Lake Nakuru National Park

Combining some of Kenya’s biggest safari experiences onto a week-long itinerary, this road tour visits four of Kenya’s most incredible game parks – Amboseli, Aberdare, Nakuru & Masai Mara.

After meeting your guide in Nairobi, you begin with a road trip to Amboseli National Park – one of the most popular game parks in Kenya. Amboseli Park covers sprawling grasslands and the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. Standing at 5896m above sea level the snow-topped mountain forms the backdrop to game viewing in Amboseli.

Amboseli National Park hosts some of Kenya’s largest elephant herds and also contains huge populations of buffalos, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, hippos and various antelope species, such as impala. Amboseli National Park is also home to lions, leopards, cheetahs and many other species of plains game.

From Amboseli, we head to the important wildlife sanctuary of Aberdare National Park in Kenya’s Central Highlands. One of the more scenic and tropical parks, it is home to the Big 5, as well as some rare forest-dwelling game like the shy bongo antelope.

Here we stay at the Tree Tops Hotel or the Ark lodge. We watch the animals that frequently visit the lively waterhole beside the lodge, from a series of viewing decks and areas at different levels. Spotting animals at the floodlit saltlick and watering hole into the night, with common visitors including elephants, buffalos, rhinos and even leopards.

Continue the safari by road to Lake Nakuru National Park, originally established as a bird sanctuary Nakuru is a Ramsar Wetland Area, known for its spectacular birdlife. When water levels are high enough massive flocks of flamingoes have been known to gather at Lake Nakuru.

Highlights in Lake Nakuru may include sightings of tree-climbing lions and both black and white rhinos, for which the reserve is better known today. Commonly sighted animals include giraffes, baboons, zebras, buffalos, antelopes and hippos, with rare finds including leopards.

Then the time has come to explore Masai Mara – one of the most famous game parks on the planet, considered by many to be the finest wildlife safari destination in all of Africa.

We embark on early morning and afternoon 4×4 adventures in this Big Five Mecca. We may come across herds of wildebeest, elephants, zebras and antelopes, along with prides of lions, coalitions of cheetahs, a crash of rhinos and lone leopards.

If the timing is right, we witness the Great Migration – the unparalleled wildlife spectacle that sees over a million wildebeest, gazelles, zebras and other herbivores stampeding across the plains and crocodile-infested rivers every year.

After 2 nights in the Mara, we journey back to the bustling city of Nairobi in the 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof. By mid-afternoon, we arrive in Nairobi where you can get dropped off at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or your hotel.

Safari Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: Nairobi – Drive to Amboseli National Park

After breakfast at your city hotel, we leave the bustling city of Nairobi and travel south to Amboseli National Park, located near the border with Tanzania. We arrive at our camp/ lodge at Amboseli Park in time for lunch.

After lunch at the camp/ lodge, we take an afternoon game drive in the beautiful Amboseli National Park. Amboseli is considered one of the top game parks in Africa to get up close to elephants in the wild, as well as offering some of the finest photographic opportunities of wildlife flanked by the scenic Mt Kilimanjaro.

Then we have dinner and overnight at a comfortable lodge in Amboseli National Park.

Overnight Accommodation: Amboseli Serena Lodge or Ol Tukai Lodge or Amboseli Sopa Lodge
Meal Plan {Lunch & Dinner}

Day 2: Explore Amboseli National Park

Today is set aside for a full day of game viewing in Amboseli game park. We explore this scenic game reserve on morning and afternoon game drives and have the option of visiting a Maasai village (optional extra).

The Game Park also contains huge populations of buffalos, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, hippos and various antelope species, such as impala. Amboseli National Park is also home to lions, leopards, cheetahs and many other species of plains game.
The park also boasts an abundance of birds, including bee-eaters, kingfishers, pelicans, African fish eagles and falcons.

Day 3: Amboseli – Drive Aberdare National Park

Depart Amboseli after breakfast. Our destination today is the Aberdare National Park. We stop for lunch at an upscale restaurant in Nairobi and travel overland through plantations of coffee and tea to The Aberdare Country Club, nestled on the slopes of Mweiga Hill.

After high tea, set off for the Ark tree lodge, located in the forest on mountain slopes of the Aberdare Mountains at 7,000 feet. This outstanding lodge offers high-altitude game viewing, including animals that are rarely encountered elsewhere: giant forest hog, bush pig, tree hyrax, large spotted genet, and the elusive bongo.

Wildlife can be observed from different levels – and from outside where you can see, hear and smell everything and inside where you can sit with a cup of tea and stay warm and cosy.

You can put in a request to be awakened during the night if your favourite animals show up. A herd of Elephants might be just feet away and if you are lucky, a Leopard or large male Lion might put in an appearance.

Overnight Accommodation: Ark Lodge, Serena Mountain Tree lodge or Treetop Tree Lodge
Meal Plan {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 4: Aberdare – Drive Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park is the destination today. The Park’s lake is well known for hundreds of thousands of Flamingos. After breakfast, we drive through the Great Rift Valley stopping at one of the highest towns in Kenya, Nyahururu at an elevation of 7700 feet.

The main attraction here is the 236-foot, Thomson Falls. Part of the Ewaso Nyiro River, these cascading falls tumble to the thick forest below. After lunch at our lodge, an afternoon ‘Spice game drive is planned where one could see both the White and Black Rhino, and Rothschild Giraffe and it is almost a guarantee to see the elusive leopard here.

Overnight Accommodation: Lake Nakuru Lodge or Sarova Lion Hill Lodge
Meal Plan {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 5: Lake Nakuru – Drive to Masai Mara Game Reserve

Enjoy an early breakfast, check out of the hotel and proceed on a ‘Spice game drive en– route to Masai Mara. A pleasant drive across the dramatic Great Rift Valley brings you to Narok Township a Masai business centre. After a short stop over continue to Masai Mara Game Reserve.

This enormous Reserve part of the vast Serengeti plains is famously known for its spectacular great wildebeest migration and is home to the Big Five – Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Cape Buffalo and Leopard.

A ‘Spice game drive will be conducted after lunch, then proceed to the Camp or lodge for an enjoyable dinner.

Overnight Accommodation: Mara Safari Club or Kichwa Tembo or Mara Serena Lodge
Meal Plan {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 6: Explore Masai Mara Game Reserve

We spend the day in the Masai Mara – one of the greatest wildernesses of the world on morning and afternoon ‘Spice’ game drives. Large mammals are varied, abundant and easy to see.

Wherever you go in the vast Masai Mara you will see plenty of wildlife, such as Masai giraffes, baboons, warthogs, bat-eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyena, topi, impala, hartebeests, wildebeest.

Elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippos are also found in great numbers. It is also common to see lions either basking after a heavy meal or surveying the plains for their next meal. Cheetahs and leopards are harder to spot but reasonably common.

The ultimate action here is, without doubt, the annual wildebeest exodus, the Great Migration, in July and August when millions of these grass eaters move north from the Serengeti in search of lusher grass before turning south again in October.

Hot-air balloon trips are an entirely outstanding way of seeing the savannah plains teeming with wildlife. These Masai Mara balloon trips can be arranged at an extra cost.
