Balloon Flight Frequently Asked Questions
1. When is the balloon ride done?
The ride is normally done early in the mornings at approximately 0630am in time to enjoy the sunrise glow in the distant horizon. The good thing about the Mara weather is that it is conducive for balloon rides to be operated daily, throughout the year.
Our company operations base and launch site is close to Talek River bordering Masai Mara Game Reserve, but during windy times we use a launch site INSIDE the park, approximately 7 Minutes-drive (4km) from Talek Gate, just off the main Talek-Keekorok road.
2. How long does the excursion last? The flight usually lasts approximately one hour, and covers anything between 5 and 20 km from launch to landing. The total distance covered is always dependent on the wind conditions on any given day.
The entire excursion from pick up at the camp/ lodge to drop off back at the camp or lodge varies from a 4.00am departure to a 6.00am departure, depending on the close proximity/location of said camp/lodge.
There is plenty of photographic opportunities on board and also on the ground to & from the balloon excursion including game drive en-route back to your camp/ lodge by around 1030am.
3. Is there a minimum age/mobility restrictions? As a rule of thumb, we generally don't fly children under the height of the basket or under age of 3 years. There is no upper age limit, provided passengers are reasonably fit and ready to enjoy the adventurous soaring across the majestic plains.
For client’s own safety, ballooning is not suitable for pregnant ladies, persons with health conditions; heart matters, brittle bones, neck or back conditions.
Any balloon flight requires a certain amount of physical strength to climb in/out of the basket, in case the basket is standing upright OR lying on its side. People with impaired mobility may be accommodated with prior notice to helps us plan for them.
4. What should I bring with me? We encourage guests to carry binoculars, cameras and if so desirous, a “selfie stick’ to catch those very fine once-in -a-life-time moments! Dressing in layers; warm Jacket/ fleece is best for the transition from the cool, dark early morning to the relatively late morning sunrays.
It is normally cool in the early mornings and as you watch and wait for the balloons to be inflated, the chilly morning breeze can be uncomfortable. Once on board, the heat from burners above makes all around you warm.
Trousers, long sleeved shirts/tops and closed shoes come in handy in case we need to walk through some grass after landing.
5. How does the pilot control the balloon? Hot air rises…..The balloon normally glides with the wind, but at different altitudes the wind often flows in different directions; by expertly navigating this vertical landscape the pilot finds some directional control.
In order to gain or lose altitude, the pilot manipulates the temperature of the air inside the balloon envelope using burners fueled by butane gas. When heat is added, the balloon gently rises. In order to descend, the pilot allows the balloon to cool naturally.
The cooler the air inside the balloon becomes the more quickly it descends. As the balloon descends and approaches for landing the pilot will adds some bursts of heat from the burners to slow down the rate of descent and ensure landing is safely done with the expertise of a Mara Pilot.
6. Are take-offs and landings rough? Take-off is generally quite gentle, although it may be a bit fast in windy conditions. If the wind is above 15 knots at the take-off site, we will not fly due to safety concerns.
While most of the landings are smooth, some landings are what we call a “tip over” landing, where the balloon basket drags along the ground for some meters before coming to a stop lying on its side. There may be a few bumpy landings though… all steered safely to a stop.
7. Do you ever cancel a flight? What happens if my flight is canceled? We rarely cancel flights (~5 times per year), and only do so due to high winds, rain, or extremely poor visibility. If your flight is canceled you will receive a 100% refund. Or, if your safari schedule allows and there is available space in the balloons, we can attempt to fly you the following day.
8. How many people fit in the basket? Our balloons can hold a maximum of 16 people in a basket.
9. What is served at breakfast? Our breakfast is set up on the picturesque savannah plains of the Mara, typically under the shade of a single acacia tree. You will sit down to a full bush breakfast in the Kenyan style, complete with eggs-to-order, fresh juices, waiters in traditional Swahili attire, and, of course, champagne.
During breakfast, you can also peruse the photos your pilot has taken during the flight, and decide whether you would like to purchase the photos, or any of the other Hot Air Safaris merchandise on display.

Hot Air Ballooning Governors Camp Masai Mara National Reserve; Take to the skies in a hot-air balloon safari with Governors balloon Safaris – Hot Air Balloon safari comapny that launches behind Little Governors’ Camp.
Governors Balloon Safaris provides transport to and from your hotel/ lodge/ camp. Upon your request we may take you on a game drive after the Champagne Breakfast.
Some of the pick up points for Governors hot Air Balloon ride include Mara West Camp, Mara Siria Camp, Governors Private Camp, Little Governors Camp, Governors Il Moran Camp, Andbeyond Kichwa Tembo, Angama Mara, Andbeyond Bateleur, Kilima Camp, Mpata Safari Club, Sanctaury Olonana etc.
You’ll be woken early to meet your driver, who will take you to the balloon launch side. This usually takes around 45–90 minutes, and due to the early hour is mostly driven in the dark. Keep your eyes open for nocturnal creatures as you wend your way through the bush.
You will arrive just as the balloon is warming up, the burner pumping hot air into the balloon so that it slowly inflates. When everything is ready, you climb into the basket whilst it is still safely tethered, securing yourself in with a safety harness.
After a safety briefing, the pilot will increase the output of the burners and very slowly the balloon will start to rise. Catching the wind, it starts to float, rising into the air and above the trees just in time for sunrise.
For the next hour or so your pilot will skilfully manoeuvre the balloon, mostly following the Mara River. He may take it up to incredible heights for seemingly endless views over the national park, then closer to ground level to spot hippos in the Mara River or herds of buffalo heading to the water for a morning drink.
Traverse the river, keeping your eyes open and trying to spot any predators loitering along the river bank, before coming in to land in a clearing on the other side of the confluence.
Landings do vary. When we did the flight the landing was perfect – the balloon barely dragged and the basket didn’t even tip over. If there is a stronger wind, however, the basket can drag a short way and tip over.
With all the passengers inside braced against the basket and hanging on to the handles it can make for an exciting finish! Once you are safely down, the balloon crew will offer you a glass of bubbles to celebrate.
Then it’s time to head off for a cooked breakfast in the bush – and more bubbles if you fancy it. Though there is of course tea, coffee and fruit juice served alongside the cereals, eggs, toast, sausages and bacon. On a practical note, there are toilet facilities at the breakfast site.

Ruaha National Park Hot Air Balloon Safari Tanzania: One of the most tranquil game viewing experiences has to be going on a hot air balloon safari where you float over the flat landscape which teems with wildlife, notably giraffes and hippos, impalas and warthogs.
Hot air balloon rides are accessable as an activity if you are on a safari in the Ruaha National Park. Ruaha Hot Air Balloon flies above the majestic scenery and wildlife of Ruaha, mostly flying over the Ruaha River and its adjacent plains.
0500 Hours: You will be picked at around 0500 Hours and driven to the launch site near Msembe Airstrip, ready for take-off just before sunrise (around 0600 Hours). Our early morning balloon ride is launched east of Msembe, between junction R23 and the river Ruaha which provides the only permanent water source in the area.
Therefore, the wildlife congregates in the valley with many resident species. The open plains, acacia woodlands, the meandering river and its many hippo pools all produce a scenic vista seen from above.
Guests meet 20 minutes prior to sunrise at the launch site and enjoy a hot cup of tea or coffee as the hot air balloon is prepared for it its early morning flight. A safety briefing on the do’s and don’ts of hot air balloon flying is giving to all passengers and then it’s up into the sky.
In the pre-dawn, your balloon safari adventure begins as you leave your lodge or camp. It is still dark and there’s the chance you might glimpse a leopard or another nocturnal hunter on your way to the launch site.
The anticipation and excitement builds as you meet your pilot and watch the balloon being inflated as the sky lightens.
After a thorough safety briefing and demonstration of boarding and landing position, you board your balloon. Rising as the sun rises, your balloon floats in whatever direction the winds of the day are heading, over this land of baobabs and granite kopjes.
Using varying altitudes and layers of air to navigate, your pilot will skilfully guide the balloon. Each day is different, some of the flights may be low and at other times your balloon may climb to 1,000 feet or more. Nobody can predict, no two flights are ever the same and your balloon safari will be unique.
Eventually, after around one hour, depending on conditions, we must land. Ruaha Balloon lands somewhere near the Ruaha /Mwagusi River confluence, after a variety of low and high flying.
We celebrate in the traditional manner with an excellent sparkling wine before sitting down to a full English breakfast prepared and served in the bush in “Out of Africa” style, complete with bone china, linen table cloth and Sheffield cutlery.
Replete with breakfast and enduring memories, Ruaha Balloon Safaris Certificate in hand, you’ll rejoin your safari guide to continue the day’s activities.
Duration of excursion: Around 3 hours. The balloon flight lasts for roughly an hour, and is followed by a bush breakfast.

Ruaha National Park Hot Air Balloon Safari Tanzania Itinerary
0500 Hours: Wake up before dawn with a quick cup of tea or coffee and a snack before setting off on your balloon adventure. Wrap up warm and enjoy the drive to the launch site in the dark, as you may be lucky enough to encounter some nocturnal animals.
0630 Hours: On arrival at the launch site, meet your pilot and watch as your balloon is inflated ready for lift off. Launch as dawn is breaking, rise up in the sky as the sun rises. Witness the magnificent spectacle as darkness lifts, the sky is painted orange and the ground’s silhouette begins to take form.
Float along the vast plains, following the whims of the wind, watching the mighty herds below. The launch site is in a fixed location, however the landing site is always an added adventure, for everyone, as it is determined solely on the wind direction and speed.
Your pilot uses various altitudes and air layers to navigate the balloon across the rolling plains. Each flight is novel. Go from skimming the tall grass, to just missing the flat table tops of the acacias trees, to soaring high above the plains at 1000 feet in the land of eagles and vulture.
Fly over areas inaccessible to vehicles. Appreciate the awesome vistas as you float silently above the undisturbed game. No two flights are ever the same, making for a really magical experience. The flight usually lasts for about an hour, depending on conditions.
0730 Hours – 0745 Hours: Celebrate your landing in the traditional way, with some chilled champagne before heading off to a celebratory bush breakfast. Indulge in fresh fruit and a freshly cooked breakfast complete with crisp tablecloth, bone china and shiny silver ware, in the company of your fellow passengers.
0915 Hours: A fitting finale to the morning. After a leisurely breakfast, you’ll be escorted to the rendezvous point to meet your guide to continue on a game drive back to camp.
Ruaha National Park Hot Air Balloon Safari Tanzania Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do I need to book in advance?
We strongly recommend that you book in advance with African Spice Safaris to secure your spot. We have limited capacity and this exclusive adventure is frequently fully booked.
2. How much does it cost?
Request for rates at the time of booking to enjoy a discount. Prices are inclusive of all fees & taxes. The balloon safari price may vary due to exchange rates, local taxes etc.
3. When is the best time of year for ballooning in Serengeti?
We are fortunate that the weather in Ruaha National Park is suitable for ballooning almost every day of the year.
4. What about the ‘rainy seasons’? The ‘long rains’ (late March to early June) & the ‘short rains’ (November to mid December). The great migration passes through Central Serengeti during the green seasons.
At these times it USUALLY rains late afternoon and during the night. Mornings are USUALLY bright and clear with gentle winds (ideal ballooning weather!). The landscape is lush, green and dust free (yes, your vehicle may get stuck in the mud – but our balloon won’t!)
5. Do you operate year round?
Yes, we operate daily throughout the year in central Serengeti. We operate from Ruaha east of Msembe, between junction R23 and the river Ruaha
6. Are there any restrictions?
Yes, we do not carry children under the age of 7 years. There is no upper age limit, however passengers must be reasonably mobile, fit to fly and prepared for an adventure.
Ballooning is not suitable for pregnant ladies, people with mobility or health conditions (heart conditions, brittle bones, neck or back conditions). Passengers must be able to bend their knees, hold on to rope handles with both hands for take-off and landing and be able to climb into and out of the basket.
Balloon passenger weights are calculated at an average of 80 kg. Passengers weighing 50% + more than this (i.e. 120kgs / 265lbs / 19 stone) may be charged for two places.
7. I am on an organized safari with a set itinerary. Can I do this?
Yes, as long as you are staying at any of the Hotels, lodges or camps in Ruaha National Park or near Ruaha National Park. We collect you before the flight from your lodge/ camp early morning and return you to the rendezvous point at 0945 hours to join the rest of your party & continue your day’s activities
8. What should I wear? What should I bring?
It can be cool in the early morning, but often warm later, therefore a jacket or sweater that can be removed later is a good idea. A hat is recommended (bald guests) as radiant heat from the burners can be uncomfortable.
We suggest long trousers, long sleeves, preferably in natural fibers and stout shoes. Don’t forget your camera and binoculars. You can bring a camera bag or small backpack with you in the balloon.
9. Why is ballooning expensive?
Balloons baskets cost the same as a big Mercedes but only last a few hundred hours. They use a significant amount of fuel per flight and involve a minimum crew of 6 men plus professional pilot to get it in the air plus a further 10 employees behind the scenes for each balloon.
In addition, there are the retrieving vehicles, logistics, back up etc. We operate in a remote area. There is a very substantial sum in the form of concession fees for every passenger to Tanzania National Parks towards conservation funds.

A Traditional Healer is not a witch doctor, he or she does not bestow spells or curses but used herbs, roots, barks, plant to treat ailments.
Visit the King’s House:
Here you can be King for the moment or longer – you will be enthroned and installed as king and you can even exercise the powers of the king as the village elders give them up you through a village ceremony.

A Visit with the Batwa People:
The Batwa people were the original people of forest of Rwanda – they were hunters and gatherers who lived for thousands of years in the forest leaving a small ecological footprint.
They were evicted by the government when parks were established – many of them became poachers – but for the people at the village that is even behind.
They will teach you how they used to hunt and gather, even show you how to shoot a bow and arrow – it is a most interesting time – there is also the pottery making today and women making crafts of various kind. You can even have craft-making and pottery making classes here.
Traditional Dances and Music:

There are also the traditional musical instruments including drums – you will also here the famous “Songs of the Gorillas” is performed by the famous Ngayabatema who is also called the Kayuku. Sometimes you just may be asked to join in – give it a try and enjoy a new cultural experience.
Prepare a meal in the Traditional Way:
Prepare a traditional Rwandan Meal which often starts in the garden and takes some time to prepare with wood or charcoal – but finally, it is eating time. You will have a chance to try an ancient grinding stone – prepare local dishes such as Ubugari and Igikoma.
Part of a traditional meal is to have a drink and here you will be taught how to make Banana Beer and you can have a drink with your meal or just taste.
Banana Beer is often used in villages during celebrations of one kind or another and your presence at the village is reason to celebrate.

You will be briefed on how to behave while you are with the rare mountain gorillas in the habitats and all the rules must be observed at all times as explained to you by the park official.
After briefing, you will be assigned to one habituated gorilla group to track in a group of only (eight) visitors and you will be accompanied by a guide. About 14 gorilla families are available in Bwindi for both gorilla trekking and habituation experience.
