Dolphin
Watching & Jozani Forest Tour takes
you to Kizimkazi Fishing Village along the southwest
coast of Zanzibar. Kizimkazi village is located about
50 Kilometers from Stone Town and 20 Kilometers to the
east coast of Zanzibar.
Kizimkazi, which is reputed to once have been the capital
of Zanzibar. A small village consisting of two adjoining
settlements, Kizimkazi Dimbani to the north and Kizimkazi
Mkunguni to the south, it features a small beach where
guests can relax or go diving, swimming or snorkeling.
It is also regularly visited by long-snouted, spinner
and bottlenose dolphins.
Herald
for its friendly schools of dolphin, there is a fair
chance you will get to watch them up close and personal.
The best times for "close encounters" are
during periods of slack water (high or low tide), especially
in the morning at 0700 Hours.
Swimming
alongside the dolphins is best done wearing snorkeling
equipment. The Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins are found
in the coastal shallows throughout the year. During
the daytime they often come close to shore to rest,
feed and socialize.
On
your way back to your hotel, your guide will stop and
visit ZALA Park and Jozani Forest National Park. The
Jozani Forest Reserve is the last sanctuary in the world
for the rare red colobus monkey, which is endemic to
Zanzibar.
The
484-acre reserve, which is the largest area of mature
forest left on Zanzibar, is located 35kms from Stone
Town in the central eastern region of Zanzibar island.
The forest is also home to Syke's monkeys, bush pigs
and nocturnal Zanzibar leopards.
A
series of nature trails lead through various different
types of habitat, which feature over 40 species of birds
including the African pygmy kingfisher, little greenbul,
dark-backed weaver and the Fischer's turaco.
Your
tour will be led by a well-trained guide who can offer
information on the other inhabitants of the forest,
which include; the red-bellied coast squirrel, the endangered
Aders' duiker, the Zanzibar suni, the black-and-white
rufous elephant shrew and the tree hyraxes.
The
forest also offers a board walk, which leads through
the mangrove forests at its southern end, which is an
excellent place to spot the rare mangrove kingfisher.

Dolphin Watching & Jozani Forest
Detailed
Itinerary
This
is Full Day Tour, the main Attraction being able to
swim close to the dolphin, actually its swimming with
the Dolphin. Being very social themselves, if you are
luck you even get to play with them.
Situated on the southern point of the island, Kizimkazi
fishing village is home to several schools of bottle-nosed
dolphins and Humpback dolphins, which are sighted following
a short boat trip from the village.
Kizimkazi
is the dolphin watching centre of Zanzibar. These shallow
coastal waters offer the dolphins a reliable food supply
and they are a good place to nurse calves. About 150
bottlenose and 50 humpback dolphins inhabit this area.
We take our Boats to search for dolphins, and if you’re
lucky, swim with them.
Please
Note that this Tour is subject to Weather Conditions
African
Spice Safaris has its staff at Kizimkazi and if the
weather is not appropriate for the tour we will inform
you on the morning of the Tour and postpone it to the
next day.
Kizimkazi
is also the site of a 12th century mosque, the earliest
evidence of Islam in East Africa, and is thus worth
a visit for both natural and cultural reasons.
The
trip includes transport from either Stone Town or Hotel
in the East or North Coast, guide, boat, snorkeling
equipment and lunch. Also Included is entry fees, transport,
boat hire and lunch.
After
Lunch we visit Jozani Forest, Zanzibar's
first and only National Park is centered on Jozani Forest,
the largest area of mature forest found within Zanzibar.
You
will learn more about Jozani forest Conservation, Jozani
Forest Nature Trail, where you can stroll at your leisure
to visit The Mama Mtondoo - or the Mother Mahogany,
thought to be over 200 years old, or see the two trees
in one - the strangler fig and its partner - the sycamore
fig, or view the raffia fern which boasts the largest
leaf in the world.
Keep
an eye open for some of the 100 species of butterfly
that inhabit the forest some as big as your hand, or
watch out for the small but brightly colored sun birds
that feed on the nectar from the many beautiful tropical
flowers that can be found.
Listen
for the eerie booming and cackles of Syke's monkeys
and the Zanzibar Red Colobus or perhaps you will be
lucky enough to spot the elusive Ader's duiker or even,
the near extinct Zanzibar Leopard.
During
the tour you will also see Jozani Forest Red Colobus
Monkeys, unlike their more widespread and adaptable
cousins, the Black and White Colobus, are a rain forest
species that are now confined to very small areas of
equatorial forest in tropical Africa. It is therefore
a rare treat to be able to see them in Zanzibar and
a sighting of them must be welcomed as a real privilege.
