Deloraine House

Deloraine House is a private holiday farm house located on the western edge of the Great Rift Valley on the lower slopes of Mount Londiani at Rongai Nakuru – Kenya

Deloraine is set in 3,500 acres of farm and is one of the finest examples of Colonial architecture. The house is just 45 minutes from Lake Nakuru National Park and about 191 km from Nairobi.

The home was built in the1920's by Lord Francis Scott, an early settler who became a leading politician in Kenya.

Kigali Day Trip Lake Kivu Cruise Itinerary

0730 Hours: Depart from your Kigali hotel after breakfast and drive to Lake Kivu. The distance from Kigali to Lake Kivu is 187 km on a tarmac road takes about 3 hours with no rush.

Heading north we proceed to the Volcanoes Mountains base town of Musanze located about 95 km, (approximately a 2.5 hours drive).

Musanze is Rwanda's most mountainous district, containing the largest part of the Volcanoes National Park. The area is home to most of the last mountain gorillas on earth.

We drive through Musanze and head west – to the shores of Lake Kivu, forming Rwanda’s western border with DR Congo another 65 km
(approximately 1.5 hours drive).

The real joy of this area is driving in this area, is that every corner produces another gorgeous view. Eucalyptus trees line the road, while every inch of the hills seems to be terraced with bananas.

Villagers smile, wave and children constantly call out “Abuzungu!" as you drive past (the Kinyarwanda term for white people, like “Muzungu" in Swahili).

You'll end up with hands tired from waving, and feel like royalty at the end of the trip!

1100 Hours: Upon arrival at Lake Kivu, we immediately embark on a 2 hour boat excursion on Lake Kivu.

The boat trip takes you around the nearby islands, passing close to Rwanda’s main breweries (BRALIRWA), Paradise Island, distant view of the Methans Gas Plant, and enjoy the beautiful sceneries of the terraced hillsides, amongst other attractions.

1300 Hours: The excursion returns to Paradis Lake Kivu Lodge water-front, where you disembark and proceed for lunch at Paradis Lake Kivu Lodge restaurant.

1400 Hours: We depart Lake Kivu for a scenic drive back to Kigali making an optional stop for souvenir shopping en-route to the city. (Distance about 160 km/ about a 4 hour drive).

Saruni Rhino Samburu Luxury Lodge

Saruni Rhino Samburu Luxury Lodge is an intimate 3 Banda lodge (with a capacity of 4 to 6 guests) from where to track the endangered black rhino.

Situated in the Sera Community Conservancy in northern Kenya, Saruni Rhino is about a 2 hour drive from the Samburu National Reserve.

Built between beautiful doum palms on the banks of the seasonal Kauro River, the camp offers safaris specifically focused on tracking the critically endangered black rhino on foot using radio telemetry equipment.

Saruni Rhino has two bandas, one sleeping 2 to 4 in one double and two single beds, and the other two in a double.

Both bandas are similar: thatch and stone structures open on one side, looking onto the river-bed and a watering-hole that attracts wildlife including elephant, reticulated giraffe, impala, oryx, Grevy's zebra, hyena and number of bird-species.

Each has a comfortable bed covered in traditional print, sofas and rugs, and outside tables and chairs. Both offer a bathroom with shower, mirrors, twin basins, hot water and flush-toilet – though only one is technically en suite.

One Banda also has a hammock. The lodge itself is very comfortable, but it’s also simple and remote – so only come here if you enjoy travelling to areas off the beaten path.

Please be aware that Wi-Fi is non-existent and cell-phone coverage unreliable; the solar power is sufficient for batteries, but not for appliances such as hairdryers.

Saruni Rhino offers Italian-inspired food which is excellent: breakfast offerings include fresh fruit and bacon and eggs, lunch dishes such as salad and pizza, and a full three-course hot dinner in the evening.

Meals are often served in the dry river-bed that runs along the edge of the camp, which is an omissible experience.

Activities include big 5 game viewing, night game drives, bird watching, game walks; game drives, Gourmet Picnic, rhino tracking, and guided walks.

It is also important to note that the guides leading the walks are not armed and so only guests who have done many walking safaris before should consider a stay here.
