Mount Kenya Day Trip Hike Chogoria Route: Our Mount Kenya day trip using the Chogoria Route approaches the mountain on the eastern side while Naro Moru route is on the west side and Sirimon route is on the north side of the mountain.

Out of the three popular routes for climbing mount Kenya mentioned above, Chogoria Route is without doubt the most scenic and rewarding for hikers interested in seeing beautiful landscapes and the exotic flora on Mount Kenya.

Chogoria route contains luxurious vegetation and combined with the fact that the final eruption of Mount Kenya occurred on this side of the mountain makes it one of the most scenic parts of the entire area.

Our day hiking tour begins from Nairobi where you are driven to Chogoria town located in Mwimbi Division of Tharaka Nithi County in Kenya.

The town is about 225 km's away from Nairobi. After a restroom stop proceed by road up to the Chogoria park entrance gate.

The hiking begins from the gate to Mugi Hill, Lake Ellis and the Gates (Road Head) to experience the magnificent sceneries on the Eastern side of the mountain.

After that we descend to the park entrance for pick up and a transfer back to Nairobi.

Mount Kenya Day Trip Hike Chogoria Route Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Drive to Chogoria Town – Proceed to Chogoria Park entrance gate
0600 Hours: Depart Nairobi after an early breakfast at your hotel/ residence driving past several towns like Ruiru, Thika, Embu and Chuka to get to Chogoria town.

After a restroom stop proceed by road up to the Chogoria park entrance gate. This drive is 29 km's on a dirt road passing through fertile farmlands before getting into a tropical forest, followed by a bamboo zone to the park gate at 2950 meters.

1100 Hours: After completing the park formalities, you begin the hike (6 km's) further up the road to 3300 meters.

Since it only takes 2 hours to get to the Nithi River you explore the surroundings which include the Nithi falls approximately 100 feet high.

Other attractions are Lake Ellis at 3500 meters and Mugi Hill which is located right next to Lake Ellis.

A climb to the top offers a bird’s eye view of the neighboring flat topped Giants Billiard table – a mountain peak near Meru, Eastern, Kenya. It is considered as the 24th highest mountain in Kenya.

1300 Hours: As you explore the surrounding and attractions of the area you stop to enjoy lunch at a cool picnic site.

1500 Hours: We trace our steps back to the park gate where we find our safari vehicle waiting for us and transfer back to Nairobi.

1900 Hours: On or about this time we arrive in Nairobi and transfer you to your hotel/ residence.

Mount Kenya Day Trip Hike Sirimon Route: Our one day Mount Kenya climbing/ trekking day tour from Nairobi using the Sirimon route offers the gentlest slope of all approach routes and is therefore perfect for beginners.

The Sirimon route is popular for its unique forest and the opportunity for viewing wildlife. There are 2 distinctive Sirimon routes that one can choose to take during our one day-trip hike up the mountain.

You could choose either the Sirimon lower forest one day trip or the Sirimon Moorland one day trip.

Sirimon lower forest one day trip begins from Nanyuki town where we drive to the Park entrance gate, and begin the hike through the Gallery forest up to Old Moses Camp at an altitude of 3000 meters.

This is a favorite spot for ornithologists and offers an opportunity to see the Grevy Zebras in the forest.

Sirimon Moorland one day trip begins from Nanyuki town where we drive to the Park entrance gate, complete park entry formalities and then continue driving to Old Moses Camp. From here the hike starts through the barrow towards Liki North Valley.

Here the Moorland offers a gentle climb through fascinating vegetation with a chance of seeing the peaks.

Mount Kenya Day Trip Hike Sirimon Route Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Drive to Nanyuki Town – Proceed to Mount Kenya Park Entrance Gate
0700 Hours: We depart from Nairobi after an early breakfast at your hotel/ residence and drive to Nanyuki town the capital of Laikipia County. Presently Nanyuki is a base for the Kenya Air Force and a training area for the British Army.

Nanyuki continues to be an important town for Mount Kenya climbers, supply centre for farms and is close to ranches, game parks conservancies in the region.

From Nanyuki Town (1980 meters) we drive toward the Mount Kenya to the Sirimon gate at 2650 meters. The distance between Nanyuki and Sirimon Gate is 23 km’s.

1030 Hours: On completion of park entry formalities at the Sirimon Gate, you begin a 3½ hour (9 km’s) hike through forest, bamboo, rosewood and heather zones to Old Moses camp (also called Judmeier Camp) at 3300 meters.

We gain 740 meters on the ascent and begin to truly acclimatize. The forest and bamboo are home to hundreds of buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks and a plethora of bird species.

1330 Hours: We hike a little higher about 1 km from Old Moses camp to 3600 meters to see 2 Mount Kenya peaks – Nelion and Batian next to each other. These peaks are climbed only by professional alpinists.

1400 Hours: After taking pictures we descend down from 3600 meters to Old Moses camp at 3300 meters for our picnic lunch.

1500 Hours: After lunch we descend down for 9 km’s (1.5 hours) to Sirimon gate where you get your driver guide and transfer back to Nairobi.

1900 Hours: We arrive back to Nairobi, transfer you to your hotel/ residence.

Day 1: Nairobi – Fly to Amboseli National Park 
0630: This morning after breakfast at your hotel/ residence in Nairobi we transfer to Wilson Airport for our scheduled flight to Amboseli National Park.

0730 Hours: Fly to Amboseli Airstrip located inside Amboseli National Park.

0805 Hours: Upon landing, you will be met by our professional safari driver guide and proceed for a morning game drive looking out for elephant, buffalo, impala, lion, cheetah, hyena, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest among other African animals.

There is also a host of birds, both large and small, to see if you keep your eyes open and stop at every sighting.

1230 Hours: We arrive at our lodge/ camp for lunch. Later we settle in relax and explore camp/ lodge.

1500 Hours: We enjoy a cup of tea/coffee or hot chocolate with some home made biscuits/ cake as we get ready for the afternoon game drive.

1530 Hours: Embark on the afternoon game-drive.  Amboseli National Park is known for its large herd of over 900 free-ranging elephants.

Enjoy the views of Mount Kilimanjaro, visit the observation Hill, which overlooks the park, swamps and, of course, the herds of free-roaming elephants.

Later we meet the Masai people and learn about the Masai culture and their indigenous lifestyle.

1830 Hours: Return to the camp/ lodge for dinner and overnight.

Karen Blixen Coffee Garden Cottages Nairobi is located close to the famous Karen Blixen Museum in Karen, a beautiful, peaceful suburb approximately 20 miles from downtown Nairobi.

Lake Chala Day Trip Arusha Excursion is a Tanzania day trip that starts from Arusha, Moshi or Marangu town.

This full day tour takes you to Lake Chala, which lies on the South Eastern flank of Mount Kilimanjaro just 55 km's from Moshi near the Holili/ Taveta border post to Kenya and Tanzania.

The lake is located 55 kms from Moshi (130 kms from Arusha) therefore the perfect get away for a day. Pure tranquility and beautiful nature await you at Lake Chala.

Explore the area on one of the many possible hikes, walks to the lake, canoeing on the lake, bird watching, swim in the crystal clear water, kayaking across borders or simply enjoy the stunning vistas of an untouched Africa.

Depending on the time of year, there are hundreds of species of butterflies and birds, including spectacular birds of prey.

The African Fish Eagle, with its haunting techniques, Verreaux’s Eagle, Augur Buzzards and many other species of birds can be seen around the crater walls.

Wild animals spotted with-in the area include the blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, baboons, dik-dik, kudu and elephant.

At the end of Lake Chala day trip, you can choose to be dropped off at Kilimanjaro International Airport, at Arusha Airport or at your hotel.

Lake Chala Day Trip Arusha Excursion | What to Do and See

Hiking: Lake Chala is a wonderful area in which to hike.  You can walk down to the lake, round the rim of the lake and up Chala Hill.  You can take river walks, out in the bush, with the company of a guide. 

The River Bed Trail following the wonderfully carved and varied ‘dry’ river bed then back up the Camp hill to the Kenyan border, and down along the edge of crater lake.

Great views can also be had on this walk across the bush to the foothills of Kilimanjaro and of the mighty mountain itself. 

Birding Watching: Birds are plentiful and raptors in particular are many and spectacular birds found in the area. 

Lake Chala is thought to be an important migration corridor on the eastern flank of Kilimanjaro and unexpected birds can be found here during migration time. 

Fishing: The Lake is home to the Lake Chala Tilapia, a species of fish in the cichlidae family. This fish is endemic to Chala, but is now a threatened species due to over fishing.

Crocodiles: Crocodiles were introduced to Lake Chala in the 1930's. In the early 1990s fishermen, angry that their nets were continually being destroyed, began a program to eradicate them.

There are no longer any crocodiles left in Lake Chala and the lake is safe for swimming; however as everywhere in Africa it pays to be careful. 

Nature Walks: From lush lake shore forest, to stunning volcanic savannah, Chala is immensely rich in flora.  A vast array of  trees, shrubs, flowers and grasses,  including rare plants, some endemic to Chala, adorn the landscape. 

The variety is astounding and beautiful in this harsh environment.

Lake Chala Day Trip Arusha Excursion Itinerary

0800 Hours: After breakfast at your hotel/ residence in the morning your safari guide will pick you up and drive to Lake Chala.

Lake Chala is located some (3 hours drive from Arusha) 55 km's northeast of Moshi town on the south-eastern flank of Mt Kilimanjaro and on the Kenyan border. In fact, the international boundary between Tanzania and Kenya runs through the middle of the lake!

If you start from Moshi the drive is about 2.5 hours.

1000 Hours: Upon arrival you will see the beautiful private game reserve overlooking the Crater Lake.  The local guide will take you down to the lake.

Spend the morning bird watching, swimming, fishing, exploring, canoeing, kayaking (optional). You will have the opportunity to meet/see the local people doing their daily activity.

The area is home to monitor lizards, baboons, monkeys, antelopes, elephants and many species of birds that live in this wonderful savannah land.

1300 Hours: We enjoy our picnic lunch out in the bush or at the lodge's restaurant/bar depending on the activity you choose for the day.

1400 Hours: Relax at the lodge or partake one of the many possible hikes, walks to the lake, canoeing on the lake, bird watching, swim in the crystal clear water, kayaking across borders or simply enjoy the stunning vistas of an untouched Africa.

1600 Hours: You will then be driven back to Moshi/ Arusha in the late afternoon.

1900 Hours: Arrive back in Arusha and transfer to you hotel/ residence.

Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro 1 Day Shira Route is best suited for guests who are staying in hotels, lodges and camps located West Kilimanjaro.

Some of these lodges include Shumata Camp, Ndarakwai Camp, Kambi ya Tembo and House of West Kili Lodge.

The Shira route is a path that approaches Kilimanjaro from the west and guests staying at lodges/ camps/ hotels West of Kilimanjaro gives them an opportunity to hike Mt. Kilimanjaro in a single day trip in the Shira Plateau.

Shira Plateau is tact of moorland roughly 5 miles across in each direction; level on the west where it abuts on the Shira Ridge, titled upwards on the east where it gradually steepening slope merge into those of Kibo which can be seen at a very close range on a clear day.

It lies in general between the 11,500 and 13,500 feet. Ascending to this height one encounters the rich vegetation and tree dancing colobus monkeys.

There are carcasses of eland and elephant higher on the mountain proving that these larger animals are occasional visitors.

Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro 1 Day Shira Route Itinerary

The day starts early from your lodge then an hour’s drive through the rich agricultural area at the base of the mountain, this varies from hand tilled small holdings to large commercial farms before giving way first to plantation forest and finally to indigenous forest.

After the paperwork at the Londorosi gate (Kilimanjaro National Park Western Gate), the road climbs more steeply up a rough track moving quickly through the different layers of vegetation from thick mountain forest with towering trees gradually giving way to the giant heath.

These giants initially tower 10 to 15 feet high but as we get higher they become gradually shorter, when we crest the final rise on the plateau they are only a few feet high.

From the parking area at the edge of the plateau we can strike out in any direction, following the myriad of small animal tracks to meander our way across the plateau.

Spend the day trekking in the park-approximately 3 hours or more. The guide will carry trail food and a picnic lunch.
