Masai Mara National Reserve

This exciting 7-day 4×4 road safari itinerary combines adventure in four different wildlife areas of Kenya – Meru National Park, Sweetwaters/ Ol Pejeta, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara.

Travel north and begin in Meru National Park, lying at the foothills of the Nyambene Mountain Range. Meru is a remote area where Joy and George Adamson reared and maintained a friendship with the lioness Elsa, made famous by the movie Born Free.

Game to view includes lion, elephant, cheetah, leopard black rhino, zebra, gazelle, oryx and some of the rarer antelope, Lesser Kudu and duiker, also the more common dik-dik, one of Africa’s smallest antelope.

Large prides of lion can be seen and some of Kenya’s largest herds of buffalo. The rivers abound with hippos and crocodiles, and fishing for Barbus and catfish is permitted at campsites and along the Tana River.

Over 300 species of birds have been recorded, including Red-necked falcon, Heuglins courser, brown-backed woodpecker, sunbirds Peter’s Fin foot, inhabiting the Murera and Ura Rivers; Pel’s Fishing Owl, kingfishers, rollers, bee-eaters, starlings and weavers.

Then travel to Sweetwaters Game Reserve (Ol Pejeta Conservancy), a sumptuous ranch once a private domain of famed multi-millionaire, Adnan Kashoggi.

We visit the Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a charming haven established by the Jane Goodall Institute to provide sanctuary to orphaned chimps, and the specially protected and fenced refuge of black rhinos with its stunning forty specimens!

Whether it’s day or night game drives, camel trekking, lion tracking, al fresco dining, or relaxing by the pool, Sweetwaters is bound to delight.

Continue with the safari to Lake Nakuru, arguably the most renowned among Kenya’s Rift Valley lakes and one of the best-known African parks in the entire world, with its alkaline waters fringed at times by more than one million flamingos.

Nakuru is also a big success story for rhinos. There are some 60 black rhinos here, as well as 40 white, though it is the white that you see mostly as the black is much more reclusive.

End this epic safari adventure with two nights in the legendary Masai Mara, best known for its large concentrations of big cats. Even the dramatic arrival of the Annual Wildebeest Migration (June/July – October/November) merely adds to an already abundant resident wildlife.

The Masai Mara is Kenya’s most famous and finest game sanctuary. It offers wildlife in such variety and abundance that it is difficult to believe: over 450 species of animals have been recorded here. You will most likely see the Big Five – lion, rhino, buffalo, leopard, and elephant. Not to mention numerous plain animals.
