Elephant Hill Aberdare National Park Nairobi 1 Day Tour is one of African Spice Safaris Hiking day tour from Nairobi – Kenya to the Elephant hill located in the Aberdares National Park.

The Aberdares Ranges are situated west of Mt Kenya in the central highlands between Nyeri and Naivasha, and stretch 70km long from North to South.

They are the water catchment area feeding two of the largest dams supplying over 95% of Nairobi’s water needs, i.e. Ndakaini Dam in the

Thika region and Sasumua Dam near Njabini town. The Elephant hill is about 3906 meters/ 12815 feet in altitude making it a perfect trek if you intend to climb higher mountains like Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, Mount Meru or Mount Elgon.

This tour can be booked as a private excursion from Nairobi and departs any-day of the week. Elephant hill is located 90 km away from Nairobi and the hike begins at Njabini Forest Gate.

The walking duration takes about 7 hours and the hike ends back at Njabini Forest Gate where we board our safari vehicle for a transfer back to Nairobi.

The hike is rated as moderate to high. You need to be reasonably fit to do this climb. The highlights includes amazing scenery, bird watching and wildlife along the trail, plants and flowers e.g Loberia, Giant heather etc.

There also wonderful views of the surrounding countryside including Naivasha, Thika, Sasumua Dam, Ndakaini Dam among others.

Elephant Hill Aberdare National Park Nairobi 1 Day Tour Itinerary

0600 Hours: After an early breakfast we depart from your hotel/ residence for the Aberdare National park to Njabini Forest Station (former Kinangop South Forest Station), about 4 km from Njabini shopping centre. The drive takes about 2 hours.

0800 Hours: We arrive at the Njabini Forest Station and meet our ranger/ guides who will accompany you to the summit.

0830 Hours: After a short briefing, the hike begins. The terrain goes through the forest, thickets, bamboo forest and the cold mist on open areas.

The hike up the hill takes 4 to 5 hours from an altitude of 2500 meters at the Forest Station. The first 5km km is over relatively flat plantation forest followed by a Bamboo zone.

The follows the alpine zone with Giant Lobelia, Tussock Grass, and Giant Heather among others. At the elephant’s rump, one can view Sasumua Dam down below to your right, and the distant Ndakaini Dam to your left.

The rest of the hike goes over slightly rocky terrain at an altitude of over 3400 meters above sea level, with the temperature dropping significantly, as you pick you way across the elephant’s back.

1300 Hours: Once at the summit one can see the distinctive Kinangop peak, the second highest point on the Aberdares can be seen to the north.

1400 Hours: The descent is just as trying as the ascent, taking a big toll on the knees, and another 3 to 4 hours to the Forest station.

1700 Hours: After conquering the challenge and thoroughly testing our fitness and acclimatization prowess, we will embark on our journey back to Nairobi:

1830 Hours to 1900 Hours: Arrive back in Nairobi

Kijiji Cottages has 5 cottages namely Almond cottage, Bonde Cottage, Spring cottage, Kasuku Cottage and Komba Cottage.

Almond cottage has 2 en-suite bedrooms; 1 double room and 1 with 3 single beds all with fans.

There is bright and airy lounge that leads to an outside verandah with sea view, a fully equipped kitchen and a dining room which also leads out to an outdoor patio with sea view.

Bonde cottage is built up on a small coral cliff overlooking the sea and has 3 floors. There are 3 bedrooms all with fans.

There is also a massage table in the top bathroom. Spring cottage has 4 en-suite bedrooms; 3 doubles and 1 twin.

There is also another smaller covered seated area with good views on the second floor terrace where there are also sun beds.

The first floor with one double can be rented by itself. Kasuku cottage has 3 double en-suite guestrooms that can comfortably accommodate 6 guests.

There is a well equipped kitchen and large open indoor dining/sitting room on the ground floor and an extra outdoor shaded dining table.
