Northern Tanzania Safari

Explore some of the most beautiful wildlife regions in Tanzania’s northern safari circuit on this sensational 6-day road safari. Start your journey in the Ngorongoro Crater for a classic Big 5 safari experience, before traveling to the Serengeti National Park, home to one of the world’s greatest concentrations of wildlife and the majority of the Great Wildebeest Migration.

Then end off your trip in the Tarangire National Park, famous for a large number of elephants, baobabs, and climbing lions.

Beginning and ending in Arusha, the trip travels to the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater. The afternoon is spent one of the many activities available such as nature walk in the nearby villages and into the lively town of Karatu and cultural tour to a Masai village.

The following day after breakfast we descend the steep crater walls to explore this wilderness teeming with wildlife. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the densest mammalian population in Africa, with around 25,000 large animals.

The diverse habitats found on the fertile crater floor support a variety of wildlife, including Lion, Leopard, Elephants, Monkeys, Hyena, Jackal and herds of Zebra, Wildebeest, Buffalo, and other Antelope species.

Other wildlife in the Ngorongoro includes Serval Cat, Cheetah, Jackal, Grant’s, and Thompson’s Gazelles along with approximately 400 species of bird. Animals are free to leave or enter the crater but most of them stay because of the plentiful water and food available on the crater floor throughout the year.

Along the way, we stop at a hippo pool for a picnic lunch in this wildlife haven. Then we drive back up the crater walls, admiring the beautiful views and looking out for animals.

On day three, we head further along the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater and drive down the outer slopes towards the open plains of the Serengeti. Driving past rural villages where the pastoralist Maasai people live we make our way to the Serengeti National Park.

Driving into the central area of Serengeti National Park, known as the Seronera section, the game viewing adventure continues. We embark on a game drive en route to our accommodations stopping for lunch along the way. This is one of the best safari destinations in the world, rivaling Kenya’s Masai Mara.

Here you will see a rich variety of wildlife roaming the African savannahs that stretch out as far as the eye can see.

We spend the whole of day four exploring the Serengeti National Park of Tanzania, pausing for a picnic lunch in the wilderness. Here we will hopefully see the Big Five of Africa (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo), as well as a dazzling assortment of other wildlife.

During the annual migration hundreds of thousands of herbivores (mostly wildebeest, gazelles, and zebras), move between Masai Mara and the Serengeti along an ancient route. The migration catches the attention of the abundant predators of Serengeti, drawn to the easy prey of the migrating herds.

On day 5 we continuing our exploration of the Northern Safari Circuit and drive to Tarangire National Park, known for its big herds of elephants. Tarangire covers some 2600km² of wilderness, characterized by undulating plains dotted with baobab and acacia trees.

Day 6 begins with a game drive in Tarangire. Frequent predator sightings include lion, leopard, and spotted hyena. Cheetahs are sometimes sighted in the southern region of the park and wild dogs have been seen on rare occasions. Elephants are common and can be sighted year-round.

The game park is home to lots of zebras and wildebeest, as well as plenty of giraffes, buffalos, waterbucks, elands, and impalas. A variety of other antelope species are also found in the park, including greater and lesser kudu, Thompson’s gazelle, hartebeest, and reedbuck.

After a rewarding game drive, we travel to Arusha where our magical 6 Day Tanzania Safari Ngorongoro Serengeti & Tarangire comes to a close in the evening.

Safari Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: Arusha – Ngorongoro Crater – Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge

Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport met and assisted by an African Spice Safaris representative. Transfer to Arusha for lunch. Afternoon drive to the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest intact caldera in the world.

Its enduring charm stems from its overwhelming beauty and the abundance of wildlife permanently resident on the crater floor. Arrive at your lodge in the evening. Rest of the day at leisure.

Meal Plan: {Lunch & Dinner}

Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater – Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge

This morning we descend 2,000 feet into the giant caldera of this extinct volcano. This magnificent natural amphitheater contains the largest concentration of animals in all of Africa. Prides of lion, black rhino, and elephant share this land with the legendary Masai tribesmen.

Because the grasses are short, the game is easily spotted and can be approached quite closely. We spend a splendid morning on the floor of the crater observing wildlife in this ageless World Heritage Site.

Day 3: Serengeti National Park – Serengeti Sopa Lodge

The Serengeti National Park is our destination today. En route, we stop at Olduvai Gorge, the “cradle of mankind,” where the Leakey family uncovered the fossil of Homo habilis, who lived 1.75 million years ago. Arriving at our lodge in time for lunch, we find ourselves deep in the heart of this famous migration corridor.

With its wide-open spaces, bright blue skies, and creature-filled landscape, over the next two days, we will discover why the fabled Serengeti typifies the dream of “Old Africa.”

A large pride of lions lazes in the long grasses, plentiful families of elephants feed on acacia bark and trumpet to each other across the plains, while giraffes, gazelles, monkeys, eland, and the whole range of African wildlife present themselves in awe-inspiring numbers. Afternoon game drives until sunset.

Day 4: Serengeti National Park – Serengeti Sopa Lodge

We awaken to the sounds of Africa and begin our day with a Bush Walk, affording an intimate and profoundly personal bond to the world of the wild. Our expert naturalist is hard at work, pointing out each individual miracle of the land that we are now a part of. An extensive afternoon game run explores the depths of the deep Serengeti.

Everywhere there are animals, monkeys and, yes, birds…but look closely and you will thrill to the huge jungle cats – lion, leopard, and cheetah—just watching the world go by. And go by it does.

Rhino, gazelle, antelope, and massive elephants by the hundreds. Animals in the trees, on the wing, camouflaged in the bush, in rivers, and in streams. The adventure of a lifetime.
