Ol Pejeta Conservancy

This is a wonderful 7-day Kenyan adventure that begins with a visit to Ol Pejeta/ Sweetwaters Conservancy where you have the unique experience of meeting our closest relatives in Kenya’s only chimpanzee rescue centre.

Then it is on to Lake Nakuru National Park for superb game viewing and bird watching and heads to the world-famous Masai Mara.

The next few days in Kenya’s premier game reserve, Masai Mara, gives you plenty of time to spot the Big Five and rich array of other wildlife roaming the open plains, as well as visit a local Maasai village to get a taste of traditional Kenyan culture.

Beginning from Nairobi you will travel by road with your African Spice Safaris driver-guide toward Ol Pejeta Conservancy, with beautiful scenery along the way. ‘Visit rescued chimpanzees at Sweetwaters game ranch. Set inside the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Sweetwaters gives rescued chimps a second chance at a normal life.

Numbering nearly 40 animals, Sweetwaters provides an environment as close to their natural habitat as possible. The chimps are split into two groups separated by the Ewaso Nyiro River.

You and your family will have the opportunity to learn all about our closest relatives, as well as other African wildlife! The Conservancy is also a dedicated black rhino breeding area making it an unforgettable stopover.

Spend 2 nights at Ol Pejeta – Home to the Big 5, on activities such as day game drives and optional activities such as night game drives, guided bush walks, lion tracking (morning only), cultural visits etc.

Next, we travel to Lake Nakuru National Park, a soda lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley that is rich in bird life and home to over 400 different species. Its claim to fame, however, is its large flocks of flamingos.

The sight of millions of flamingos making the lake appear ringed in pink is spectacular. In addition to the abundant bird life, it is also an important haven for the endangered species of Rothschild’s giraffe and both black & white rhino. You may also spot lions, waterbuck, buffalo, baboons and much more.

The grand finale is the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve. The reserve is home to the most famous East African tribe the Masai. It is also home to herds of wildebeest, zebra and other antelope as well as giraffe and buffalo. There are plenty of predators including lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas.

Safari Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: Nairobi – Ol Pejeta Conservancy

After breakfast, you are collected from the hotel in Nairobi and driven north towards Mount Kenya. The whole afternoon is spent visiting rescued chimpanzees at Olpejeta/ Sweetwaters Game Sanctuary.

Set inside the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Sweetwaters gives rescued chimps a second chance at a normal life. Sweetwaters is Kenya’s only sanctuary for the rehabilitation of chimpanzees.

Day 2: Explore Ol Pejeta Conservancy/ Sweetwaters Game Sanctuary

Today we get a closer look at the conservancy during two extensive game runs. On the plains are enormous herds of grazing animals plus predators—cheetah and black-maned lion— hiding amidst acacia trees.

The combination of amazing wildlife and stunning views across the open plains of Ol Pejeta guarantees an unforgettable safari experience. Ol Pejeta Conservancy boasts an astounding variety of animals including rare endangered black rhino, Somali Ostrich, Grevy Zebra, Beisa Oryx and Jackson’s Hartebeest.

Day 3: Ol Pejeta/ Sweetwaters  – Drive to Lake Nakuru National Park

This morning, we leave Sweetwaters after breakfast and head for Lake Nakuru National Park. We arrive at a camp/ lodge in good time for lunch and after a refreshing stop, head out for an afternoon game drive.

Lake Nakuru, a soda lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley is rich in bird life and home to over 400 different species. Its claim to fame, however, is its large flocks of flamingos.

The sight of millions of flamingoes making the lake appear ringed in pink is spectacular. In addition to the abundant bird life, it is also an important haven for the endangered species of Rothschild’s giraffe and both black and white rhino.

The game in Nakuru is plentiful. On a single drive, you are likely to see impala, defassa waterbuck, white rhino and big herds of buffalo on the open grasslands. A glimpse of a twitching ear revealed a pride of lions lying in the shade of a small tree.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru  – Drive to Masai Mara Game Reserve

Enjoy an early breakfast, check out of the hotel and proceed on a game drive en– route to Maasai Mara. A pleasant drive across the dramatic Great Rift Valley brings you to Narok Township a Maasai business centre. After a short stop over continue to Masai Mara Game Reserve.

This enormous Reserve actually part of the vast Serengeti plains is famously known for its spectacular great wildebeest migration and is home to the Big Five -Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Cape Buffalo and Leopard.

A ‘Spice game drive will be conducted after lunch, then proceed to the camp or lodge for an enjoyable dinner.

Day 5 & 6 : Explore Maasai Mara Game Reserve

We rise with the sun in the great African wilderness of Masai Mara. We set off on an early morning game drive before returning to camp for breakfast. The cool morning is perfect for seeing the wild game at their most active before the heat of the day sets in.

We return to the base camp where you can relax and soak up the African ambience at your leisure. After lunch, we embark on a two-hour nature walk with a local Maasai guide. The Maasai have lived on these plains for centuries and your guide will share his experience and expertise with you.

Learn about the fauna and flora of the region and the way that the Maasai people use the plants.  Your guide will teach you the hidden secrets of the African savannah, like how to find medicine in the bush and how to track wildlife and birds.

The famous Masai Mara Game Reserve is Kenya’s most popular and most visited game sanctuary. It was used as the location of the well-known film ‘Out of Africa’ because of its spectacular scenery and outstanding natural beauty. Mara is home to a huge variety of plains wildlife from wildebeest and zebra to lions, cheetahs and hyenas.

From July to August the park hosts one of nature’s truly great events. Millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle migrate from the Serengeti, across the Tanzania border and the Mara River to reach the sweet grass plains of the Maasai Mara National Park.

It is awash with high drama. Crocodiles lurk in the river and lions and other predators lie in ambush in the long grass. In addition to the unforgettable game experience, about 452 species of birds have been recorded in the park.

Day 7: Masai Mara Game Reserve – Drive to Nairobi

An early morning ‘Spice’ game drive is planned before returning to your camp/lodge for a proper sit-down English breakfast. After breakfast, we drive to Nairobi and check in to our hotel for day room use where the rest of the day is at leisure for last-minute shopping and sightseeing.

In the evening, you will be escorted to the Airport for flight check-in and board the plane that takes you home with a smile and a lifetime of memories.
