Marangu Route Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro

This 3-day short Kilimanjaro Hike follows the Marangu Route, the easiest and shortest route to the summit of Kilimanjaro however, on this particular trip our aim is NOT to reach the summit. Marangu Route is sometimes called the “Coca-Cola” and is the oldest and most popular route up Mount Kilimanjaro.

On this trip, you will hike on the Marangu Route for two nights on the mountain before returning to Moshi. You will trek up and spend the first night at a hut called Mandara Hut and the following day continue hiking further up to the second hut called Horombo Hut for the night. The following day you will return to Mandara hut for lunch and then hike back.

The Marangu route is unique in offering the luxury of sleeping huts at all of the camp stops along the way. The Mandara huts have 60 beds and the Horombo Hut sleeps, 120 people. The huts are equipped with comfortable bunk beds each with a sponge mattress and pillow. The huts on the Marangu trail are communal and are fitted with solar-powered lights.

The bathrooms of the huts lower down on the slopes feature running water. There are various beverages on sale along the Marangu Route to quench the thirst of climbing hikers. Bottled water, soft drinks, and even beer are usually available at the huts.

Meals are taken in shared dining huts where several climbing groups from various countries across the globe get to meet up. These social mealtimes on the Marangu route are fun and lively occasions. This Kilimanjaro Hike begins with a transfer to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1840m). Upon arrival at the Kilimanjaro National Park, we complete the necessary paperwork before starting our hike up Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The trek soon takes us into the dense rainforest where we are surrounded by ancient trees draped with moss, giant ferns, lichen, and other indigenous vegetation. Walking through the rainforest we keep a lookout for black and white colobus monkeys, as well as other wild animals.

After a 4-hour walk, we reach our first overnight stop, the Mandara Hut (2670m). Here we rest before visiting Maundi Crater with our mountain guide. From the crater, we enjoy wonderful views of the Kenyan interior, before returning to Mandara Hut for dinner and our overnight stay.

Day 2 begins with an early breakfast before continuing our Marangu hike up Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. We soon reach the tree line passing into the heath and moor vegetation zone. We hike for about 4 – 6 hours to reach the Horombo Hut, at an altitude of 3700m.

We will have dinner and stay overnight at Horombo Hut, admiring the spectacular views over Mawenzi, Kibo, and the vast plains of the Masai steppe.

On Day 3, we have breakfast and get magnificent views of the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in the morning sunrise, we will start to retrace our steps, heading back down to Mandara Huts for lunch. Continue descending through a lush forest path to the National Park gate at Marangu.

At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). A vehicle will meet you at Marangu village to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi/ Arusha or to Kilimanjaro Airport.

This brings your memorable 3 days Kilimanjaro Hike via Marangu Route to a close. The hiking distance we cover is about 20 km/ 13 miles and will take about 4-5 hours.
