Mombasa Day Tour Arabuko Sokoke Forest Walk Mida Creek Itinerary

0500 Hours: After an early breakfast at your hotel/ residence you will be picked up and depart by road to Arabuko Sokoke Forest. Arabuko Sokoke is located 110 km north of Mombasa along the coastal highway heading to Malindi.

The Visitor Centre at the Forest Station is open from 0600 Hours to 1700 Hours daily. The walking tour in the forest lasts anything from 1 to 4 hours. The best times to discover Arabuko-Sokoke forests are the early morning hours around dawn or the early evening hours around dusk when wildlife and birds of the forest are most active. These times are also more comfortable for you because you avoid the hot part of the day.

0630 Hours: Upon arrival at the Forest Visitors Centre, you proceed on a guided walking tour into the forest. With a size of 420 square kilometers, Arabuko Sokoke Forest is the largest remaining section of dry coastal forest found in Eastern and Southern Africa.

It is a unique habitat characterized by an enormous array of flora and fauna. It is a key site for the global survival of six bird species and three mammal species including the elephant shrew. If you are generally interested in nature or like hiking, biking, and camping, Arabuko-Sokoke is a good destination for you.

On the 4 km long Nature Trail which is close to the Forest Visitor Centre, you can learn more about the unique features of Arabuko-Sokoke. The Nyari Cliff is the perfect place to go if you decide to go on a longer tour in Arabuko-Sokoke Forest.

Nyari Cliff is set on one of the few cliffs in the forest and commands stunning views over the forest canopy, Mida Creek, and the Indian Ocean. Primate species include yellow baboon, sykes’ monkey, and vervet, and you may even sight aardvark, bushbaby, red-bellied coast and red-bellied sun squirrel, woodland buffalo, and forest elephant.

1000 Hours: Continue to the neighboring Mida Creek Lagoon Watamu. The tour takes you along the 260-meter suspended boardwalk that twists and winds its way through the mangrove, swaying gently as you walk along it.

During the walk your guide will teach you about the different plants in the mangroves and the variety of birds and wildlife found in the area, you may also have the opportunity to see a colony of Greater Flamingos and a large number of Crab Plovers. At the end of the boardwalk, there is a rustic bird hide from which you can see several water birds from Greenshanks to Whimbrels, Sacred Ibises, and Sandpipers.

After you have spent some time bird-watching your guide will escort you out of the hide and across the mud flats, past the scuttling crabs, to the canoes. Your guide may also show you the rock pools where brightly colored Sea Urchins, Sea Cucumbers, and Cow Fish may be seen.

The canoe ride ventures silently into the mangrove forest taking you past a variety of waders and water birds as you head deeper and deeper into the forest. This is a wonderful way to take in the beauty of your surroundings as you skim effortlessly across the water.

1300 Hours: We proceed for lunch in Malindi. (Optional at Extra Cost; proceed to Gede ruins and visit Vasco da Gamma pillar before you depart for Mombasa).
