Many species found only in the north of Kenya can be seen here‚ including gerenuk‚ Grevy’s zebra‚ oryx and reticulated giraffe. Other species that live here include lion‚ leopard‚ cheetah‚ elephants‚ buffalo‚ hippo‚ crocodile‚ dik-dik‚ and waterbuck.

Activities and attractions of Samburu include learning more about the fascinating culture of the Samburu tribe, game drives, camel rides, guided walks, bush meals, sundowner, discovering the rare five species (Beisa oryx, the Somali ostrich, gerenuk, the reticulated giraffe, and Grevy’s zebra) climbing Mount Ol Lolokwe (5-hour hike) and the singing Wells of Samburu.

The 3 reserves Samburu, Buffalo Springs, and Shaba are key sites for bird watching. Over 350 species of bird have been recorded‚ including fascinating birds such as Somali ostrich, Dusky and Donaldson’s smith nightjars, White-headed mousebird, D’Arnaud’s barbet, Somali bee-eater, Golden pipit, Donaldson’s smith sparrow weaver, Golden-breasted starling, Rosy-patched bush shrike, and Black-capped social weaver, etc.

Safari Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: Nairobi – Fly to Samburu National Reserve

This morning we travel by light aircraft to Kenya’s northern frontier. Wild and rugged, Samburu is fiercely beautiful with its arid savannahs watered by the lovely Uaso Nyiro River.

It is also one of Kenya’s most protected areas and home to species only found north of the equator, from the reticulated giraffe to Grevy’s zebras and Beisa oryxes.

We also enjoy Larsens Tented Camp, our luxurious hostelry set beneath a canopy of acacia trees along the banks of the river.

Overnight Accommodation: Larsens Tented Camp or similar
Meal Plan: {Lunch & Dinner}

Day 2: Explore Samburu National Reserve

Dawn breaks in golden bands as we start our day in the bush by scanning the river from our tent’s veranda with a cup of steaming coffee in hand.

Before the dew is off the grass, we’re off in pursuit of the elephants, lions, leopards, and cheetahs that thrive in the reserve’s grasslands and acacia woodlands.

And so the day is spent in alternating pursuits of exploration in the bush and relaxation in our cosy camp.

Overnight Accommodation: Larsens Tented Camp or similar
Meal Plan: {Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner}

Day 3: Samburu National Reserve Fly to Nairobi

We enjoy an early morning game drive and return to the lodge or camp for breakfast and then we fly to Nairobi. We have lunch at our Nairobi Hotel. The rest of your afternoon is at leisure.

You might take this opportunity to visit a few stores which have displays and items about Kenya and Tanzania’s cultural heritage, and offers unique carvings, artefacts, clothing, and gemstones to augment and expand the experiences you’ve had on your visit.

As we leave Africa we know that the adage is true: you may leave Africa, but Africa will never leave you.
