4 Days 3 Nights Parc National Des Volcans Gorilla Safari is a short three-night stay in northern Rwanda and offers you the opportunity to engage with the endangered mountain gorillas in the forests on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes.
This safari begins and ends in Kigali. Parc National des Volcans in the Virunga volcanoes is home to the Mountain Gorillas to which Dian Fossey dedicated her life.
Seeing some of the last remaining 700 mountain gorillas in the world is a fantastic experience and this safari takes you to Parc National des Volcans (PNV) in Rwanda. It offers an opportunity to track gorillas twice.
There are 4 groups of Mountain Gorillas located in the Rwandan sector of the Virunga Volcanoes. They are the Susa Group, Sabinyo Group, Group Thirteen, and Amahoro Group.
Trekking times to reach each group vary from 2 to 7 hours depending upon their movements. Most days there are several groups within two-hour treks of the car park.
During the wet season trekking times are reduced to as little as 20 minutes as the gorillas move to lower elevations to feed.
Parc National Des Volcans in Rwanda has seven habituated gorilla families and tracking most groups in the afro-montane forest usually takes only a few hours.
You can also climb a volcano, visit the remains of Dian Fossey's grave or visit the endangered golden monkey.

* There is a minimum age of 15 years on gorilla treks
* In order to protect the gorillas the Rwandan government issues Gorilla Permits – ensuring that a limited number of tourists can track them each day. These permits are in high demand, so do book early to secure your chosen date/s.
* Tracking gorillas in Rwanda can be testing and requires a moderate to good level of fitness (though it is deemed easier than from Uganda where the trails are steeper and less accessible)
* Treks are often 2 to 3 hours each way (but can be more) and involve hiking through dense forest and traversing steep ravines and mountainsides, often in damp conditions. However, all this adventure is worthwhile for a glimpse of one of nature’s finest spectacles

Day 1: Kigali – Drive to Parc National des Volcans
Morning pick up from Kigali Airport. Visit the Genocide Memorial Center (optional). Lunch in town. Follow the road as it climbs to the base of the majestic volcanoes, with spectacular views across the five peaks.

Day 2 : Explore Parc National des Volcans Gorilla Tracking
An early breakfast, served at the lodge, before departing by road to the Parc National des Volcans headquarters. Here you will be allocated a guide for one of the habituated Mountain Gorilla families and given a safety briefing.
You will then be taken by vehicle to a starting point, to commence your gorilla trek in the forest. The amount of time spent walking is dependent upon which family of Gorillas you are allocated to and where they are to be found on that day.
Once the family is sighted you will spend a maximum of one hour with the Gorilla family. After this phenomenal wildlife experience, return to your vehicle on the edge of the forest, returning the lodge for lunch.

Day 3: Discover Parc National des Volcans
Early morning breakfast prior to departing for your second gorilla trek, with the possibility of visiting a different Gorilla family. Return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, relax or take a drive to the bustling market town of Ruhengeri, nearby, or visit the beautiful lakes of Kivu, Burera, Ruhondo and Karago.
There are also the genocide memorials and community and conservation projects, to be visited. Return to Virunga Safari Lodge for dinner and overnight.
There are many optional activities available on this day. Some include: visit Dian Fossey’s grave, community and nature walks, visit a local school etc.

Day 4: Parc National des Volcans (Ruhengeri) – Drive to Kigali
This morning you will bid farewell to our lodge staff and depart for Kigali. If time permits, you can go for a tour of the city including a visit to the market, pottery project, handicraft shops, the Franco-Rwandan cultural centre and the genocide memorial.
You will be transferred to the airport in time to check in for your onward journey.

What to Wear & Take On Your Gorilla Trek
|
With changeable weather conditions and dense forest vegetation it is advisable to take layers of protective clothing.
We recommend wearing the following:
– T-shirt
– Hat with brim
– Thick trousers
– Long-sleeved top
– Warm fleece/ jumper
– Thick wool socks (and gaiters preferably)
– Garden gloves to aid scrambling up banks
– Strong lightweight, water-proof walking boots
Carry a Small Rucksack with:
– Water
– Binoculars
– Pack lunch and snacks
– Light-weight rain Mac / poncho
– Camera / video camera with spare battery, memory cards or film
– Walking sticks are available at the Park headquarters and porters can be hired
– A sealed plastic bag around camera/ lenses will help keep them dry on the trek
– Pockets are useful for valuables/ spare camera batteries/ lenses etc. All other equipment are left with the porter’s (200 meters away from the gorilla groups)
