3 Nights/ 4 Days Sweetwaters/ Ol-Pejeta & Samburu Safari

4 Days/ 3 Nights Sweetwaters/ Ol-Pejeta & Samburu Game Reserve Safari from Nairobi starts with Sweetwaters Game Reserve - a 70,000-acre private ranch with magnificent views across the plains to the snow capped peaks of Mount Kenya.

This game sanctuary is the closest reserve to Nairobi (3.5 hours drive) home to all the big five game, and has the highest ratio of game-to-area of any park or reserve in Kenya. Its popular waterhole is floodlit by night, providing excellent and secluded rarely seen game viewing.

Game drives at Sweetwaters are indeed a pleasure. Game viewing may also take the form of game walks accompanied by our Resident Naturalist, and game rides on horseback.

Camel riding, night game drives and "bush" lunches or dinners are a delight. The Chimpanzee Sanctuary is most informative and entertaining and should all be visited while in the Game Reserve.

The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is incorporated within the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and is the only place in Kenya where this highly endangered and remarkably intelligent species can be seen.

The second game reserve we get to visit on our 4 Days/ 3 Nights is Samburu National Reserve - a not very well-known, but definitely worth a visit. It is situated on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in Kenya.

This means plenty of water, trees and shade to attract wildlife like elephant, lion, giraffe and zebra from the surrounding savannah plains. Leopards are also regularly spotted.

The reserve is not particularly well-known and is therefore not too crowded - a huge plus in Kenya where so many reserves are often overflowing with tourists. It is often grouped together with the Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves as they lie so close together.

4 Days/ 3 Nights Sweetwaters/ Ol-Pejeta & Samburu Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Drive to Sweetwaters/ Ol Pejeta Game Sanctuary
This morning we depart Nairobi and proceed north, driving through lush tea and coffee estates to Sweetwaters Tented Camp. Sweetwaters land, the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and its sumptuous ranch were once the private domain of famed multi-millionaire, Adnan Kashoggi.

We visit the Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a charming haven established by the Jane Goodall Institute to provide sanctuary to orphaned chimps, and the specially protected and fenced refuge of black rhino with its stunning forty specimens!

In fact Sweetwaters boasts excellent game viewing with the highest ratio of game to area of any park or reserve in Kenya. In addition to the chimps and the black rhinos, you will have a chance to view an amazing variety of wildlife such as zebra, lion, leopard, thomson’s gazelle, grant’s gazelle, oryx, eland, baboon, elephant and various species of birds.

Day 2: Sweetwaters – Drive to Samburu Game Reserve
This morning we travel by road to Kenya’s northern frontier. Wild and rugged, Samburu is fiercely beautiful with its arid savannahs watered by the lovely Uaso Nyiro River.

Of all the East African major savanna reserves, Samburu is renowned for its rare species of fauna known as the ‘Samburu five’. These five particular animals are usually only found north of the equator – the long necked gerenuk a remarkable antelope which spends much of its time on its hind legs searching for succulent leaves.

The Grevy’s zebra which is smaller than the common zebra and looks more like a horse, the beisa oryx with black horizontal stripe running across its lower flank and the Somali ostrich males which have blue-grey necks and thighs.

We have lunch and then proceed to look for these animals on an afternoon Game Drive. A variety of other animals can also be found. These include lion, elephant, leopard, dik-dik, mongoose, waterbuck, impala, baboon, cheetah and monkey. Avid bird watchers will find the reserve very attractive for bird viewing.

A camel back safari is also a specialty in Samburu as well as a cultural visit to the Samburu people who depend on their cattle, goat, sheep and donkey.

And so the day is spent in alternating pursuits of exploration in the bush and relaxation in our cozy camp/ Lodge.
