1 Day Prehistoric Sites Tour Kariandusi Hyrax Hill is a guided day tour from Nairobi to 2 archaeological sites in Kenya namely; Kariandusi prehistoric site and the Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site and Museum.

Kariandusi Prehistoric site located about 2 km’s east side of Lake Elementaita while the Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site and Museum is atop a hill about 4 km's from Nakuru Town, overlooking Lake Nakuru.

Kariandusi Prehistoric site was unearthed by Louis Leakey in the 1920’s and has been a rich source of prehistoric obsidian tools, made by early humans between 1.4 million and 200,000 years ago.

Most of the tools found at Kariandusi are cutting implements which seem to have been used for butchering meat.

Hyrax Hill Prehistoric site was also unearthed by Louis Leakey in the 1920’s and ever since has been a rich source of Neolithic fossils, tools, and Iron Age artifacts.

0700 Hours: Our thrilling and exciting Pre-Historic sites day trip departs Nairobi after an early breakfast at your hotel/ residence.

The drive takes us through scenic farm lands, bustling small towns and to the expansive Great Rift Valley.

Along the way you make a brief stop at the Mt. Longonot view point where one can take photos and posed for a while to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Rift Valley. 

Among the striking features visible from the viewpoint include Mt. Longonot (a dormant volcano) and Mt Suswa.

1000 Hours: Our first Kenya Archaeological site – Kariandusi Prehistoric site which is an African Stone Age Site dating close to one million years!

This site was discovered by the legendary Kenyan Paleoanthropologist and archaeologist Louis Leakey in a 1928 during the expedition of the Kariandusi River Bed.

Our guided tour includes a museum curator who gives detailed information on both prehistory and the history of Kariandusi Archaeological site, and Kariandusi Museum.

Other attractions at the site include a Nature trail, caves and a monumental church building. The area is also popularly known for the mining of diatomite used for filtering soft drinks and toothpaste manufacture.

1200 Hours: After an informative and exciting tour of Kariandusi Prehistoric site, we proceed to Nakuru and stop for lunch then continue to the Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site and Museum discovered by Louise and Mary Leakey.

Hyrax Hill Museum depicts the lifestyle of seasonal settlement by prehistoric people at least 3,000 years old. The Museum is a former farmhouse ceded to the monument in 1965, by the Late Mr. A. Selfe.

A small museum was opened here where artifacts from the Hyrax Hill site and other sites in the Central Rift Valley are displayed.

Numerous sites around the hill belong to different time periods with the earliest finds dating back to the Neolithic period.

The site gets its name from the hyraxes which used to be found in abundance living in the rock cracks found in this area.

Our guided tour of this Kenya Archaeological site will highlight the following areas: Hyrax Hill Museum, Neolithic Site, Sirikwa hollows and the Tortoise pit.

1500 Hours: Later we depart by road back to Nairobi.

Nairobi Hiking Tour 2 Hour Walk Karura Forest is a half day excursion to Karura Forest Reserve – an urban upland forest located about 5 km's on the outskirts of Nairobi central business district, the capital of Kenya.

This 564 hectare forest is surrounded by the northern up-market suburbs of Muthaiga, Runda and Gigiri, with Kiambu Road on one side and Limuru Road on the other.

Karura Forest hiking tour begins from the Forest Station on Kiambu Road and the walk to Karura Caves and Waterfalls is about 4 km long. This family trail was opened to the public in early 2009 through the collaborative efforts of the Kenya Forest Service and Friends of Karura.

After walking on motor vehicle dirt roads from the Forest Gate for a couple of kilometers, you’ll encounter a sign pointing to a trail on the right that leads to the Caves.

The trail drops sharply until it reaches Karura River, before leveling off to follow the course of the river. A few meters on, you’ll come upon the Karura Caves. These caves were considered sacred by the local community, with a long history of usage as a place for religious worship.

They are also reputed to have been a hideout for the Mau Mau during the fight for independence from the British colonial government.

A kilometer further down the trail is the spectacular 50ft Karura Waterfalls, with water cascading over three shelves before settling to a gentle flow down the river.

Besides the two attractions above, Karura Forest has over 50 km of nature trails, a bamboo forest, and a marshland filled with a wide range of birdlife.

They provide the perfect backdrop for nature lovers. An old chimney incinerator that was used in the past by Central Bank of Kenya for destroying decommissioned currency notes still stands today in the forest.

Karen Blixen Museum Finch Hattons Memorial grave day tour to Karen Blixen House Museum located in Karen and the memorial grave yard of Finch hattons in the outskirts of Nairobi at the foot of the Ngong Hills. combines a visit

Denys George Finch Hatton (born on 24th April 1887 – Died on the 14th May 1931) was an aristocratic big-game hunter and the lover of Baroness Karen Blixen (also known by her pen name as Isak Dinesen).

Karen Blixen wrote about him in her autobiographical book Out of Africa, first published in 1937. In the book, his name is hyphenated: "Finch-Hatton".

Our tour begins with a visit to Karen Blixen’s house which has been wonderfully preserved with some beautiful antiques, a wide veranda, old outdoor kitchen with original utensils and then a rolling lawn with a view of the Ngong hills.

Karen Blixen Museum history dates back to 1914, during the First World War, with the arrival of Karen Blixen from Denmark. At the foot of Ngong hills, Karen Blixen established herself as a farmer. After her departure in 1931 the suburbs retained the commemorative home of Karen

Once you have finished your visit in the museum you will be driven up to the Ngong Hills to Denis Finch Hatton’s grave – a memorial to Karen Blixen’s lover. It is located inside a Kikuyu garden.

Later we return back to the city and drop you off at your residence.

0800 Hours: Depart from your hotel and drive south to the leafy suburb of Karen (Named after Karen Blixen). To have a context for the day and Karen’s life we visit her house and farm (which is now a museum) from where she wrote her book out of Africa.

From here we continue south around 20 kilometers to the Ngong Hills. Views of these hills were loved by Karen and her now the burial grounds for Karen’s lover Denys Finch Hatton. After a walk across the hills and a picnic lunch we return to Nairobi.

1600 Hours: We are back at hotel/ residence.

A very famous Dane, Karen was born in Denmark in 1885. She achieved international fame from writing her life story which was published and then made into the movie Out Of Africa.

She came to African after an arranged marriage to her cousin Baron Von Blixen, She bought Bogani House which included 6000 acres and started a coffee farm – although she wasn’t very successful for a number of reasons, like bad soil, locust plague, drought and finally a factory fire.

So she ended up bankrupt and had to auction all her belongings, including the house to pay her dept. After the sale of the house in 1931 she left Africa bound for Denmark where she died in 1962.

The museum was bought in 1959 by the Danish government and was given as a present to Kenya on independence day in 1963. Karen was a great painter and a writer and loved hunting.

At her home, which is now a museum you can see old photographs plus some of the original furniture, paintings and books she wrote.

From Karen Blixen’s house there were great views to the Ngong hills. From this small range of four peaks there are breathtaking views of Nairobi city and across the vast plains of the great Rift valley.

The word “Ngong” means knuckles – and from a distance the hills ridges do resemble knuckles of a hand. Legend has it that a giant God stumbled while digging the rift valley and the imprint of his fist left the ridge’s four peaks.

The hills extend around 15 km’s north to South and have an average of around 2350 meters; There is a mixture of woodland, farmland, thick grasses and wild flowers.  

You are unlikely to come across large game while trekking although you may see antelopes, zebra, giraffe, bushbuck and buffalo. There are a large variety of birds species resident to the hill.

And depending on your route and interest you will make a stop and pay your respect at Denys Finch Hatton final resting place.
