The
unique appeal of this safari is the exclusive nature
and small size of bush homes, which also means that
occasionally one of them may be fully booked when
you wish to visit.
Should
this be the case, we will either rearrange the itinerary
or recommend another bush home—there are, literally,
scores of exquisite places to choose from! A small
sampling of our favorites can be admired on our accommodations
and Hotel Guide Page.

Your
first night in Kenya is intended to ensure total relaxation...as
well as set the tone for the days ahead.

Day
2: Nairobi — Fly Amboseli National Park
This
morning we wing our way over the scenic Athi Plains
and into the bush country of Amboseli Park. Nestled
in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli is
home to the legendary Masai tribesmen and is world
famous for its tremendous variety of big game.
A
spectacular game run is planned. We stay tonight at
the Tortilis Tented Camp. Rustic style and supreme
comfort are the hallmarks of Tortilis. Kilimanjaro
dominates the view from every direction…animals
are seen browsing in the grasses and drinking at the
waterhole directly outside.
And,
nestled comfortably under huge spreading Acacia Tortilis
trees are the thatch-covered tents. The luxurious
tents are spacious and each has a private veranda
from which to enjoy the view, as well as an en suite
bathroom where hot water abounds.
Of
the fifteen tents, not one sees another; it is as
if you were alone here in this peaceful Eden. Dinner
at Tortilis is exceptionally good—so very fresh
and delightful, with vegetables and herbs grown right
at the camp.
Truly special, you are sure to revel in the experience
of sleeping under canvas and waking to the beauty
of Amboseli.

3 & Day 4 :
Amboseli National
Park
Amboseli
is big game country: elephant, antelope, zebra, wildebeest,
buffalo and giraffe. Two game runs are planned on
both days, all which will introduce you to the intense
beauty and drama that fill each day here.
Predators
stalk the herds of grazing animals, recreating the
age-old drama of life and death under the African
sun, in a setting so lushly beautiful.
We return to Tortilis for a steaming bath, cocktails
and a sumptuous dinner. Very quickly we are ready
for a deep evening slumber in the luxurious tents
that enfold us like silken cocoons.

5 to Day 7 : Amboseli
Fly
to Lewa Downs
It’s
off to the bush by light aircraft, setting a course
to Lewa Downs, the home of our hosts Will and Emma
Craig. The ranch has been the Craig family home since
1922, when Will’s grandparents came from England
to raise cattle. Located in the foothills of Mount
Kenya, it has been described as “a private home,
a private ranch, and a private paradise.”
We
agree. And it’s certainly no exaggeration that
game viewing here is also some of the best in Africa.
With every manner and mode of viewing possible! Via
an open-top vehicle day or night, on foot with a professional
tracker, jogging with a Masai warrior, sitting in
a blind with a thermos of hot coffee and a good book,
or even on horses so compliant that a five-year-old
child could ride effortlessly for hours.
After
which you can tour Lewa’s community weaving
and furniture workshops, tour the organic garden producing
the lodge’s fruits and vegetables, play tennis,
explore the nearby ancient archaeological site, swim
in the pool or simply relax on the terrace with a
pair of binoculars spotting the “Big Five”
from your lounge chair.
The
accommodations here are also divine—British
cozy meets safari chic. Simply stated, Lewa Downs
is an utterly perfect safari experience.

Downs — Fly to Masai Mara Game Reserve
Cottar’s
1920s Camp, Masai Mara “If you want to track
the safari bloodline, you go to Cottar’s,”
states Travel+Leisure. A short flight and yet another
stunning sojourn, now with Calvin and Louise Cottar
as your hosts.
Calvin’s
great grandfather was an American who, inspired by
Teddy Roosevelt’s hunting exploits, moved to
Kenya in 1911 and established Cottar’s Safari
Services. The rest is history—nearly 90 years
of it.
Cottar’s today is the quintessential deluxe
Safari Camp, inspired by the halcyon days of African
travel. And who would know better? Scattered throughout
the camp are Cottar family heirlooms, from the Victrola
to the silver tea service.
Each
guest tent, with its own butler, is a luxurious affair
of white canvas replete with antiques, illuminated
by lanterns, offering private en suite dressing rooms
and bathrooms complete with a freestanding tub!
Cottar’s
fortuitous position in the Mara—located on a
concession of private land bordering the Serengeti—affords
prolific game drives in the shimmering light of early
morning, golden light of late afternoon or by the
sterling light of the moon. All without equal.
