This morning we travel by road to Kenya’s northern frontier. Wild and rugged, Samburu is fiercely beautiful with its arid savannahs watered by the lovely Uaso Nyiro River.

It is also one of Kenya’s most protected areas and home to species only found north of the equator, from the reticulated giraffe to Grevy’s zebras and Beisa oryxes.

We also enjoy Larsens Tented Camp or Samburu Intrepids Camp, our luxurious hostelry set beneath a canopy of acacia trees along the banks of the river.

Before the dew is off the grass, we’re off in pursuit of the elephants, lions, leopards, and cheetahs that thrive in the reserve’s grasslands and acacia woodlands. And so the day is spent in alternating pursuits of exploration in the bush and relaxation in our cozy camp.

Lake Nakuru is still worth a visit as it has many other notable park residents – including lion, leopard, black rhino and white rhino, Waterbuck, Reed buck, Buffalo, Baboon and many species of plains game.

Nakuru has become one of the most successful sanctuaries in East Africa for rhino and now houses healthy populations of both. Similarly, the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe from the Soy Plains of Eldoret was introduced in 1974 and it too has bred successfully.

There are also quite a few pythons which can be spotted sometimes disconcertingly dangling from trees or crossing roads.

The bird life is spectacular with hundreds of bird species and a large variety of water birds including big numbers of pelicans which have been attracted by the increased water levels.

It is in the Mara that the most spectacular event of the natural wonders of the world takes place. This is the annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti (Tanzania) in search of water and pasture.

Behind their heels are predators of the savanna – Lion, Cheetah, and Wild dog, Jackal, Hyena and Vultures. Depart for an afternoon ‘Spice’ game drive until dusk.

With diligence and some luck, you may encounter a family of Cheetahs, or a herd of Elephants crossing the path in front of you. 6 Days 5 Nights Kenya Lodge Safari Wildlife Holiday begins the adventure in the lovely Mount Kenya Safari Club on the slopes of majestic Mount Kenya.

This private club is justly famous for its refinement and glamorous Hollywood history, considered one of the safari “musts” of East Africa.

Fine dining, exquisitely manicured grounds and gracious hospitality are hallmarks of a stay at the club.

Ol Pejeta Sweetwaters Conservancy is 70,000-acre private ranch with magnificent views across the plains to the snow capped peaks of Mount Kenya.

This game sanctuary is the closest reserve to Mt. Kenya Safari Club home to all the big five game, and has the highest ratio of game-to-area of any park or reserve in Kenya.

Sweetwaters Serena Tented Camp has a very popular waterhole that is floodlit by night, providing excellent and secluded rarely seen game viewing.

Lake Nakuru National Park is dominated by a gentle undulating terrain with open bush and woodlands, typical of the dry rift valley vegetation.

Twenty seven percent (27%) of the park is composed of the Lake Nakuru waters. The park was declared a rhino sanctuary in 1983.

The Rhino stocking programme which ensued received white rhinos from South Africa. Currently the sanctuary has approximately 45 black and 31 white rhinoceros.

The Masai Mara is Kenya's finest and most outstanding wildlife sanctuary where gentle rolling grassland ensures animals are never out of sight.

The climate is gentle, rarely too hot and well spread rainfall year round. The sensation of the great wildebeest migration between July and October is unparalleled.

The wildlife is far from being confined within the Reserve boundaries and an even larger area extends beyond the game Reserve.

Centuries of close association with the wildlife has resulted in an almost symbiotic relationship where wildlife and Masai people live in peace with one another.

6 Days 5 Nights Kenya Road Wildlife Holiday Safari begins with a visit to Samburu National Reserve – a not very well-known, but definitely worth a visit.

Samburu National Reserve is situated on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in Kenya.

This means plenty of water, trees and shade to attract wildlife like elephant, lion, giraffe and zebra from the surrounding savannah plains. Leopards are also regularly spotted.

The reserve is not particularly well-known and is therefore not too crowded – a huge plus in Kenya where so many reserves are often overflowing with tourists.

It is often grouped together with the Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves as they lie so close together.

Our next stop is the Aberdare National Park – created in 1950 to protect the forested slopes and moors of the Aberdare Mountains.

The park has elephant, lion, rhino, black leopard and the beautiful but elusive bongo antelope. Both Treetops and The Ark are built above the ground beside floodlit waterholes with salt licks.

Visitors must book in advance and cannot make their own way to the lodges in private vehicles.

Instead check-in is at the Aberdare Country club for The Ark and the Outspan Hotel for Treetops, from where guests are bussed to their respective lodges.

Treetops is one of Kenya's most famous hotels – this is where British Princess Elizabeth was informed that she had become Queen in 1952 on news of her father's death.

Our African Spice Safaris 6 Days/ 5 Nights safari grand finale is the with Amboseli National Park – an excellent place to view a multitude of wildlife, including everything from Lions, Cheetah to Wildebeest to Giraffes to Baboons.

Optional visit to a Masai village is available as this is the home of the Masai people. Here you learn about their tribal social systems, customs and the place of the Masai in today’s Africa.

The residents live in their Manyatta, or village, much as they have for centuries and a visit gives you the opportunity to see the interior of these mud-hut homes.

The homes are spotless and unadorned, contrasted with the Masai themselves, bedecked with brilliantly colored beads and cloths.
