Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Mausoleum Memorial Museum day tour is a full day excursion from Mwanza to Butiama – President Nyerere’s birthplace and hometown which lies within the Mara Region.

Butiama is located in the north-western side of Serengeti National Park, 60 km's from Ndabaka Gate (Western gate to Serengeti National Park). Butiama town is a 3 hour drive from Mwanza and once there, you will meet the Wazanaki ethnic group which is believed to be the smallest tribe in the region.

Our day tour offers you an opportunity to visit President Nyerere’s Memorial Museum, family home and his mausoleum which is now open to the public.

The museum displays documents of the life of this great statesman from his earliest days at Tabora Boys Secondary School, when he began his political career in the early 1950s, through to his contribution in the fight for Tanganyika‘s independence.

It includes his 23-year presidency, his life in politics until his voluntary retirement in 1985 to when he finally died on the 14th of October 1999.

The tour includes a guided walk around his homestead followed by a walk through traditional Wazanaki village learn more about the culture and then proceed to visit Kyarano dam, and the farms of Mwalimu Nyerere.

Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Mausoleum Memorial Museum Day Tour Itinerary

0800 Hours: Depart Mwanza and drive north toward Musoma. Observe the magnificent rolling landscapes during your journey. It is also possible to see zebras along the road as well as Masai tribesmen tending their flocks. The journey from Mwanza to Butiama takes about 3 hours.

1100 Hours: Arrive at Butaima, Mwalimu Nyerere homestead. Mwalimu Nyerere was a world famous scholar, writer and co-founder of the African National Liberation from colonialism.

He led his Tanzanian nation into a union of two independent countries, Tanganyika and Zanzibar, the only United Republic in Africa. During his leadership he promoted a philosophy of African love and collectivization implying family hood and African socialism.

A selfless and unselfish leader he matched the likes of Mahtama Gandhi. Although he died in 1999 he is still fondly called the Father of the Nation and frequent references are still made to the excellence of his leadership.  His home and tomb lies in Butiama.

Nyerere’s father was the chief of the Zanaki tribe.  In addition to the museum, there is a complex of several buildings including traditional tribal huts, Nyerere’s original home and the new one built using the retirement fund of Tanzanian military veterans.

Unfortunately, Nyerere’s was able to live only two weeks in this house before he died on 14 October, 1999 at the age of 77. Across the street is the Roman Catholic Church where he frequently attended Catholic Mass.

At the museum there are many exhibitions with explanations in Kiswahili and English. For example, the wording of his Gandhi Peace Prize of 1995 is written in English. There are exhibitions of Nyerere’s ordinary possessions such as his clothing, garden tools and walking stick.

There are also many gifts given to him by foreign visitors or during trips outside of Tanzania. There are also many honorary awards and academic degrees he received as well as pictures of him with world leaders include the Pope.

Outside the museum there is a cemetery across for the Marble Mausoleum where Nyerere was laid to rest. It is decorated with plastic flowers and a popular place for picture taking.

This small building is separated from the others and is very impressive and a nice place for quiet reflection on his contribution to the human family.

Nairobi Hiking Tour 5 km Oloolua Nature Trail Karen is an excursion to Oloolua Nature Trail situated 20 km's from the city centre in the Karen suburb.

Activities include: jogging, picnic, camping, short hikes, bird watching guided tours in the forest, visiting the caves, swamps and waterfalls.

Oloolua covers 250 hectares of indigenous tropical dry forest and is home to the Institute of Primate Research (IPR).

The National Museums of Kenya, the institution that runs this bio-medical research facility, established the 5 km's (3 miles) long Oloolua Nature Trail in part of this forest, providing an oasis of tranquility for city residents looking to escape the city hustle and bustle.

The Oloolua Nature Trail is a favourite with visitors coming to do a short hike, to jog along the trail, to walk their dogs, or just for a relaxing picnic in this serene setting.

Organized groups also come to learn about environmental conservation through guided tours in the forest.

Nairobi Hiking Tour 5 KM Oloolua Nature Trail Karen

The Oloolua nature trail meanders through thick forest vines and undergrowth below giant indigenous trees and bushes, in some places following the course of the Mbagathi River that cuts through the forest.

Giant riverside bamboo stands beckon you to descend some rickety stairs to the river and rest on benches built under the bamboo. Trickling water and chirping birds, the only sounds you hear as you rest, lull you into a reflective mood.

Further along the trail close to the river, you encounter a 33 meter long cave. If you brought a flashlight with you, an exploration of this dark subterranean world takes you through numerous underground caverns reputed to have once been home to Mau Mau freedom fighters during the colonial period of Kenya’s History.

A thick pile of guano underfoot and the occasional disturbance of bats flitting past you bring to your attention the existence of a bat colony within. A papyrus swamp further down the river offers a further glimpse into the rich biodiversity of this indigenous forest.

From here on, the trail climbs out of the river valley, occasional bursting upon glades bathed in bright sunlight before diving back under the canopy of the cool forest cover.

A picnic site complete with benches, drop toilets and trash bins offers a nice setting for couples or groups to rest, play or enjoy a meal within the forest.

For those wishing to spend more than a day in the forest, a secure campsite is also available complete with tap water, drop toilets, and firewood for lighting a bonfire.

You’ll have to bring your own tent, food and cooking utensils though. Last and perhaps the most spectacular of the attractions in the forest is a 20-foot waterfall close to the forest entrance.

As you pick your way along the trail to the waterfall, you’ll go past a wooden tower that was constructed some years back for viewing a Crowned Eagle’s nest that was situated nearby.

Scientists used this tower to study the Crowned Eagle’s behaviour in its natural habitat. Sadly, human activities and settlements close to the forest have resulted in the birds migrating from this haven.
