Serengeti National Park

This is a wonderful 6-day road safari to Tanzania’s northern safari circuit – walk with Bushmen Hadzabe, San tribe in Lake Eyasi, and go game viewing in the world-renowned Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and the lesser-known Tarangire National Park.

Our safari adventure begins in Arusha, where we pick you from your hotel and travel to our first game viewing destination, Tarangire National Park, known for its big herds of elephants. We explore the game park in a customized 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof for maximum visibility.

Tarangire hosts an array of wild animals, including lions and buffalos, as well as various antelopes, wildebeest, giraffes, and zebras. The national park covers some 2600km² of wilderness, characterized by undulating plains dotted with baobab and acacia trees.

On day two, our safari continues by road to the Serengeti National Park. This is one of the best safari destinations in the world, rivaling Kenya’s Masai Mara. The Serengeti is known for its impressive population of wildlife—most notably the Big 5.

We spend the whole of day three exploring the Serengeti National Park.  The park’s main attraction is the Great Migration, consisting of up to 2 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras, and 350,000 Thompson, impala, and grant’s gazelles – many consider it to be the most spectacular remaining African wildlife spectacle.

The predator viewing here is exceptional with approximately 3-4,000 lions and huge numbers of cheetah, leopard, and hyena. Other animals commonly found in the park include topi, eland, hartebeest, buffalo, elephant, caracal, serval, bat-eared fox, hyrax, genet, hares, porcupine, aardvark, giraffe, jackal, mongoose, crocodile, monitor lizard, aardwolf, many kinds of primates including baboons, vervet and colobus monkeys, and over 500 species of bird.

On Day four, we take a game drive through Serengeti Park on our way out of the national park, stopping for lunch as we go. Keep your eyes open for wildlife, especially in the early morning hours when animals and birds are more active. Next, we visit the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa.

On day five of our safari, we descend the steep crater walls to explore this wilderness teeming with wildlife. The Big 5 may be found at Ngorongoro Crater and it boasts one of the highest concentrations of lions in the world.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ngorongoro is a huge caldera 18 km in diameter with walls as high as 600 meters. The fertile crater supports a variety of wildlife, including elephants, monkeys, hyenas, jackals, and herds of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, and other antelope species, in diverse habitats.

We picnic in the crater and after an exciting day of game viewing, we leave the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation area and transfer to Lake Eyasi, located in the immediate southwest of Ngorongoro Crater in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania.

Day six begins early where we go hunting with the Hadzabe bushmen to see their astonishing ability to track and hunt small game! The Hadza are Africa’s last remaining hunter-gatherers.

After your amazing cultural experience, you travel through some amazing Tanzanian landscapes as you return to Arusha where our memorable, 6 Day Tanzania Safari Tarangire Serengeti Ngorongoro Hadzabe Bushmen ends.

Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: Arusha – Drive to Tarangire National Park

After a short tour briefing in Arusha, Tanzania’s cultural Safari gets underway. Our first stop is at one of Tanzania’s top Northern Safari Circuit game parks, the Tarangire National Park, named for the Tarangire River which flows through the park.

During the dry season, the river attracts large numbers of various animals. Considered one of the most beautiful wilderness areas in northern Tanzania, with an incredibly diverse landscape and vegetation, which sustains high grasses, dense bush, and huge numbers of baobab trees, the park is home to a variety of wildlife, but is particularly well known for big cats, including tree-climbing lions.

We enjoy some game viewing in the late afternoon, before heading to our tented camp/lodge near/inside Tarangire National Park.

Overnight at Tarangire Sopa Lodge or similar
Meal Plan: {Lunch & Dinner}

Day 2: Tarangire – Drive to the Serengeti National Park

Day two starts with breakfast at the tented lodge/camp before continuing our exploration of the Northern Safari Circuit. Our drive takes us north-west towards Serengeti National Park, via the village of Mto Wa Mbu and Karatu town. Along the way, we stop to admire the views over the Rift Valley below.

Heading further along the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater we drive down the outer slopes towards the open plains of the Serengeti. Driving past rural villages where the pastoralist Maasai people live we make our way to the Serengeti National Park.

Arriving at the entry gate near Naabi Hill you can take a short walk to the viewpoint and survey the vast grasslands from above. Driving into the central area of Serengeti Park, known as the Seronera section, the game viewing adventure continues.

We embark on a game drive en route to our camp/ lodge, stopping for lunch along the way. This is one of the best safari destinations in the world, rivaling Kenya’s Masai Mara. Here you will see a rich variety of wildlife roaming the African savannahs that stretch out as far as the eye can see.

Our overnight camp/ lodge is located in the central part of the Serengeti National Park, deep in the bush.

Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 3: Explore the Serengeti National Park

First, we have breakfast at the comfortable tented camp and then we set off for an adventure-packed day of game viewing in this top African game park. We spend the whole of day three exploring the Serengeti National Park of Tanzania, pausing for a picnic lunch in the wilderness.

Here we will hopefully see the Big Five of Africa (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo), as well as a dazzling assortment of other wildlife. During and after the rainy seasons you may be lucky enough to catch the Great Migration in full force. Usually, between October and November, and again from April to June, masses of plains game migrate across the rivers and plains of the Serengeti ecosystem.

During the annual migration hundreds of thousands of herbivores (mostly wildebeest, gazelles, and zebras), move between Masai Mara and the Serengeti along an ancient route. The migration catches the attention of the abundant predators of Serengeti, drawn to the easy prey of the migrating herds.

The timing and path of the Great Migration vary from season to season, but your safari guide uses his or her knowledge to find the optimal spots for catching the spectacle. After a remarkable day of game viewing in Serengeti National Park, we return to the tented camp/ lodge surrounded by the African wilderness.

Day 4: Serengeti – Drive to the Ngorongoro Crater

This morning we embark on an early morning game drive in Serengeti National Park, before having breakfast back at the lodge. Then we make our way to Olduvai Gorge, a deep ravine in the East African Rift Valley.

En route, we stop for a picnic lunch and enjoy game viewing. The gorge features one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites, hosting some of the earliest fossils of our humanoid ancestors. We visit the Olduvai Gorge Museum to see the excavated remains of our ancestors, with Homo erectus remains that date as far back as 1.2 million years ago.

From Olduvai, we continue to our lodge/ camp where we have dinner and spend the night.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater – Drive to Lake Eyasi

On day five, we enjoy breakfast early in the morning and dip some 600m down into the crater for an action-packed day of game viewing in this wildlife paradise. Our 4×4 game drive takes us through the diverse habitats of the crater floor, where we encounter a variety of wild animals. While in the crater we have a picnic lunch.

The Ngorongoro Crater is renowned for its high concentration of animals, with most wildlife species represented here. Due to the high density of animal populations, we are likely to see an excellent array of animals in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Ascending the crater walls after our game viewing adventure, we transfer to Lake Eyasi for our last overnight stay.

Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 6: Lake Eyasi – Drive to Arusha

Depart at the lodge/ camp at around 0600 hours and go hunting with the Hadzabe bushmen, one of the last hunter-gatherer societies in the world. After your morning hunt, you will visit the Datoga tribe, skilled craftsmen, and blacksmiths.

Later, after your amazing cultural experience, you will be transferred back to Arusha in the afternoon via curio shops where you can grab some souvenirs to take back home with you.
