Mount Kenya Climbing Chogoria Route 2 Days 1 Night Trek; Chogoria Route is by far the most spectacular and beautiful route on Mount Kenya.
Out of the three popular routes for climbing Mount Kenya, the Chogoria Route is without question the most scenic and rewarding for hikers interested in sightseeing as well as summiting.
The Chogoria route is on the east side of the mountain while Naro Moru and Sirimon routes are on the west and north sides of the mountain respectively.
The day starts by driving up to the park entrance and hiking to Mugi Hill, Lake Ellis and the Gates (Road Head) to experience the magnificent sceneries on the Eastern side of the mountain.
Spend a night at Mt Kenya Meru Bandas. Different excursion can be made to different places from this side.
|
Mount Kenya Climbing Chogoria Route 2 Days 1 Night Trek Itinerary |
Day 1: Nairobi – Drive to Chogoria Town – Hike to Mount Meru Bandas
0800 Hours: Pick up from your hotel in Nairobi after breakfast and drive north to Chogoria town for lunch.
1200 Hours: Lunch in Chogoria Town. After lunch we will then drive up through the forest in 4×4's.
It is usually possible to drive all the way to our camp, but we will decide where to be dropped off so that we get the acclimatizing benefits of a walk.
In addition we also get the opportunity to soak up the sights and sounds of the forest and to get 'in-tune' with our surroundings.
We will probably walk around 5-10 kilometers before we arrive at the Meru Bandas where we spend the night.
This is a good spot to see wildlife in the evening including monkeys, buffalo and even elephant.
Dinner and overnight at Mount Meru Bandas
Accommodation Options:
Budget Accommodation: Mount Meru Bandas
Meal Plan: {Lunch & Dinner}
Day 2: Mount Meru Bandas – Hike up 2 Hours – Drive to Chogoria Town – Nairobi
0800 Hours: After breakfast hike 7 kilometers further up to the Road head at 3300 meters. Since it only takes 2 hours to get here, that leaves you with plenty of time to explore the surroundings.
One of the attractions here is the Nithi waterfalls, approximately 100 feet high, accessible by crossing the river and following the trail to the left for about 300 meters.
Other attractions are Lake Ellis at 3500 meters and about 3 kilometers to the right of the road head, and Mugi Hill next to the Lake.
If you climb to the top of Mugi Hill, you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the neighboring flat-topped Giant’s Billiard table.
From this point, you’ll retrace your steps. We will walk back along the vehicle track to the Meru Bandas and sign out of the National Park.
We will then load up our 4×4 for the drive back down through the forest to Chogoria and on to Nairobi.

2 Days Climbing Mt Kenya Naro Moru Route Point Lenana: This trip offers a great opportunity to visitors with limited time to reach the third highest Peak of Mount Kenya (Point Lenana, 4985 meters).
