Kidepo
Valley National Park Uganda is
located
in the extreme North of the country bordering with
Sudan and Kenya, Kidepo Valley National Park covers
an area of 1,344 square kilometers.
Due
to its remote location this park is less visited,
but it has the most spectacular scenery of mountains
and vast savannah landscapes. The park is home to
the Karamojong pastoralists.
Animal
species found in the region include; giraffe, ostrich,
elephant, cheetah, leopard, kudu, zebra, buffalo,
amongst others. It is 840 kilometers from Kampala
and although the journey can be tough, taking up to
two days, the diverse landscape past makes the journey
worthwhile.
There
is also a light aircraft airstrip at Akopa. At times
of unrest in Sudan, the north section of the park
is closed.
By Road: Kidepo Valley National Park is about 700
kilometers from Kampala and even if the expedition
can be challenging, use about to two days, the great
landscape past provides a wonderful the expedition
that is worth your expenditure.
There are three routes that can be used by road.
1. Kampala via Mbale – Sironko – Kotido
– Kidepo is about 740 Kilometers
2. Kampala via Karuma – Lira Kotido –
Kidepo is approximately 705 Kilometers
3. Kampala via Mbale – Soroti – Moroto
– Kidepo is approximately 792 Kilometers
A 4 x 4 wheel drive vehicle is the best option for
any of the journeys to Kidepo above

Animals
& Birds of Kidepo Valley National Park
The
park supports a great avifauna. 465 species have been
registered. There are also approximately 80 species
of mammals of which 28 are not seen elsewhere in the
other Ugandan parks.
A
number of the wild game in this park comprise of the
cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), Leopard (Panthera pardus),
Lion (Panthera leo), Bat eared fox (Otocyon megalotis),
Caracal (Felis caracal), Striped Hyena (Hyaena hyena),
Lesser Kudu (Tragelaphus imberbis, Elephant (loxodanta
Africana), Beisa Oryx (Oryx gazelle), Giraffe (Giraffa
camelopardalis), Burch ells Zebra plus a number of
Antelopes.
