storks, kingfishers and many other birds. It is also a famous jungle, where early Tanzanian movies were filmed.

1800 Hours: Procced to our accommodations.
