Lake Baringo Club Hotel is a small lodge at the borders of Lake Baringo, one of the two fresh water lakes in Kenya's Rift Valley and is the gem for birders and bird photographers.

Lake Baringo Club Hotel is set amidst lush green lawns and bougainvillea and is intimate and cozy. The hotel is located along Nakuru-Kabarnet Raod, Kambi Ya Samaki, Baringo-Kenya.

Birding here is a real pleasure as the birds are very colorful and not at all shy - some even come and feed from your hands. Lake Baringo Club is set in 10 hectares of beautiful grounds, which sweep down to the lakes edge. At night, the hippos come to graze here.

A jetty extends out into the lake, and boat trips can be taken. A long low single story building houses the central lounge, bar and dining room - as simply be pleasantly presented. There is a pretty pool in the gardens with shaded sunbathing areas. Beyond the central buildings, the rooms stretch out in a long line of single storey chalets.

There are no scheduled trips but there are plenty of boats with their captains for hire. Rental is charged per hour; an hour trip being the norm for those who want to see hippo at close quarters, crocodile and the abundant lake birds.

Keen bird watchers might wish to take a boat for two hours or more; they won't have far to go though as the shores of the lake are alive with feathered activity.

There are two hot springs in the area. A visit to the hot springs on a close by island takes two hours with plenty of bird, crocodile and hippo watching en route. Another colorful sight en route is one of Njemps fishermen off-loading nets full of tilapia, catfish, mudfish and bass while the village women and children sort them into size.

Lake Baringo Club Hotel Cultural Tours

Lake Baringo Club Hotel offers tours to Pokot, Tugen and Njemps villages close to Lake Baringo; the Njemps are cousins of the Masai and live one the Ol Kokwe Parmalok Islands and around the lakeshores, mainly practicing pastrolism and fishing.

You will usually be able to walk around freely and take photos but you will probably be hassled to buy handicrafts.

Lake Baringo

Lake Baringo is a peaceful and beautiful freshwater lake covering about 168 sq km at an altitude of 1000 meters. It is a shallow lake (maximum depth is 12 meters) and, like Lake Naivasha, appears to have no outlet. The lake features small wooded creeks, little islands and white pebble beach's and is framed by mountains to the east and west.

The Njemps fishermen can be seen on the lake, to which the Laikipia Escarpment creates a magnificent backdrop. The lake contains large schools of hippo and crocodile. There are several islands, Ol Kokwe being the largest.

The lake's greatest attraction is the variety of birds of which there are said to be 450 species. Mammals include Grant's gazelle, waterbuck, mongoose and dik dik.
