8 Days Kenya Fly-in Safari Intrepids Camps Samburu Mara

This Seven-night fly-in safari combines Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya with the outstanding Maasai Mara National Reserve in the southwest. Both camps – Samburu Intrepids Camp & Masai Mara Intrepids Camp are located in prime wildlife viewing areas.

Beginning in Nairobi, what better way to introduce yourself to a safari than by spending the first night at the 5-star Emara Ole Sereni hotel – a premium wildlife resort strategically located between the international airport and the city centre, this is the only hotel bordering the wilds of the Nairobi National Park. Lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalo and giraffes are all regularly spotted in the park.

The following morning, we fly north to the Samburu National Reserve, your chance to see the diverse wildlife of Kenya’s drier savannahs, including the Samburu Five – five rare and endemic animals to the Samburu ecosystem. They are the Gerenuk, the Reticulated giraffe, the Somali ostrich, the Grevy’s zebra, and the Beisa oryx.

Your accommodation – Samburu Intrepids Camp – is situated on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River in the arid heart of Samburu National Reserve. Samburu Intrepids looks out over riverbanks where herds of elephant, buffalo and zebra come daily to drink – together with the rarer ‘northern species’ of reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx and long-necked gerenuk antelope.

As well as game drives to view the surrounding wilderness, the camp also offers escorted nature walks, memorable bush breakfasts and starlit dinners, sundowners, tours of Samburu villages and lectures and slide shows on culture and wildlife.

The second chapter to this wildlife-intensive safari is the Masai Mara, of course, most famous for the annual and seasonal Wildebeest Migration.  Your accommodation – Mara Intrepids Camp – is well positioned for dramatic river crossings when the wildebeest herds arrive from the neighbouring Serengeti and is an amazing game-viewing destination at any time of year.

Outside of the migration, period, the camp still offers some of the world’s finest game viewing, with large local populations of plains game including, elephant, rhino, buffalo, and all the Big Cats. Game drives are always a delight here as they don’t get much better than in this central triangle of the Maasai Mara.

Mara Intrepids Camp offers nature walks and cultural visits to local Maasai villages. African Spice Safaris can also arrange hot air balloon safaris, leaving before dawn.

Well-paced with plenty of time at each major safari destination and combines easily with a beach holiday on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast too.

Safari Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: Nairobi Arrival – Transfer to Emara Hotel Ole Sereni

Your safari begins at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport where you are met and transferred a short distance to EMARA Ole Sereni. EMARA has the perfect location to begin your safari holiday adventure: lying on the edge of the Nairobi National Park, it not only has views of the wildlife in the park but you also have time for an afternoon game drive to see the animals and a little closer up.

There are buffalo, giraffes and zebra in the park as well as rhinos and lions, and an amazing wealth of birdlife.

Overnight Accommodation: EMARA Ole Sereni
Meal Plan: {Lunch & Dinner}

Day 2, 3 & 4: Nairobi – Fly to Samburu National Reserve

After breakfast, you transfer to Wilson Airport for a domestic scheduled flight to Samburu National Reserve. Lying in Kenya’s more arid northern region, Samburu and two other adjoining game reserves – Buffalo Springs and Shaba are the least visited game reserves in Kenya. Being uncrowded makes them among the most pleasant parks to visit.

Samburu is a land of elephants and lions but also the long-necked gerenuk and rapier-horned besia oryx. Your home for three nights is Samburu Intrepids Camp, a luxurious tented camp that offers game drives as well as walks and cultural exchanges with the local Samburu community.

There is also Internet access, a swimming pool and an activity club for the children as well as a wellness therapist, fine dining and natural history talks each night for the parents and adults in the group.

Overnight Accommodation: Samburu Intrepids Camp
Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 5, 6 & 7: Samburu – Fly toMasai Mara Game Reserve

Today a scheduled domestic flight takes you south and to the great rolling plains of the Masai Mara. Your accommodation – Mara Intrepids Camp – has a riverside setting in a game-rich region close to the famous Mara River.

Mara Intrepids is located in a special Leopard spotting zone of the Maasai Mara. This camp is just a short drive from the Mara River, where over a million wildebeest and zebra make their perilous migration crossing every year.

Outside of the migration, period, the camp still offers some of the world’s finest game viewing, with large local populations of plains game including, elephant, rhino, buffalo, and all the Big Cats.

Game drives are always a delight here as they don’t get much better than in this central triangle of the Maasai Mara. Lion, cheetah, buffalo, spotted hyena, black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox and various antelope are conspicuous in the plains that divide the rivers, whose confluence lies close to the main crossing point used by tens of thousands of wildebeest during the annual migration.

The lodge offers nature walks and cultural visits to local Maasai villages. African Spice Safaris can also arrange hot air balloon safaris, leaving before dawn.

Overnight Accommodation: Masai Mara Intrepids Camp
Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 8: Masai Mara  – Fly to Nairobi Wilson

After breakfast at Mara Intrepids camp, you are transferred back to the airstrip for a flight back to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport. There is a short drive to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport where this safari then ends and you connect with your onward travel arrangements.
