2 Days 1 Night Tsavo West National Park Luxury Flying Safari is a short overnight safari holiday to Tsavo West National Park from Nairobi by air. The flying time is about an hour from Wilson Airport Nairobi.

Depending on the choice of the lodge, our flying package flights will land close your accommodations in Tsavo West.

You can land at Kilaguni airstrip or at Finch Hattons airstrip and at Ol Donyo Lodge airstrip in the Chyulu Hills.

Our overnight safari offers you activities such as a visit to the biggest attraction in in Tsavo West National Park called the Tsavo West Mzima Springs – enjoy watching hippos, crocodiles and fish in the water, monkeys etc.

There are many Kenyan animals in the park, including giraffes, cheetahs, wild dogs, hartebeest, red-skinned elephants, as well as to members of the rest of the "Big 5" African animals (buffalo, African lions, leopards and rhinos).

Another attraction in Tsavo West include a visit to Lake Jipe which attracts a lot of wildlife and is a good place for bird watching. Take a boat excursion on the lake, or explore the swamps at each end.

Bird watching is very popular and includes migratory birds such as African skimmers, red and yellow bishops, goshawks, buffalo weavers and palm nut vultures, to name a few.

Lake Jipe and the acacia woodlands also attract many birds including ostriches, kestrels, buzzards, starlings, weavers, kingfishers, hornbills, secretary birds and herons.

Pate Island 1 Day Trip Lamu Island excursions: This is a sailing day trip with a wooden dhow to Pate Island to explore Faza Town, Pate Town, Siyu Fort and the archeological site of Shanga. 

Pate Island 1 day tour can begin and end from Lamu Island, Manda Island or Kiwayu Island.

Pate Island is in the Lamu Archipelago and is situated off the Kenyan Coast, around 20 km's to the northeast of Lamu Island and is about 3 times the size of Lamu.

The Lamu Archipelago are the islands that lie between the towns of Lamu and Kiunga, near the Coast Province. It is a part of Lamu District.

The largest of the islands are Pate Island, Manda Island and Lamu Island. Smaller islands include Kiwayu, which lies in the Kiunga Marine National Reserve, and Manda Toto.

Today the largest town in the archipelago is Lamu Town, on Lamu Island. The town is on the World Heritage List.

The archipelago contains several archaeological/ historical sites of great significance, such as Takwa and Manda Town (both on Manda Island) and Shanga (on Pate Island).

Some have been partially excavated in later years, shedding important new light on Swahili history and culture.

Our tour visits Pate Island to see the ruins of the old town, see women making the traditional makuti for their beautiful thatched roofs and kofias for the Muslim men.

We also venture further to villages and towns such as Siyu with it’s incredible fort – more than a match for the one found in Lamu.

Pate Island | What to Do and See

FazaTown, on the North coast, dates back to the 13th C, when it was almost destroyed by the Pate army.

It was resettled and then dealt the same blow in 1587 by the Portuguese. Faza is now a modern Town and the central administrative center for Pate Island.

Pate Town is situated on the South-West coast of the island. The Town of Pate was founded by refugees from Oman in the 8th century and re-founded by members of the Nabahani family, also from Oman, in 1204.

The 18th century was known as the “Golden Age of Pate”, when the Town was at its height of powers and also prospered in fine arts.

Builders constructed some of the finest houses on the East Africa coast, with extensive elaborate plaster works.

The downfall of Pate Town came as a consequence of continuous quarreling/warring with its neighbors from the end of the 18th century. In 1813 the famous “Battle of Shela” took place at Shela.

This was an attempt by Pate, allied with the Mazrui clan from Mombasa/Oman, to subject Lamu. The attempt completely failed and many were killed.

Only a handful of people managed to return to Pate, and their losses were felt for years. By 1892 the number of inhabitants had fallen to only 300, down from 7000.

Agriculture and fishing are the main economic activities of the day.

Siyu Fort is located on Pate Island, at a point opposite Siyu Town across the tidal channel, which bisects the island at high water.

It lies some 25 km to the north east of Lamu Town and can be reached by boat from Lamu, up a long mangrove lined creek which is only navigable at high tide.

Siyu is the only Town that built a fort of its own, unlike Mombasa and Lamu where the forts were erected by foreigners.

Shanga is an important archaeological site, situated on the South-East coast of the island. It was excavated during an eight year period, starting in 1980.

The earliest settlement was dated to the eight century, and the conclusion drawn from archeological evidence (locally minted coins, burials) indicate that a small number of local inhabitants were Muslim, probably from the late eight century onwards, and at least from the early ninth.

Shanga was abandoned between 1400-1425.

Matondoni village Lamu Island day tour is a day excursion to one of the 3 villages located on Lamu Island called Matondoni. The other 2 villages are Shela and Kipungani.

Matondoni, on the north west mangrove shore of Lamu Island is about 8 km’s from Lamu Town. The village has mud and thatched huts and a few hundred people. The best place to see dhows being built is the village of Matondoni.

Matondoni is famous for making some of the finest dhows in the world, but with the disappearance of the great dhows in the 60’s the only demand left was for the smaller fishing dhow and now they are being pushed aside for fiberglass speedboats.

Some day soon the dhows of East Africa may become a thing of the past.

To visit Matondoni village, you may opt to use a donkey, dhow, speed boat or walk (2 Hours). The village is famous for traditional handicrafts such as weaving straw mats of palm leaves and making ropes of coconut.

This is a half day trip and it can be combined with a visit to Lamu Town.

Manda Island full day boat trip excursion Lamu Island is a full day tour from Lamu or Shela by motor boat to Manda Toto reef and begins by heading to for some snorkeling.

Most Captains prefer Manda toto because the reef is within the Manda – Pate channel which makes the sea calm with just small waves. There is good snorkeling close to the island and you can fish on the way with hand lines.

After snorkeling you move on to one of the deserted sandy beaches on the tiny island for a fish barbeque lunch. In the afternoon the trip heads to Gordon Reef for some more snorkeling before going back to your hotel.

Lamu Island full day dhow boat trip is an excursion around Lamu Island by boat. This is a full day trip and can take up to 5 to 7 hours.

Lamu Island is 14 km's in diameter. Sailing from Lamu or Shela along the Lamu – Mainland channel, stopover at Kipungani beach to swim, relax on the beach, and enjoy lunch.

The dhow crew will make a nice shed to protect you from direct sun. Lunch is included in the cost. On the way back, there is an option to visit the Matondoni or Kipungani villages.

The best place to see dhows being built is the village of Matondoni, in the island's northwest. It’s a peaceful little fishing village that receives few visitors, so the welcome is always warm.

Matondoni village is also famous for traditional crafts such as weaving straw mats of palm leaves and coconut ropes. Walk through the village and witness how local dhows are made and participate in basket weaving.

Kipungani, ‘the place of fresh air’, is a small village at the island's southwest tip where locals make straw mats, baskets, hats and kifumbu, used to squeeze milk from mashed coconut.

Depending on weather, the trip around Lamu Island can be arranged clock wise from the open sea or by following the channel between the mainland and Lamu Island.

Lake Kenyatta Day Game Drive Safari Lamu Island is a full day excursion to Lake Kenyatta – a fresh water lake located 2.5 km's on the southwest of the town of Mpeketoni.

Our day tour begins with sailing from Lamu Island to the Mokowe Jetty on the mainland. We then board our safari vehicle to Mpeketoni about 45 km's southwest of Mokowe jetty on the coast.

Along the way from Lamu Island to Mpeketoni we see huge mango trees. Mpeketoni town is said to be on a route that was used by the Arab traders taking their commodities "slaves" to Lamu Island.

The mangoes are also said to have grown from the seeds of the mangoes slaves were eating. We arrive mid morning at the township of Mpeketoni and proceed to Lake Kenyatta located  2.5 km's southwest of Mpeketoni.

Once at the Lake we proceed on a game drive along the fresh water lake and the wildlife areas.

Lake Kenyatta is home to baboons, monkeys, zebras, hippos, warthogs, buffalos, waterbucks, topis, hyenas, mongooses, pythons, dikdiks, impalas, hedgehogs and other seasonal game.

Also, a large number of wild birds are found here. These include mouse birds, flycatchers, bee-eaters, sunbirds, storks, egrets, herons, Vultures, weavers, Ibises and eagles.

We enjoy viewing hippos in the lake and also have an option of doing sport fishing with hooks. Later we have lunch at Mpeketoni town, followed by a mini-shopping tour and travel back to Lamu Island.
