Mombasa Tour Haller Park - Ngomongo Village Nguuni Park

Mombasa Tour Haller Park Ngomongo Village Nguuni Park; Explore Mombasa wildlife attractions in a day by visiting Haller Park (formerly Bamburi Nature Trail) and Nguuni Nature Sanctuary during this excursion. Your tour begins with a visit to Haller Park (Bamburi Nature Trail) located 12 km (7.5 miles) north of Mombasa along the Mombasa/ Malindi highway. Haller Park is the largest animal sanctuary in Mombasa boasting a variety of animals, reptiles, insects, and botanical gardens.

Walking along the trail is the ideal way to look at the various animals, and on many occasions holding or feeding a reptile such as a snake is allowed under the close supervision of a guide. Educational videos are also shown, with emphasis on the history and continuous improvement of the trail. It was previously a barren piece of land that had been stripped of its resources through limestone mining.

Later it was redeveloped through reforestation and conservation efforts and is now a habitat for a large number of flora and fauna species. Next, we visit the Ngomongo Villages – African Tribal homesteads displaying the ways of life of the ten most colorful and diverse rural peoples of Kenya. You will see their huts, tools, and gardens and learn more about their traditions and way of life.

After lunch, we proceeded to Nguuni Nature Sanctuary located only 4 km from the cement factory, not far from Haller Park. It is a park where you can relax and enjoy animals. You have the opportunity to make a little safari through the park by car or to go on a birdwalk.

Get a lifetime chance to get up close with giraffes, elands, oryx, waterbucks, ostriches, and many species of birds. The park has several picnic areas and there is a possibility to enjoy a barbecue at sundown.

Mombasa Tour Haller Park Ngomongo Village Nguuni Park Itinerary

0900 Hours: We pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to Haller Park (formerly Bamburi Nature Trail). The park is located south of the Bamburi cement plant along the Mombasa/ Malindi highway.

The drive from Mombasa city centre takes an easy 30 minutes depending on the traffic. The park was once a product of the company’s efforts, since 1971, to convert the barren landscape of disused limestone quarries into a vibrant and diverse ecosystem of forest, grasslands, and ponds.

Currently, Haller Park plays host to a variety of wildlife including hippos, giraffes, buffalo, and antelopes as well as smaller mammals and birds.

The Park consists of a Game Sanctuary, a Reptile Park, a small demonstration Fish Farm area, a Palm Garden, Crocodile pens, and a giraffe viewing platform, offering a variety of attractions at various points to educate and entertain the over 160,000 visitors who visit the park every year.

The diversity of vegetation is considerable, from mangrove palms and majestic indigenous shade trees to coastal forests where several of these plants are rare and endangered; a haven for botanists.

Yet each plant plays an important role in the overall harmony of the ecosystem. The park also provides a home to various animal species from the cheeky Vervet monkeys to the graceful giraffe.

There are many birds like weavers, Kingfisher, Storks, Herons, Egrets, Owls, Eagles, Kites, Cranes, Ibis, Sandpipers the list is endless. Haller Park a must-visit for all lovers of birds.

1100 Hours: Proceed to Ngomomgo villages (Homesteads). This is a unique presentation of the ways of life of the 10 most colorful and diverse rural peoples of Kenya.

The tribes featured include Akamba, El Molo, Luo, Rendile, Mijikenda, Kalenjin, Turkana, Kikuyu, Maasai, Pokot, etc.

A visitor completing this interesting one-and-a-half-kilometer walk through the village gets the impression of having walked through the entire rural Kenya in two hours.

The village has huts, farms, plants, and animals associated with some rural people like cattle for the Masai and crocodiles for the crocodile hunting El- molo people etc.

Among the things they display are huts, utensils, gardens, and the crops they grow in their rural areas.

1300 Hours: We proceed for lunch at a nearby restaurant.

1430 Hours: After lunch, we visit the Nguuni Nature Sanctuary situated along the Nguu Tatu Hills (3 hills) – an amazing sanctuary in completely natural surroundings, 4 km from the Bamburi Cement Factory.
