Experience an incredible 6-day beach holiday at the Fanjove Private Island in the Songo Songo Archipelago off the coast of Tanzania. Fanjove Private Island Lodge is part of the Songo Songo Archipelago, located 140 km south of Dar es Salaam in the Indian Ocean, opposite Kilwa on Tanzania mainland.

Flights are available from Dar es Salaam to Songo Songo (1 hour), the main Island of the archipelago, and from here some 40 minutes by a traditional dhow sailing boat to Fanjove Island. The island is less than a kilometer long and was previously uninhabited, save for some local fishermen who used it as an occasional fishing base.

Nobody lives on Fanjove except guests and the lodge staff. The lodge is open from June through March, and children are welcome from the age of 6 years and above. Fanjove Private Island Lodge has only 6 Banda’s (guest huts), each featuring an en-suite bathroom with a flushing toilet and solar-heated shower open to the sky under the stars.

The bandas are furnished with big beds with mosquito netting, and a chest with lock and key, and are all powered by solar energy for lighting and heating water to minimize environmental impact on the island.

The individual Bandas are distributed along the main beach to guarantee privacy, each with a view of the ocean. The dhow-shaped Bandas are all made of wood from planted wood and makuti (palm leaves), only the bathroom is built in concrete but fitted in harmony with the rest of the building.

The Bandas are designed to be completely open at the front to make the best of the view, with doors and curtains in different combinations at guests’ convenience for protection from wind and sun. There is a balcony upstairs for guests wishing to enjoy the view from a higher point.

The lounge, bar, and dining areas are almost invisible from the boat on arrival, shaded by the beach palms and built with natural materials blending with the island background. The lodge serves delicious meals of fusion cuisine reflecting the multicultural influence of the historical past of the area; dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice.

Other facilities include charging points for electronic devices in the dining area and laundry service, Various water activities are available on the island, including snorkeling and diving in the crystal blue waters – equipment for snorkeling and diving is available at the lodge.

Other activities include kayak safari, snorkeling amongst tropical fish, dhow sailing, sand bank excursion, Fanjove Island Trail & nature walks, bird watching, fishing, taking a cruise looking for dolphins, and enjoying the slower pace of life. On the island payment for extras may be made with cash only.

This is the start of your escape! Depart by flight from Dar Es Salaam or Zanzibar 0930 hours to Fanjove Island to arrive at Songo Songo Island at 1145 hours. (not included; we will arrange this as required for you). Meet and greeted by smiling staff from Fanjove Private Island Lodge and transfer to the island by boat. 

Gaze out over the ocean as you realize this is your home for the next 5 wonderful days. This evening the chef will treat you to some superb cuisine, perhaps including the freshest seafood, and later you’ll sink into your bed, falling asleep to the sound of waves lapping the shore.

Day 2,3,4, & 5: Fanjove Private Island

Fanjove is a classic deserted island. Fun activities include diving, snorkeling, dolphin excursion, bird watching, kayak safari, sand bank excursion, dhow sailing, fishing and Fanjove nature trail.

Armed with a map from the lodge, take a tour of your domain, following trails inland, walking along the beach, or take to the water in a kayak for a full circumnavigation! The lodge supplies diving and snorkeling equipment to let you observe shoals of fish, turtles and colorful corals, an entrancing underwater world.

Take a boat cruise to spot bottle-nose and spinner dolphins, and with luck you’ll be able to go swimming with these playful, intelligent creatures. Spending time among natural wonders is a real pleasure and privilege on Fanjove.
