Serengeti National Park

This 4 day Tanzania road safari takes you to one of the best game parks on Tanzania’s famous Northern Safari Circuit – Serengeti National Park. The Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s most famous park and is loved for its sweeping plains, abundant wildlife, and the breathtaking annual Great Migration.

The park is situated in northwest Tanzania and joins the Masaai Mara Game Reserve at its northern border with Kenya. Beginning and ending in Arusha, the tour heads northwest towards Serengeti National Park. The distance from Arusha is 325 km and the drive takes around eight hours.

The drive takes us past the village of Mto Wa Mbu, Karatu town, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and along the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater to the outer slopes towards the open plains of the Serengeti. Driving past rural villages where the pastoralist Maasai people live we make our way to the Serengeti National Park.

We enjoy game-viewing along the way into the central area of Serengeti Park, known as the Seronera section. Here you will see a rich variety of wildlife roaming the African savannahs that stretch out as far as the eyes can see.

The Serengeti teems with animals: Wildebeest, Thomson’s Gazelle, Zebra, Giraffe, Eland, Topi, Kongoni, Impala, and other Antelope. It is also home to Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, and Hyenas. Our overnight camp/ lodge is located in the central part of the Serengeti National Park, deep in the bush.

Accommodation options include Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge, Nyikani camp, Meliá Serengeti Lodge, Kichakani Camp, Four Seasons Safari Lodge, Sayari Mara Camp, Kusini Camp, Faru Faru Lodge, and Olakira Migration Camp.

Day 2 and 3 are spent exploring the Serengeti National Park on game drives. Here we will hopefully see the Big Five of Africa (Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant, and Buffalo), as well as a dazzling assortment of other wildlife.

The plains of the Serengeti are home to millions of herd animals including over sixteen species of Antelope, Elephant, Zebra, Giraffe, Rhino, Hippo, and Aardvark. With such a healthy and abundant population of ‘prey’, a vast number of predators also call Serengeti home.

From tiny insects like the Praying Mantis all the way through smaller cats like the Serval and Caracal to Leopards, Cheetah and the mighty Lion, Wild Dogs, Jackals, Foxes, and Hyena are all found here.

With over 540 species of bird, Serengeti is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Tiny sunbirds, tall and lanky Ostriches, less-than-pretty Vultures, and graceful, soaring birds of prey are but a tiny sample of what to see here.

During and after the rainy seasons you may be lucky enough to catch the Great Migration (mostly Wildebeest, Gazelles, and Zebras) in full force. Usually, between October and November, and again from April to June, masses of plains game migrate across the rivers and plains of the Serengeti ecosystem.

The timing and path of the Great Migration vary from season to season, but your safari guide uses his or her knowledge to find the optimal spots for catching the spectacle. Activities include guided game drives and hot-air balloon safaris which enable you to witness this phenomenon.

On day 4 we return to Arusha. Our magical 4 day Serengeti road Safari comes to a close in the evening in Arusha.

Serengeti National Park Highlights | What to Do and See

Serengeti Visitor Center: The Serengeti Visitor Centre is worth a stop for its self-guided walking path that provides informative signs and exhibits about the history of the Serengeti, its ecosystem, and its wildlife.

The Serengeti’s Great Migration: Throughout the year huge herds of wildebeest and zebra move in a clockwise direction around the vast plains, searching for fresh grazing grounds.

Witnessing the migration in the Serengeti is really as good as it gets in terms of your Tanzania Safari.

Serengeti daytime game drives:  The main attraction here is the wildlife. Serengeti National Park houses a huge population of large mammals, including Giraffes, Baboons, Elephants, Hippos, and of course Lions.

You’ll also come across more than 500 species of birds, most notably, Ostriches.

When you tire of gazing at grazers, head to Moru Kopjes to mingle with Rhinos or to the Retina Hippo Pool to watch these massive mammals splash about.

Serengeti Balloon Safaris: There are no words that can describe the experience of floating over the Serengeti justice.” Get a birds-eye view of the park as you ride alongside the sun.

The flight lasts about an hour, after which passengers gather around a table, surrounded by the park’s lush plains, for an “Out of Africa” English-style breakfast.
