Mida Creek Reserve Malindi Day Tour - Mangroves Boardwalk & Canoe Ride

Mida Creek Reserve Malindi Day Tour spend a few hours exploring Mida Creek and enjoy a relaxed guided tour and canoe ride through the mangrove swamps where you can view a magnificent array of birds and animals. The lagoon of Mida Creek is located about 15 km from Watamu and 30 km from Malindi. Mida is bordered by the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, the largest East African forest by the coast, and a beautiful rich mangrove coast. The people here are the Giriama tribe.

Mida Creek is an excellent bird-watching area. Traditional dugout canoes, Arabic shows, and Western motorboats are all used for bird viewing, water skiing, and relaxing boat cruises on Mida Creek. Mida Creek, East Africa’s largest mangrove creek is one of the most productive mangrove ecosystems on earth. The mangrove roots provide a rich source of nutrients for the fish, crabs, shrimp, and oysters found in this area. These fish and crustaceans then provide food for Mida’s famous bird population and the local villages, completing the food chain.

It is a key stop-over and non-breeding site for migrating birds from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East to eastern and southern Africa and therefore provides a wonderful place for bird spotting. Plan your Mida Creek visit and explore what else you can see and do in Watamu using our Watamu online trip itinerary planner.

1000 Hours: Our Mida Creek excursion departs from the hotel in Malindi and we drive to the beach of Watamu Marine Park. The drive takes about 45 minutes.  Mida Creek Reserve is about 30 kms from Malindi.

1100 Hours: Upon arrival at Mida Creek Reserve, the local guides meet you at the entrance and assist you to board. You will take a tour of the boardwalk. The tour takes you along the 260-meter suspended boardwalk that twists and winds its way through the mangrove, swaying gently as you walk along it.

During the walk your guide will teach you about the different plants in the mangroves and the variety of birds and wildlife found in the area, you may also have the opportunity to see a colony of Greater Flamingos and a large number of Crab Plovers.

At the end of the boardwalk, there is a rustic bird hide from which you can see a number of water birds from Greenshanks to Whimbrels, Sacred Ibises, and Sandpipers.

After you have spent some time bird-watching your guide will escort you out of the hide and across the mud flats, past the scuttling crabs, to the canoes. We sail for about 5 minutes to the southern shore of Mida Creek where the restaurant “Rock and Sea” is located.
