south of Lamu Town. It is possible to fly to Lamu from
Nairobi (both Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and
Wilson Airport), Mombasa, and Malindi to Palm House

is a Swahili style house located in the village of Shela
on Lamu Island and accommodates nine to ten (9 to 10)
guests and is designed around an open courtyard with
a tall central Pemba Island palm tree.

another small tropical side garden with a royal palm
and white thunbergia.

is spacious, yet compact with two doubles and one triple
bedroom on the first floor, all ensuite with private
balconies. The second floor with an open terrace and
three sun beds, leads to a small covered baraza area
in front of the fourth bedroom. This master bedroom
has a Lamu four-poster bed and balconies on two sides.
Like
all the Shela houses, there is a panoramic view from
the covered rooftop, with a bar, sun beds and baraza

a five minute walk away from Shela beach.

10 minutes from Lamu Town
Palm
House Lamu has three staff: the resident manager will
help to ensure you have everything you need, assist
you with menus and also help organize local excursions.
Even if you opt for the self-catering option, you don’t
have to cook!
You just buy your food
in the local market and the house cook will conjure
up an excellent meal for you. He will bake bread, suggest
menus and cook excellent international cuisine and Swahili
fish dishes. Basic foodstuffs, fresh seasonal vegetables
and fruit are available in the local Lamu market, while
other supplies are flown down from Nairobi.
Fish, lobster, crab
and fresh oysters will be sold by the local fishermen
at your door or can be ordered. Although beer and sodas
can be bought locally, Fleewinter recommends that you
take your own wine or spirits. There is a good supply
of fresh water from the house well for showers.

purifying plant which supplies clean water to all the
kitchens and carafes are supplied in the bathrooms.
Commercial bottled water is also available.
Bed linen, mosquito
nets and house towels are supplied. A full laundry service
is provided but there are no dry cleaning services available.
There is a CD player in the house so take along your
music!
There
is no phone in Palm House Lamu, allowing you to spend
time away from the pressures of the office and the outside
world. However if you want to 'stay connected' several
local mobile phone companies provide services and and
you can also obtain local sim cards.

Step from the house to wander through the tangle of
narrow sandy lanes, tall stone houses, mosques, and
market stalls that make up Shela, a sleepy village whose
inhabitants include gentle donkeys, weathered fishermen,
the occasional beach boy and a handful of visitors.

House Lamu cook will do all your catering. He will bake
bread, suggest menus and cook excellent Swahili fish

you choose this option, the cook will still do all your
shopping and keep a record of your expenditure for every
meal he prepares for you. Please bring luxury food items
and condiments with you.
Fresh
dairy products, meat and chicken are difficult to find
in Lamu. Shela houses have a small supply of goods not
available on the island for sale in our store.

House Lamu kitchen is well equipped with gas cooker,
fridge, deep-freeze, bottle cooler, ice maker, ice-cream
machine and liquidizer. Sodas and beer can be bought
locally, Wine is locally available or we can help with
an order from a Nairobi wine supplier. Spirits should
be brought along with you.
Climate
in Lamu
The weather in Lamu is hot and sunny
from mid-July through to mid-April, with the hottest
months between November and April. However, there is
usually a good breeze all year round. May and June are
the monsoon months, but they also have periods of good
weather mixed with wild storms.
Boating

Dhows, speedboats, ski boats and deep
sea fishing boats can be hired for short and long trips.
Scuba diving is available between November and March.
A daily ferry service into Lamu town leaves at 9am and
returns at 12pm.
