This affordable 3-day Tanzania road safari takes you to two of the best game parks on Tanzania’s famous Northern Safari Circuit – Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater.
First, we explore the diverse Tarangire National Park, home to one of Tanzania’s largest elephant populations and considered one of the most beautiful game reserves in Tanzania. Next, we explore the Ngorongoro Crater, justly famous as being home to perhaps the most concentrated density of wildlife in Africa and offers some of the easiest Big 5 game viewing available.
Beginning and ending in Arusha, the tour travels by road to Tarangire National Park. Located slightly off the main safari route, Tarangire National Park is located 118 km/ 75 miles southwest of Arusha. Tarangire National Park derives its name from the Tarangire River which crosses at its centre.
We explore the game park in a customized 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof for maximum visibility. We stop in the bush for a picnic lunch on our game drive. Tarangire hosts an array of wild animals, including lions and buffalos, as well as various antelopes, wildebeest, giraffes, and zebras.
Tarangire is also home to various big cats including lions, leopards, and cheetahs, as well as tree climbing pythons. Other wildlife inhabiting the game park includes giraffes, buffalos, zebras, and various antelope species such as gazelles.
The national park covers some 2600km² of wilderness, characterized by undulating plains dotted with baobab and acacia trees. After our wildlife adventure in Tarangire Park, we head to our first overnight stay at a tented camp/ lodge in the park.

On day two we move on from Tarangire National Park and travel through Mto Wa Mbu village and continue up into the higher lands enjoying spectacular views over the Masai Plains and Lake Manyara, pausing to take photos of the breathtaking views. We continue to our next Tanzania safari destination, the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater.
We overnight at a safari camp/ lodge perched on the crater’s edge, offering sweeping views over the crater and surrounding landscapes. Accommodation options include Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge, Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, and Neptune Ngorongoro Luxury Lodge.
On Day three, we descend the steep crater walls to explore this diverse wilderness area teeming with Africa’s wildlife. The Ngorongoro Crater hosts the Big Five of Africa, boasting one of the highest concentrations of lions in the world.
Almost all of the wild animal species found on the savannahs of East Africa inhabit this compact crater. Ngorongoro offers first-class game viewing and is considered one of the best places to capture the endangered black rhino on film.
We stop for a picnic lunch in the crater and after our thrilling wildlife experience, we leave the crater and return to Arusha where this 3 day Tanzania road safari begun.

Day 1: Arusha Town – Drive to Tarangire National Park
0730 Hours: Depart Arusha or Moshi by road to Tarangire National Park. The Distance from Arusha is 130 Kilometers while from Moshi is 210 Kilometers.
1000 Hours: Arrive at the park and proceed on a game drive. Wildlife to be seen include Elephants, famous tree-climbing pythons, leopards, Zebra, Giraffe, Dik Dik and Ostrich and different species of birds can be seen.
1300 Hours: We arrive at our accommodations in time of lunch. After lunch relax before the afternoon game drive.
1530 Hours: Depart for the afternoon game drive.
With a permanent water source, the park is virtually guaranteed enormous herds and excellent game viewing including cheetah, lion (some tree-climbing!), leopard and hyena and a herd of 3,500 elephants.
The park is also host to a number of rare species including eland, Oryx, kudu and gerenuk. Tarangire is popular as a birding destination.
There are over 550 bird species found here which include the Kori bustard, the heaviest flying bird in the world, ostriches etc.
1830 Hours: We return back to our accommodations for the night.

Day 2: Tarangire National Park – Drive to The Ngorongoro Crater
0800 Hours: After breakfast depart in your 4×4 safari vehicle towards the awe-inspiring Ngorongoro Crater. You’ll pass through maize, coffee and banana plantations and a scenic escarpment on the edge of the Rift Valley with stunning views over the distant Lake Manyara.
After a short stop at Mto wa Mbu or Karatu village, you’ll continue on your way to Ngorongoro Crater to arrive in time for lunch at your lodge/camp.
1300 Hours: Check-in and lunch follows.
1400 Hours: After lunch, the afternoon is at leisure. You can choose to enjoy one of the many activities available. Karatu Town tour – this tour will include a visit to the local market and a nearby school.
Cultural experiences – this will give an opportunity to understand the way of life as experienced by the local tribes for example the Iraqw as well as the neighbouring tribes like the Maasai and the Bushmen.
Nature walks hiking and jogging – this activity could be done in the surrounding forest area as well as in the nearby villages and into the town of Karatu.

Day 3: Full Day in The Ngorongoro Crater – Drive to Arusha/ Moshi
0600 Hours: Today you will head out into the early morning mist and make the 2000-foot descent into the crater. Explore the distinct areas of forest, lakes and open grassland on a half-day game drive.
Animals we are likely to see include cheetah, hyenas and the Big Five – Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo.
0900 Hours: Picnic Breakfast at the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater.
Ngorongoro Crater is inhabited by about 30,000 animals, of which half are zebra and wildebeest. The crater also has hyenas, lions, leopards, cheetahs, jackals, hippo, bull elephants, buffalo, Grant’s and Thompson’s gazelles.
The salt-whitened shores of Lake Magadi are turned a pastel pink from thousands of flamingoes sifting algae and shrimps from this soda lake. The lake also attracts a myriad of other water birds including avocets, plovers and black-winged stilts etc
1300 Hours: We enjoy our packed lunch at the floor of the crater and continue with our game drive.
1500 Hours: We drive to ascend to the rim of the crater and drive to Arusha/ Moshi.
