Tsavo West National Park

Four incredible Kenya destinations await you on this 9-day road safari: Tsavo West National Park, Aberdare National Park, Samburu National Reserve, Lake Nakuru National Park and the Masai Mara National Reserve.

This 9-day road Safari begins and ends in Nairobi with a pick up from a hotel or straight from the airport. You will be in the company of our friendly, professional driver-guide throughout the safari in a 4×4 safari vehicle/ mini-van with a pop-up roof.

The tour first visits Tsavo West National Park located in the Coast Province of Kenya. This Kenyan park is the largest National Park and supports all the members of the ‘Big Five’ as well as other animals like Cheetah, Giraffe, Hippo, Baboon, Waterbuck, Coke’s Hartebeest, Gerenuk, Gazelle, Zebra, Crocodile and Oryx.

From Tsavo West, the tour continues to the Aberdare Mountain Range located in Kenya’s Central Highlands. After a stop for lunch at an upscale restaurant in Nairobi, the tour takes you to Aberdare National Park, a scenic and tropical park home to the Big 5, as well as some rare forest-dwelling game like the shy Bongo Antelope, Colobus Monkey, Golden Cat, Giant Forest Hog and Leopard.

Proceed by road to the next safari destination – Samburu National Reserve set alongside the Ewaso Nyiro River, Kenya’s biggest northern river, Samburu has the lion’s share of wildlife.

Besides big cats and African Wild Dogs, you’re likely to see some of the rare northern species such as Grevy’s Zebra, the Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, the long-necked Gerenuk, Guenther’s Dik-dik and the Beisa Oryx, known as the Samburu Special Six.

Travel to Lake Nakuru National Park which hosts over 400 different bird species, including the Great White Pelican, Grey-crested Helmet-shrike, African Spoonbill, Yellow-billed Stork and Long-crested Eagle. Lake Nakuru is sometimes visited by flocks of migratory pink flamingos – an amazing sight when the birds gather.

Lake Nakuru National Park is an important wildlife sanctuary for some of Africa’s endangered species, especially black and white Rhinos, and Rothschild Giraffes. The game reserve is also home to Lions, Waterbuck, Buffalo and Baboons, which we keep an eye out for on our game drive.

Then it’s back on the road, as we make our way to our next game viewing destination in Kenya, the world-famous Masai Mara Game Reserve. Explore the reserve on morning and afternoon game drives in search of Africa’s Big Five and the plethora of other wildlife inhabiting this vast Kenyan game reserve.

The Mara is home to an abundance of wildlife such as Cheetah, Masai Giraffe, Baboon, Warthog, bat eared Fox, Grey Jackal, spotted Hyena, Topis, Impala, Hartebeest, Wildebeest, Zebras and Hippos are also found in great numbers.

The ultimate action here is without a doubt the annual wildebeest exodus, the Great Migration, in July and August when millions of these grazers move north from the Serengeti in search of lusher grass before turning south again in October.

Balloon trips are an entirely outstanding way of seeing the savannah plains teeming with wildlife. These Masai Mara balloon trips can be arranged at extra cost.

After high tea, set off for the Ark tree lodge or at the Treetops lodge, located in the forest on mountain slopes of the Aberdare Mountains at 7,000 feet. This outstanding lodge offers high altitude game viewing, including animals that are rarely encountered elsewhere: giant forest Hog, Bush Pig, Tree Hyrax, large spotted Genet, and the elusive Bongo.

Wildlife can be observed from different levels – and from outside where you can see, hear and smell everything and inside where you can sit with a cup of tea and stay warm and cozy.

You can put in a request to be awakened during the night if your favorite animals show up. A herd of Elephants might be just feet away and if you are lucky, a Leopard or large male Lion might put in an appearance.

This vast landscape is the quintessential African bush scene, an open wilderness of undulating grasslands dotted with acacia trees.

The Masai Mara National Reserve is world-famous for the legendary Great Migration, a wildlife spectacle of epic proportions, where a million wildebeest, Gazelles (Thomson’s and Grant’s) and Zebras migrate along an age-old route between Mara and Serengeti in Tanzania.

The mass movement of herbivores draws an abundance of predators in search of an easy kill. The Masai Mara is however an exceptional Big Five game viewing destination year round, and is also the home region of the red-robed Maasai people.

Optional Hot Air Balloon rides and a trip to Lake Victoria for fishing are available at an additional cost while in the Mara.
