Nyungwe National Park 1 Day Chimpanzee Trekking Rwanda Safari is a full day tour from Kigali to Nyungwe Forest National park located 225 km from Kigali, Rwanda. Nyungwe Forest National Park is a 4 to 5 hour drive from Kigali on good roads.

The drive en-route to Nyungwe from Kigali offers attractions such as Nyanza King’s Palace and the National Museum should you wish to break the journey.

Nyungwe is an ideal destination for lovers of primates and most visitors in Rwanda will go for at least one tracking experience, the most popular of which is chimpanzee trekking.

Other activities in Nyungwe Forest National Park besides tracking the famous chimpanzees include experiencing the canopy walk, bird watching, excursions to Lake Kivu and Gisakura tea factory, scaling Mt Bigugu and expedition to Kamiranzovu Marsh.

Covering over 1000 square km, Nyungwe is one of the world’s most beautiful and pristine mountain rainforests. The park is home to habituated chimpanzees and 12 other primates species (including a 400-strong troop of habituated Ruwenzori Black & White Colobus).

The park is also a birder’s paradise with over 300 species, including 16 endemics, and is home to 75 different species of mammal. Nyungwe Forest National Park is the only place where we have seen the troops of many 300 colobus monkeys that travel in the trees.

Nyungwe National Park 1 Day Chimpanzee Trekking Rwanda Safari Itinerary

Our 1 day Nyungwe Forest National Park chimpanzee trekking tour begins with an early morning pick up from your hotel in Kigali. Our safari driver guide picks you up and transfer you to the Nyungwe National Park.

Check-in to the park then a briefing about the trek at the Uwinka visitors center. The forest is rich in botanical diversity hosting over 200 species of trees and flowering plants and about 300 bird species.

The forest is also home to 13 species of primates including Olive baboons, L’Hoest’s monkeys, Ruwenzori colobus, Vervet monkeys, silver monkey, Grey-cheeked manga-bey, red-tailed monkey etc.

You will most likely sight some of these forest inhabitants on your chimpanzee trekking. After receiving a briefing and depending on the number of people present for the chimpanzee trek you will be divided into two groups.

One will track starting at the Uwinka center and another starting at Cyamudongo – which will require your driver guide to transfer you to the starting point.

Your range guide will be in communication with the trackers who live early morning to locate where the chimpanzee nested the previous night.

The duration of your trek depends on the location of the chimps – this could take from 30 minutes to 2 hours to find them. Long before you see the Chimpanzees, you can hear their almost deafening screams, their hoots, and cackles.

You are allowed to stay with the chimps for only 1 hour after locating them, photography is allowed but be reminded that the flash is prohibited. We suggest that you dress for the occasion. Have a daypack with binoculars, mineral water and snacks.

Wear a good pair of hiking boots, long trousers, long-sleeved shirt, have a light rain jacket that you can put into your backpack, add a hat that will keep the sun out of your face.

After that you will do the Canopy walk which will last for 2 hours and then begin the journey back to Kigali.

Congo Gorilla Trekking Virunga National Park 1 Day Rwanda Safari is a popular day excursion for trekking gorillas in Virunga National Park. Virunga National Park is located in Eastern side of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Situated in the center of the Albertine Rift, between Uganda and Rwanda, Virunga’s 7,800 square km (3,000 square miles) stretches from the Virunga Massif in the south, to the Rwenzori Mountains in the north.

Virunga National Park was founded in 1925 as Parc Albert. It was the first national park to be established on the continent of Africa. Virunga National Park is habitat to about 200 of gorillas that live mostly in the southern side of the park.

Gorilla trekking in Congo Virunga National Park is popular because the cost of gorilla permits is low. Rwanda gorilla permits cost about 1500 US Dollars per person whileUganda gorilla permits costs 600 US Dollars per person. The Democratic Republic of Congo gorilla permits costs only 400 US Dollars per person.

In addition to this Virunga National Park is less congested compared to other tracking places like Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda.

Virunga National Park activities include Mountain gorilla trekking, chimpanzees tracking safaris, nature walks, Nyiragongo active volcano hike, sightseeing and landscape viewing and birding watching.

Virunga’s most prominent animals include forest and savanna elephants, buffalos, duiker, hippos, okapis, lions, and Mountain Gorillas, Eastern Lowland Gorilla, and Eastern Chimpanzee. Bird species include Grey Crowned-Crane, African Fish Eagle, Shoebill and Great Blue Turaco etc.

Congo Gorilla Trekking Virunga National Park 1 Day Rwanda Safari Detailed Itinerary

0400 Hours: Our 1 day gorilla trekking safari adventure from in Kigali begins with an early pick up from your hotel by our safari driver guide followed by a transfer to Virunga National Park. Kindly note that we can also start from Kisoro town or Goma town.

The drive takes about 3 hours from Kigali city to the town of Gisenyi. Gisenyi sharing a common border with Goma, the city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Goma is about 30 miles/ 48 km (1 hour driving time) to the Virunga National Park Headquarters.

0800 Hours: Upon arrival at the Virunga National Park Headquarters we register and get a briefing about the gorilla trekking adventure.  We then transfer to the gorilla trekking start point in the Park.

A game ranger accompanies you in the search for the gorillas. Only a maximum of 8 individuals per day are allowed to trek. The reason is to help to reduce the spreading of diseases from humans to the mountain gorillas.

Only children aged 15 years and above are allowed to go for the trek. Gorilla trekking takes place during day time and it’s between 0800 hours to 1900 hours and once you get to meet them you are given strictly 1 hour to spend with the mountain gorillas.

Your Gorilla trekking adventure can take as little as an hour or can even go on longer till 5 hours. On some days it can be a 20 to 40 minutes hike from the way into the forest.

Other days it can take more than an hour’s walk to get to the Mountain gorillas since they are always on the move in search for food.

After we trek back to the base of Virunga Volcanic Mountain range to meet up with our driver and begin our journey back to Kigali – Rwanda. Those who started the tour from Kisoro town or Goma town will also be dropped back to their respective places of their residence.

Gorilla Trekking Bwindi Forest National Park 1 Day Rwanda Safari Detailed Itinerary

0300 Hours: Depart with breakfast boxes from your hotel in Kigali and transfer you to Uganda Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The journey travels from Kigali to Cyanika border to Kisoro and on to southern Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Rushaga.

Alternatively you will drive to Katuna border to Kabale takes about 3 hours (border processes can take maximum 30 minutes). Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is another 2 hours driver from Cyanika border or Katuna border and on to Ruhija in the northern sector of Bwindi national park.

All this depends on the availability of gorilla permits in either sector of the park.

0800 Hours: On arrival at your respective tracking sector (Bwindi National Park has four ‘4’ main trailheads where gorilla trekking is always conducted and they include Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaga).

You will join the rest of the visitors for the early morning briefing by one of the professional park officials. Each sector has its own habituated gorilla families and each group also offers unique experiences.

You will be briefed on how to behave while you are with the rare mountain gorillas in the habitats and all the rules must be observed at all times as explained to you by the park official.

After briefing, you will be assigned to one habituated gorilla group to track in a group of only (eight) visitors and you will be accompanied by a guide. About 14 gorilla families are available in Bwindi for both gorilla trekking and habituation experience.

Up on getting your respective gorilla troop, you will have only an hour of face to face encounter with these rare wild creatures, take as many photos as you can, explore their general behavior and body gestures.

Your guide will interpret to you the meaning of some of the gestures. A trek to see a group of these fascination primates, requires you to take with you  adequate drinking water and energy giving snacks/ packed lunch.

You will hike into the tropical forest following specific trails in search of the allocated gorilla family. The trekking time range from 30 minutes to several hours but the interaction with gorillas last for an hour.

After, you will have lunch and then drive back to Kigali which marks the end of your one day gorilla safari.

Dian Fossey Hike Volcanoes National Park 1 Day Tour begins from Kigali and ends in Kigali Rwanda. The actual trek is a half day adventure and takes about  2.5 hours to climb up, 1 hour at the site and just over 1.5 hours coming down during the wet season (in the dry season you could do it faster).

The 5 km hike up the mountain includes possibilities of seeing forest elephants, forest buffaloes, lots of birds as you pass through various vegetation zones.

In 1967, Dian Fossey arrived in Rwanda to study and protect her beloved Mountain Gorillas from poachers found in the Virunga ranges of Rwanda commonly known as Volcanoes national park.

Dian Fossey 1 Day Hike is about Diane Fossey who is remembered in the history of Rwanda for founding the Karisoke Research Center which was her residence until the time of her violent death in 1985.

The camp site stands at an altitude of around 3000 meters (over 9000 feet) and was abandoned during the unrest of the 1990’s. Karisoke scientific base is located in the saddle area between two volcanoes; Mt Visoke and Mt Karisimbi (from which the name Karisoke is derived).

All that remains today is the graveyard where several of Dian Fossey’s favorite gorillas were buried. Dian Fossey is also buried near the graves of her beloved gorillas. Dian Fossey was an American naturalist who earned recognition as the foremost authority on the mountain gorilla, is already well known.

Shortly before her violent murder in 1985, she published her own account of her 13 years of work with the gorillas in Rwanda. She has already been the subject of several biographical studies, and she was portrayed by Sigourney Weaver in the highly fictionalized 1988 movie ''Gorillas in the Mist.''

Dian Fossey Hike Volcanoes National Park 1 Day Tour Itinerary

0430 Hours: Dian Fossey Hike Volcanoes National Park 1 Day Tour begins with a pick up from your hotel in Kigali, followed by a 3 hour road transfer to Volcanoes National park, Musanze province (where Mountain Gorillas trackking begins).

0730 Hours: Once at the at the park headquarters of Kinigi we meet with the other hikers and our park ranger guide. The rangers brief the hikers about the park, the 5 Virunga volcanoes shared on the Rwanda side and also offer an insight on what to expect during the hike.

All the rangers work for the park authorities and are seasoned guides and boast a wealth of knowledgeable. Many of the rangers are natives who hail from Kinigi area and have been working with the park from when they were young.

0800 Hours: The trek involves a 30 minutes drive from the park headquarters to the trail head to access the Karisoke research camp where visitors walk for 10 minutes to the park boundary.

The hike start at around an elevation of 6000 feet, and the sign at the camp site said the elevation was 2967 meters (9734 feet).

The walk from the park boundary to the research center where the Dian’s grave is, takes about an hour to 2 hour and a half hours and affords good views of forest hogs, forest elephants, a variety of primates and bird species.

The hike takes almost two hours one way with stops for water in between. As the hike involves moving through the forests and hiking up the slopes, it requires some relative degree of fitness and patience.

The terrain especially during the rainy season is very muddy, you need to take care where you step to avoid falling or losing a shoe. The walking sticks help with this a lot.

The trek includes an armed escort, and the guides will give you loads of information about Dian Fossey, her research centre and the surrounding vegetation. If you’re lucky, you might also see elephants, buffalos and a variety of birds.

1100 Hours: At the site you will find the house from where Dian Fossey was mysteriously murdered in 1985 but the more peaceful is the place where she was buried just next to her favorite gorilla friend, Digit and about 20 other mountain gorillas either killed by poachers or suffered death for other reasons.

After visiting all the different ruins of the research centre, you’ll stop for lunch before heading back down the mountain.

1430 Hours: Head to the nearby restaurant to get your shoes and socks cleaned.

Mount Bisoke Hiking Volcanoes National Park Rwanda 1 Day Tour is one of the best hikes in Rwanda because of the beautiful scenery and great views of the lush Virungas and Rwanda’s hilly landscape. Mount Bisoke. Mt. Bisoke is one of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga mountains range of the albertine Rift, the western part of east African rift.

During the trek, you are likely to encounter unique mountain wildlife such as Mountain Gorillas, Golden Monkeys, Forest Elephants, Buffaloes and lots of different species of birds. Mount Bisoke is also known as also Visoke and stands at 3711 meters/ 12175 Feet above sea level. The top of this Volcano has a spectacular crater lake.

Mount Bisoke is a dormant volcano located in between two neighboring national parks across the Rwanda & the Democratic republic of Congo which the volcanoes national park on the Rwandan side and the Virunga national park in Democratic republic of Congo.

Mount Busoke is located approximately 35 km northeast of the town of Goma and adjacent Lake Kivu.  The drive from Kigali City to Volcanoes National Park takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes.

“Bisoke” is a kiswahili word which means, “soaked with water”, that was coined by the locals in reference to the two beautiful crater lakes that ‘soak’ the volcano.  Hiking Mount Bisoke does not require any hiking experience; you only need to be physically fit, due to the high elevation and length of the climb.

The entire round trip hike takes about 6 hours, 4 hours to climb to the top and 2 hours to descent idown. Experienced hikers are capable of hiking  to the top in 3 hours or even less, and roughly 1 & ½ or less, back.

Mount Bisoke Hiking Volcanoes National Park Rwanda 1 Day Tour

Mount Bisoke Hiking Volcanoes National Park Rwanda 1 Day Tour begins and ends from Kigali city. Below is the itinerary

0430 Hours: The tour begins with a pick up from your hotel in Kgali, followed by a transfer to Volcanoes National park, Musanze province.

0700 Hours: Once at the at the park headquarters of Kinigi we meet with the other hikers and our park ranger guide. The rangers brief the hikers about the park, the 5 Virunga volcanoes shared on the Rwanda side and also offer an insight on what to expect during the hike.

0800 Hours: After the briefing, we transfer to Bisoke Volcano hiking start point/ Bisoke head trail – a 40 minutes drive from the headquarters. The first 15 minutes are on a paved road while the rest is bumpy ride on volcanic rocks.

0900 Hours: Once at Bisoke head trail which stands at 2700 meters/ 8850 above sea level, we hire a porter and begin to climb.  Your bag may seem light initially however, as you ascend the mountain it gets heavy.

The porters will help in providing a push or pull through the challenging spots, such as muddy, steep & slippery. The first 10 or so minutes of our hike goes through villages and  farmlands along the edge of the park then we go past a stone wall into Volcanoes National Park.

The stone wall fence of the park keeps buffalos and forest elephants inside the park and also controls intruders from trespassing into the park.
Mountain Bisoke is home to some habituated Gorilla families and you stand a good chance of encountering these at the start of your ascent up the mountain.

If by chance you encounter some gorillas, the guides allow you to watch them for a few minutes while on the hiking trail. Photography is prohibited as this excursion does not include permits for Gorrilla trekking.

You may also get to see Golden Monkey troop on your trek up Mountain Bisoke. The mountain is also home to Forest elephants and buffaloes however chances of sighting them are minimal.

The hike up Mt Busoke takes about 4 hours and another 2 hours descending down to the starting point but this depends on your speed and the frequency of stops.

Near the summit is the Crater Lake, which features drier vegetation than other parts of the park, with giant heather growing all over the slopes of the volcano.

1300 Hours: Once at the summit, you get enjoy fantastic views of the other five volcanoes and the beautiful Twin Lakes. The amount of time you spend on the summit depends on the weather and temperature. Enjoy picnic lunch at the summit, as you take  pictures.

1400 Hours: With your guides and porters start descending to the starting point.

1600 Hours: Meet up with your guide for drop off at either a hotel/ Kigali International Airport.

Agahozo Shalom Rwandan Orphaned Youth Village 1 Day Visit: If you are in Kigali – Rwanda with a day to spare, make sure to travel to Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village. Agahozo Shalom Youth Village (ASYV) is a home for orphans of the genocide and AIDs in Rwanda.

It was originally set up to educate the orphans of the 1994 genocide against Tutsi when 800,000 people were killed during 100 days of ethnic fighting, are still felt by the young generation.

Many women were raped and contracted HIV but did not get proper medical care, and died afterward, leaving young children behind. The genocide led to many social hardships. One of the primary issues still facing the country is a high number of orphaned children and vulnerable youth.

Many live in poverty, sheltered by guardians who cannot afford a regular supply of food or clean water, let alone school fees and medical expenses. Although Rwanda has made strides in providing its youth with access to education, about 70% of Rwandans are still unable to enroll in secondary school.

Rwanda as a country has a population of 12.5 million and out of these there are over there are 2.8 million orphans and vulnerable children in Rwanda today.  Many cannot think beyond their next meal, let alone dream about the future.

At Agahozo Shalom Youth Village, most of them are orphans (which mean they have lost one or both parents). The community is currently home to more than 500 teenagers, ages 14 to 21 from all 30 districts of Rwanda.

The Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village empowers orphaned and vulnerable Rwandan youth to build lives of dignity and contribute to a better world. The village provides students a campus with a dining room, high school, health care clinic, homes, workshop spaces, plumbing, internet service, etc.

The students study biology, history, math, economics, language, literature, agriculture, music, mechanization, etc. Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village spends at least 4,000 US Dollars per year per student, compared to Rwandan public schools, which spend between 800 to 1,000 US Dollars per student per year.

A visit to the youth village allows you to learn how parenting is done by the community, and it’s done in a structure to give all of the support. These are homes, not dormitories, each home has a mama, a big brother or sister and graduates of Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village who act as mentors and we also have cousins, who are long-term volunteers.”

A tour of the Village is generally 2 to 3 hours long. It begins at the center of the Village at the Mango Tree and includes a visit to a family home, the amphitheater, the farm, the science and art centers, the school, and the dining hall.

0400 Hours: This morning we take our breakfast boxes + lunch boxes from our hotel in Kigali and deart by road to Ruhengeri – a 2 hour drive. After crossing the Cyanika border (border processes can take maximum 30 minutes) we proceed to Kisoro Uganda another 20 minutes drive.

Proceed to Mgahinga Gorilla National park located in South West Uganda about 10 km south of Kisoro town. Maximum time from Kigali to Kisoro is about 4 hours.

0800 Hours: Golden monkey tracking briefing (on the dos and don’ts of tracking the golden monkeys) starts at the Park headquarters. Its a good idea to take with you a daypack, a snack such as dried fruit, a large bottle water and binoculars for bird watching.

After the briefing, we begin the trek up into the forest along what is referred to as the Gahinga Trail. Hiking through the forests to sight the golden monkeys is not so strenuous like gorilla trekking because golden monkeys live in lower areas, so tourists do not track for more than 3 hours.

Golden Monkey Tracking Volcanoes National Park 1 Day Trip Safari; Have a day to spare in Kigali? Opt to explore Volcanoes National Park on a golden monkey expedition in the company of an experienced African Spice Safaris guide.

Spend a half a day in Volcanoes National Park – Rwanda tracking the Golden Monkeys. The golden monkey has a prominent golden fur coat and is an endangered species.

Given the scientific name of Cercopithecus mitis kandti, the golden monkey is considered to be a subspecies of the Sykes monkey. They are exclusive to the Virunga mountain range.

The only places where one can trek to see them up close include Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda. These monkeys live in bamboo forests at the higher elevations of the Virunga mountains, as well as at the foot of Sabyinyo Mountain.

There are two habituated troops with in volcanoes national park and the larger troop found in Sabyinyo has between 80 to 100 members and this one is the most visited troop.

There is always one session for golden monkey tracking per day and this takes place early in the morning in Volcanoes National Park. Here the visitors have to report at the headquarters by 0700 hours where they will meet the ranger guides for the briefing and then drive to the starting point of the trek.

Those who need porter assistance to carry photographic and other equipment can hire them at the base point of the trek. The drive takes only 15 minutes from the edge of the park.

Trekking golden monkeys and gorillas is a similar experience – in a small group of no more than 8 guests, and you can spend one hour with the monkeys once you find them. The time to spend in the jungle is not specific.

It can be as short as 30 minutes to several hours depending on the speed of movement for the monkeys. Most trackers are able to locate them as they hike along the trail, with in less than an hour.

When you near the monkeys, your guide will point them out in the trees and you can watch as they swing above, foraging for food. Golden monkeys are small in size around 15 Kilos, get their name from the long golden hair on their backs, and move around the bamboo forest like they are court jesters.

You will spend about an hour watching these fast-moving little creatures that live in social groups of up to 100 individuals and are very entertaining as they constantly swing through the bamboo or chase each other in circles all around you.

They’re also very pretty, with shiny reddish-gold backs that blend in perfectly with the golden bamboo. The two groups of habituated monkeys are getting more used to their human visitors.

So don't be surprised if they jump quite close, and be aware of standing directly underneath a group in the trees, as they can easily poop on you at times! After an hour in their company you will trek back to the park headquarters.Transfer back to Kigali city reaching in the afternoon.

Golden Monkey Tracking Volcanoes National Park 1 Day Trip Safari Detailed Itinerary

0430 Hours: Depart Kigali for Volcanoes National Park. The park is located in Northwestern Rwanda and runs along the Border of Uganda and DRC. Volcanoes is 105 km West of Kigali Town, by road it takes only 2 hours to drive on a comfortable tarmac road to the Park.

Guests who stay in Kinigi or Musanze are located closer to Volcanoes National Park hence are pick alittle later for the trip. The Golden monkey trek begins by reporting to the park headquarters at 0700 hours for a briefing.

Professional friendly guides offer a brief you on what to expect on your trip and the guidelines (the do’s and don’ts). After the briefing you will drive to the trailhead at the edge of the park about 15 minutes away.

For a small fee, you’ll also have the choice to hire a porter to accompany you on the trek, to help carry your backpack and offer a hand during tricky parts of the hike. Even if you don’t really need them, hiring a porter is a helpful way to contribute directly to the local economy.

The actual trek in search of these wonderful creatures then starts by 0800 hours in the company of your trekking guides. You travel through villages and farmland before getting to higher elevation.

The duration of your trek depends on the location of the golden monkey group. The monkeys can cover a fair amount of distance daily, so it can sometimes take a while for the trackers to locate them.

They can easily be found (within about 30 to 60 minutes) since they usually inhabit the foothills of the mountains in the bamboo forest.

The two groups of habituated monkeys are getting more used to their human visitors, so don't be surprised if they jump quite close, and be aware of standing directly underneath a group in the trees, as little ‘presents’ can drop down at times!

Once you’re with the golden monkeys, you’re allowed an hour, maximum, with them before heading back.

     Golden Monkey Trekking Rules

    * You won’t be allowed to eat or drink when you’re with the golden monkeys, and smoking is not allowed during the trek
    * When you’re with your group, you should try not to make sudden movements and to keep your voices low so that the group remains relaxed. Although these monkeys are now used to seeing people, do bear in mind that they are still wild animals and can sometimes react unexpectedly, so always heed your guide’s and trackers’ instructions

2 Day Rwanda Hiking Tour Mt Karisimbi Volcanoes National Park is a short two-day guided trek to the summit of Mt Karisimbi in Rwanda. The name Karisimbi in Kinyarwanda means snow. Snow can mostly be found during the dry season in June, July and August on the top of the volcano.

Mount Karisimbi is an inactive volcano in the Virunga Mountains on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Karisimbi is the 11th highest mountain of Africa standing at 4,507 metres or (14,787 feet).

Being a dormant volcano, it is the highest of 8 in the Virunga volcanic chain and the highest point of Rwanda. Climbing Mt Karisimbi (6th highest mountain in Africa, after Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, Ruwenzori, Mount Meru (Tanzania) and Ras Dashen in Ethiopia’s Simien Mountains) is a two-day excursion.

It's a long trek, without any technical barriers. The mountain is located 30 km from Lake Kivu and the drive from the capital of Rwanda, Kigali to Mount Karisimbi about 80 km.

Our 2 day Mt Karisimbi climbing tour begins from Kigali International Airport or Kigali city. The drive takes about 2 hours. Once at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters you will meet your guide and begin your drive to the  the start point for your trek.

From here it’s a drive of an hour or so to the start of the trail, at around 2,600 meters/ 8500 feet above sea level, where you will join your porters, and begin the trek.

On the first day, you spend 6 hours hiking and climbing to the 3700 meter/ 12100 feet above sea level where you stay at an overnight camp on the slopes of Mt Karisimbi. (Camping gear and food is required for this trip…and though you are in Africa, it gets cold here at night).

The next day you continue to the summit at about 4,507 meters/ 14,787 feet). The summit offers spectacular and magnificent views of different volcanoes including Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira volcanoes. The descent takes about 6 hours.

A hike to Karisimbi’s summit is not an ordinary one, but also affords sights of several bird varieties, primates like monkeys and Gorillas since the volcano lies in the primates’ park of Parc National des Volcans (Volcanoes national park).
