When is the Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro?

The best time to climb Kilimanjaro is the warmest and driest months. January, February and September are considered to be the best months in terms of weather, and are the busiest months.

From January through mid-March are the warmest months, with clear skies in the mornings and evenings. During the day, clouds may appear along with brief showers.

From the end of March to early June is the long rainy season. Visibility may be low due to heavy clouds, but the crowds are gone. June, July, and August are good months, but it is colder.

Following September and October, the short rainy season lasts from November through the beginning of December, where afternoon rains are common, but skies are clear in mornings and evenings.

How long does it take to Climb Kilimanjaro?

Mount Kilimanjaro routes and their variations take between five to nine days to complete. Although Mount Kilimanjaro is known as a "walk-up" mountain, you should not underestimate it and its risks.

The overall statistics show that less than half of all climbers reach the summit.

The greater the number of days on the mountain, the better your chances of reaching the top. Therefore the key to a safe, successful climb is to take the longest routes possible.

There are minimum days for each Kilimanjaro main climbing routes. However, that is not to be confused with recommended days for the route.

We recommend adding an extra day or two to your trip to help you acclimatize to the altitude. We encourage customers to take 7-9 day routes for the best chance of success and the lowest risk of altitude sickness.

Which Route to Use When Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro?

There are 7 established routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro – Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai, Northern Circuit and Umbwe.

The Marangu, Machame, and Umbwe routes all approach from the south of the mountain (Mweka is used only for descent). The Lemosho, Shira and Northern Circuit routes approach from the west.

The Rongai route approaches from the north. It is estimated that tourists climb Kilimanjaro using the routes in the following percentages:
    Kilimanjaro Shira Route (1%)
    Kilimanjaro Rongai Route (5%)
    Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route (0%)
    Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route (8%)
    Kilimanjaro Marangu Route (40%)
    Kilimanjaro Machame Route (45%)
    Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route (0%)

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro Guides & Porters

We provide the best local guides, all of whom are fluent in English and have received extensive training in First Aid, Mountain Rescue, Flora and Fauna and History.

All of our guides are registered with Kilimanjaro National Park. It is forbidden to climb Kilimanjaro without a guide.

You can expect the following from our Kilimanjaro guides: High Safety Standards, Professionalism with fun, Expert Ability teaching on High

Altitude Trekking, Mountain Knowledge – information about Geology, Flora and Fauna of the mountain

Our guides have support teams of assistant guides, cooks and porters. Porters carry the tents, sleeping bags, mattresses, food, water, cookware, gas, stoves, medical supplies, chairs, tables and your camping gear.

What is the Weather like When Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro?

Temperatures when Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro range from hot to very cold. At the beginning of the climb, at the base of the mountain, the average temperature is around 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 27 degrees Celsius).

From there, the temperatures will decrease as you move through Mount Kilimanjaro ecological zones.

At the summit, Uhuru Point, the night time temperatures can range between 20 and -20 degrees Fahrenheit (-7 to -29 degrees Celsius). Due to Mount Kilimanjaro great height, the mountain creates its own weather.

It is extremely variable and impossible to predict. Therefore, regardless of when you climb, you should always be prepared for wet days and cold nights.

January, February and March are the warmest months, April and May are the wettest months, June and July are the coolest months, August and September are the driest months.

What Gear Do I Need to Carry in my Day Pack?

You are only required to carry items for your day-pack: waterproof gear, extra clothing, water, snacks, gloves, hat, sunglasses, and other small items, such as bug repellent and sun screen.

Consult your guide if you are unsure of what you need.

Everything else should be placed into your duffel bag, which the porters will carry. The weight limit of the duffel bag is 15 kilos. The porters will carry the duffel bag from campsite to campsite.

Use plastic bags or dry bags to separate and water proof your gear.

You will be expected to pack your day-pack and duffel bag each morning. Note that it is acceptable to use a backpack instead of a duffel bag.

However, since porters bundle the bag with other items and carry the load on their heads, a duffel bag is preferred.

Where Will I Sleep? Accommodation When Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

Whilst Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Climbers sleep either in huts or under canvas in mountain tents which are warm, waterproof and roomy – perfectly suited for your Kilimanjaro adventure.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu route is the only route on the mountain that offers the comforts of sleeping huts and comfortable beds.

These are the Mandara huts, Horombo huts and Kibo huts. The huts are communal and each bunk has a sponge mattress and pillow.

What is a Typical Day's Schedule When Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro?

On a typical day starts at 0630 Hours when your waiter/ porter wakes you up and bring you a warm pan of water to wash your face and hands. Breakfast is served in a mess tent – complete with chairs, tables, dinnerware and silverware.

After, you will begin walking around 0830 Hours.

While the hours vary from day to day, your average walking time will be around 4 to 5 hours per day. Your guide decides the pace and when to take breaks depending on his assessment your performance.

The porters move ahead of the group to prepare food and set up tents before your arrival. Lunch may be a boxed lunch or hot lunch.

Once you arrive at the campsite, snacks are served. Then, before dinner, a pan of water is again provided for clean up. Dinner is served around 1800 Hours.

The guide will discuss the next day's events with the group after dinner. Down time is spent chatting with your fellow climbers, staff and others sharing the campsite, reading, or otherwise relaxing.

    Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro Summit Day
Summit day is a tough, 11 to 16 hour day.  It begins very early as guides walk you to reach Uhuru point at sunrise. Climbers go to sleep after an early dinner the night before and are awaken around midnight to prepare for the summit attempt.

After a light snack, climbers ascend in the darkness, cold and wind.

Climbing is difficult, especially on loose rock and up a very steep slope. Once you reach the summit, a short time is spent celebrating and taking photos, before returning to high camp, either Barafu or Kibo Hut.

There, you eat lunch and regain your strength, before continuing the descent to a much lower camp.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro Hotel Accommodation Options

There are two main towns – Moshi and Arusha – near Mount Kilimanjaro where trekkers base themselves for their hike.

We recommend you stay in Moshi before the climb as this saves over two hours of driving. Moshi is a small Tanzanian town which sits due south of Kilimanjaro National Park in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro.

      Kenya Wedding Packages Types

    Religious Ceremonies
Christian, Islamic, Traditional African and Hindu ceremonies are all possible and recognized under Kenyan law. The Kenyan Registrar will hold records of Christian ceremonies and Marriage Certificates are issued for those and for Hindu and Islamic ceremonies. Affidavits are issued for traditional African ceremonies.

It is important to note that many Kenyan churches use the African Christian Marriage & Divorce Act which is not suitable for non-Africans who can only get married under the Marriage Act (Cap 150/1), so ensure that you check this with your chosen church when you contact them for all their relevant terms/ conditions and paperwork.

Couples wanting an Islamic, Hindu or African ceremony should contact the Registrar of Marriages in the first instance to get further information on the terms and conditions.

    Civil Ceremonies
If a Religious Ceremony is not for you, or if you’d prefer to wed in a special location, a Civil Ceremony can be arranged. In Kenya a Civil Ceremony can be held in a Register Office or at a venue that holds a Special License for weddings (check this in advance).

    Blessings/ Renewal of Vows
Couples can organize to have a blessing ceremony to celebrate their union or married couples may choose to renew their vows. These types of event can take place in a choice of beautiful locations and with very little paperwork, though no official certificates are supplied.

    What You Need to Know
Our expert team of travel consultants can guide you through all the paperwork and planning, but here are the general requirements:

    Special License
A couple would normally need to notify their church and the office of the Registrar General at least 21 days before the wedding date. However a Special License can be issued from the Registrar of Marriages if this requirement cannot be met (i.e. if a couple are due to arrive in Kenya just a few days before the wedding). This enables the marriage to still be recognised under the Marriage Act.

A Special License is also required for a Civil Ceremony at a venue other than a Register Office.

Before travel you will need to send certain documents (see below) to the Registrar of Marriages in order to apply for the Special License. You will then need to arrive in Kenya at least 4 days in advance of your wedding in order to finalise all the paperwork.

      Kenya Wedding Packages & Safaris

Where better to celebrate your wedding than in a romantic and tranquil setting, within stunning scenery and surrounded by the sounds of the bush.

It is no wonder that such a scene set the ambiance for Prince William to propose to Kate Middleton – this is where their fairy tale began. But you don’t have to be Royalty to get treated as such in Kenya.

Service comes with a genuine smile from people that want your stay to be as perfect as you do.

To ensure a personal experience head for a private conservation area – these are Africa’s best kept secret.

These exclusive game reserves are away from the crowds and have unsurpassed game-viewing with the opportunity to see all of Africa’s “Big Five” as well as many other important species.

For example, Governors Camps, Encounter Mara, Mara Ngenche, Karen Blixen Camp, Elephant Bedroom Camp Samburu, Mbweha Camp, Lake Nakuru, Kicheche Laikipia Camp Laikipia etc offer perfect settings for unique civil ceremonies, renewal of vows or blessings.

The camps are each set on vast areas of pristine wilderness, away from other camps and lodges. Guests benefit from top-quality game drives in areas set aside exclusively for their enjoyment – these private drives get close to nature without other tourist vehicles spoiling the view.

Wedding ceremonies can be arranged at private, scenic viewpoints with stunning vistas across the game-filled landscape.

Masai traditional customs and blessings can be included to make a very special and spiritual experience.

     Climbing Mount Kenya Information Guide

Climbing Mount Kenya Fitness, Altitude And Safety
Generally speaking it isn’t necessary to undergo a grueling fitness regime prior to attempting Mount Kenya, anyone who is trek fit, and is comfortable walking 6-8 hour days should be fine.

It is recommended that you start a training program at least one, if not two months before your safari.“Running, swimming, cycling and stair-climbing is all good ways of toning up muscles.”

    Guides, Porters and Cooks
The trekking crew will usually consist of a guide, cook, porter for the cooking gear plus a personal porter per trekker. All our guides and porters are registered with Kenya Wildlife Services and hold a mountain guide park from Mt. Kenya National Park.

They also have wildlife knowledge and experience of dealing with altitude sickness issues

     Climbing Mount Kenya Routes

    There are 5 main routes to the peak. See below;

    Sirimon Route
Sirimon Route is the most popular ascent as the altitude gain is nice and steady and it offers one of the most beautiful approaches to the peaks.  Allow a minimum of 2 nights to peak when ascending, although we recommend spending an extra night at the last camp (Shipton’s) on the way up.

    Burguret Route
Burguret Route is the best if you want to avoid the crowds then Burguret is the best route.
You’ll be hacking through pristine rainforest on this little used route, spending nights at wilderness campsites.

Going up this route is challenging, it is little more than a game track in places, often muddy and rough under foot. Burguret is usually combined with a Chogoria or Sirimon descent.

    Naro Moru Route
Naro Moru Route is the most popular descent route, fast and easy (at least on the way down!). Naro Moru passes through the notorious vertical bog section which gets very waterlogged in the rainy seasons.

The vegetation is at its most striking on this route. It can be descended in one very long day, usually done in two days and one night.

    Chogoria Route
Chogoria Route is the best if you have time then choose dramatic Chogoria over Naro Moru for the descent. The Chogoria route passes by tarns, waterfalls and an incredible gorge.  Allow two or three days for your descent.

    Timau Route
Timau Route is little used nowadays; there is little forest on this side of the mountain and no facilities, just lots of wide open country.

Weather/ When To Go Climbing Mount Kenya
First things first, although Mount Kenya is on the equator, at an altitude of 4,000m it gets freezing at night!  You need to be prepared for overnight temperatures well below freezing (a good three/ four season sleeping bag is a must).

Minus 10 or even minus 20 degrees Celsius are not unheard of at Point Lenana. Otherwise expect plenty of hot overhead sun and rain if you are trekking during the short or long rains.

Kenya is subject to two rainy seasons, the long rains from mid March to mid June and the short rains from September to October. Mount Kenya remains trek-able throughout the year, but during the long rains especially, you will need to be prepared for some heavy rain falls and muddy tracks.

The good news is that even in the depth of the long rains, there is usually reliable sunshine for a good portion of the day (10am – 3pm). Outside the rainy season, you can expect plenty of sunshine.

It's safest to climb Mt. Kenya during the dry seasons: January – February and August to September off the most reliably fine weather. The main routes are likely to be more crowded at this time of the year. If you favor complete solitude over the sunny skies, try going slightly off the peak season.

It’s best to avoid the two rainy seasons from mid March until June and from late October to the end of December.

    Mount Kenya Location
From Nairobi, Mount Kenya is around a 4 hours drive (220 Kilometers). We offer round trip transport for guests from Nairobi or from any other part of the country to the Mountain.
