4 Day Nyerere National Park Tanzania Safari

4 Day Nyerere National Park Tanzania Safari | Nyerere Southern Tanzania Safari | 4 Days 3 Nights Nyerere National Park Road Safari | Nyerere National Park Safari Southern Tanzania | Nyerere National Park (Selous) Safari Holidays | 4 Days 3 Nights Tanzania Safari Wildlife Holidays Tours

Nyerere National Park

This is a wonderful 4-day Tanzania road safari to Nyerere National Park (formerly the northern part of Selous Game Reserve), a superb holiday destination for both family safaris and African honeymoons. This Southern Tanzania Safari begins with a drive from the metropolis of Dar es Salaam to the wild Nyerere National Park located in South-Eastern Tanzania (roughly 230 km – takes around 5-6 hours).

Nyerere National Park covers 30,893 square kilometers and is actually Africa’s largest stand-alone National Park, and one of the largest in the world. The park was carved out from the Selous Game reserve, a huge wilderness area and safari destination in Southern Tanzania.

The afternoon is spent on a leisurely boat cruise along the Rufiji River giving you a ground-level perspective of wallowing Hippos, cruising Crocodiles, and a myriad of birds and wildlife as they wander down to the river bank to drink.

At the end of our exciting day of game viewing in an open-sided safari vehicle, we head to the lodge/ camp in Nyerere National Park for dinner and overnight. Accommodation options include Serena Mivumo River Lodge, Selous Serena Camp, Mbuyu Safari Camp, Beho Beho Camp, Stiegler’s Gorge Camp, Rufiji River Camp, and Sand Rivers.

Day 2 & day 3 are spent on morning and afternoon game drives in an open-sided safari vehicle. As your safari is private your game drive timings are flexible, and useful if you are traveling with children, or are on a honeymoon. What animals will we see in Selous? Common wildlife sightings include Hippos, endangered wild Dogs, Wildebeest, and Lions, along with plenty of plains game such as Zebras, Giraffes, and a variety of Antelopes.

Nyerere National Park is home to the Big Five of Africa. In addition to Lions, Buffalos and Elephants are commonly sighted. Leopards are occasionally seen but Rhinos are only found in the southern part of Nyerere National Park.

There are plenty of Crocodiles and spotted Hyenas so the chances of spotting these carnivores are high. Antelope species include Sable, Puku, Greater Kudu, Eland, Lichtenstein’s Hartebeest, Bushbuck, Duiker, Klipspringer, Oryx, Waterbuck, and an abundance of Impalas.

Day 4 starts with an early morning bush walk safari with a guided armed ranger and later exit the park and drive to Dar Es Salaam arriving in the evening where our 4-day Southern Tanzania Safari adventure comes to a close.

Selous Game Reserve Tanzania Highlights | What to See and Do

Fishing Trip: Fishing can be done on the Rufiji River.

Bird Watching: There are more than 400 different species of birds recorded in Nyerere National Park.

Hot Springs & Selous Grave: There are several Hot Springs hidden within the Beho Beho Hills and surroundings in Nyerere National Park.

Cultural Visits: You can visit a local village on the outskirts of Nyerere National Park, and walk around on the farms, seeing the different crops planted by the villagers.

Nyerere National Park Game Drive Safaris: Game Drives are the ideal way to see more of Nyerere National Park and its many different types of wildlife. The Game Drives are usually extended and taken in open-sided 4×4 vehicles. Halfway through the day, we stop somewhere scenic for a well-earned picnic lunch.

Boat Cruises (2 to 3 Hours): These are quite a unique experience – the Selous is one of the very few game reserves in Africa where you can view wildlife from the water and you have a much higher chance of seeing a larger variety of wildlife inside the park than outside. The boat trips allow you to watch animals come down to drink and enjoy the wonderful variety of birdlife.

Game Walks Are probably the most fascinating way to truly experience the wonders of Nyerere National Park.  Out of the 4WD vehicle and being on foot is a humbling experience in this vast, untouched land. Set at a leisurely pace, the walks are not intended to find big game; instead, it offers guests an education into the lives of the smaller animals as well as the birdlife, insects, flora, and fauna.
