Akagera Park is located to the Eastern province of Rwanda on the border of Tanzania and is a comfortable 2 to 3 hour drive from Kigali – easily visited on a long day trip if you’re short of time.

Over the course of a four-hour visit, you're likely to see hippos, baboons, giraffes, antelope, zebras, warthogs, and perhaps even an elephant or two. The park has an amazing variety of wildlife and is entirely worth the visit.

0530 Hours: Depart from your Kigali hotel and drive South East to Akagera National park (2 Hours Drive).

The road is mostly paved until about a half hour before you get to the entrance when things get a bit bumpy and dusty… to get you ready for the park experience!

0800 Hours: Game drive in the park. The game on an Akagera safari includes most of the usual plains species.

Impala and topi (known as tsessebe in Southern Africa) seem to be dominant, with eland, oribi, giraffe, lion, leopard, waterbuck, reedbuck, bushbuck, sable and roan antelope also present. 

Burchall's zebra, hippo and crocodile are commonly seen whilst game viewing; buffalo are more prevalent in the north as are elephants, although more restricted.

Akagera National Park is especially good for birding, with over 480 species attracted by its diverse habitat. Savannah birds and raptors are prevalent and several endemic species such as the red-faced barbet are often seen.

1300 Hours: Game drive in the park. Short boat trips are available on Akagera’s lakes which will give you the opportunity to get close to the plentiful water birds including numerous eagles, storks, cranes, cormorants, herons and egrets.

1600 Hours: Late afternoon return back to Kigali.

Get to know Rwanda's most beautiful and amazing city – Kigali, learn about the country’s culture and history by visiting the cultural and historical sites of Kigali.

Kigali is Rwanda’s capital city and was named in 1907 by Dr. Richard Kandt, the first colonial resident governor of Rwanda. The city is built on several hills and valleys gaining the title – Hilly City or “the land of a thousand hills.

Kigali comprises of 3 major districts and these include Nyarugenge, Kicukiro as well as Gasabo. The total population of the people is about 1 million of which 70% of Kigali City is remote with close to 50% of its population being women and 60% are young.

Kigali 1 day Gorilla trekking trip Rwanda short safari is the quickest or shortest mountain gorilla trekking tour in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park. Taken as a day tour, following an early start from Kigali.

You arrive for a morning briefing and tea before choosing the closest gorilla group to trek. The trips usually return to Kigali before 1800 Hours.

The "Parc National de Volcans" (or PNV as it's known by locals) is a haven for the mountain gorillas and is home to 5 of the 8 volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains (Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo).

0500 Hours: Our early morning Hot Air Balloon Safari includes a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate before departure.
