Kampala Day Trips - Namugongo Martyrs Shrines Tour

Kampala Day Trips Namugongo Martyrs Shrines Tour takes you 20 kilometers east of Kampala city to Namugongo shrine and museum – the final execution sites of Uganda martyrs. This is where more than 20 Catholic and Anglican Martyrs were burnt alive on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga in June 1886.

The story of “Uganda martyrs” killed in 1886 is a story of faith, courage, and Cruelty. It’s Uganda and perhaps East Africa’s most important place of Christian pilgrimage. Christians from eastern and central Africa and indeed the world over flock to Namugongo to pay their respects and renew their faith by paying pilgrimage to the martyrs on June 3rd, every year.

The shrine is the place where a total of 32 young Ugandan Christian converts were martyred in denial to condemn the new religion by then (Christianity) which was out spreading at a fast rate in Uganda as the pearl of Africa. This annoyed the Kabaka of Buganda by then King (Kabaka Mwanga II,) and he decided to order his loyalties to execute or murder the 32 young men who refused to denounce their religion.

Kampala Day Trips Namugongo Martyrs Shrines Tour Itinerary

0900 Hours:  After breakfast at your hotel in Kampala, you will be picked up and taken to Namugongo martyr’s shrine. You will be conducted around the place, one for the Protestants and the other for the Catholics.

Each denomination maintains a church there and service may be conducted while there, or after the service, you will be taken around and given the background of the place and its historical and religious importance to the country. You will then be brought back to your hotel.

The Shrine is famous for its splendid as well as unique interior and exterior shape which is eye-catching to various travelers especially those that have spared time to visit the site. The construction process of the famous Uganda Martyrs’ Shrine was started in the year 1967 and was completed in the year 1975.

The shrine was officially opened by the special Papal envoy, His Eminence Sergio Cardinal Pignedoli on the date of 3rd June 1975. Pope John Paul II’s six days safari tour to Uganda’s Namugongo on the month of February 7, 1993, helped to raise the status of the Shrine to the level of a minor Basilica.

The big spectacular Shrine covering Namugongo today stands perfectly on the point where the ancient small parish church used to be. It is the very place where Charles Lwanga one of the Martyrs was burnt alive.

The unique lake found in the garden Centre of Namugongo is another unique feature that visitors should not miss exploring. The Lake is the depiction in memory of the work done by St. Charles Lwanga while still on good terms with King Mwanga’s palace.

Various pilgrims to Uganda’s Namugongo have often fetched water from this historic lake and some of them have come to testify that the water in the lake heals different diseases.

Days before the long-waited 3rd of June, you find people of all ages, matching from all directions of Uganda heading to the shrine. The long-awaited day is filled with several events like prayers, baptisms, plays, and lots of eats and drinks.
