    Aberdare National Park Day Trip Safari journeys to the Central Highlands of Kenya West of Mountain Kenya to the Aberdare National Park, 180 km's from Nairobi.

    The trip takes about 3 hours of driving one way. (Note: your trip could begin from Nairobi, Thika, Nyeri, Naivasha etc). Aberdare National park has very beautiful sceneries.

    There are magnificent waterfalls namely Karuru waterfalls and Chania waterfalls.

    The Aberdare are the third highest mountain range in Kenya. They are around 100 km's long from north to south. There are two main peaks, Ol Donyo Lesatima to the north and Kinangop to the south.

    Herds of forest elephants and buffalo move almost silently through the undergrowth, while overhead loud chirping birds, Colobus monkeys and Sykes monkeys dominate the canopy.

    Other animals that are relatively easy observed include the lion, leopard and giant forest hog, which is almost twice the size as the normal warthog. Also abundant are waterbuck, reedbuck, duikers and bushbuck.

    Rarer sightings include those of the golden cat and the bongo, an elusive forest antelope that lives in the bamboo forest. Animals like the eland and serval cats can be found higher up in the moorlands.

    The Aberdare National Park also contains a large population of the black rhino. The crystal clear mountain streams are teeming with trout.

    And even the bird viewing is rewarding, with over 250 species of birds in the park.

     Aberdare National Park Day Trip Safari Itinerary

    0600 Hours: Aberdare National Park Day Trip Safari departs Nairobi after breakfast. Your drive takes you through the Kenyan Highlands, past pineapple and coffee plantations in Thika, Murang’a and Nyeri.

    0900 Hours: We arrive at the Aberdare National Park, check-in to the park and proceed on a game drive.

    The park is a forest and mountain range that starts at 1829 metres and rises to its highest point at 4001 metres above sea level.

    The mountain range is heavily forested and forms the rim of the Great Rift Valley at some point.

    The ranges gradually slope down towards Nyahururu and the forest is a mixture of dense forest on the lowlands giving way to bamboo and then the moorland towards the top.

    Our Aberdare National Park Day Trip Safari explores the dense forest at the lower level of the mountain range with many animals including the elephants, rhinos, leopards, giant forest hogs, buffalos and colobus monkeys.

    The alpine moorland and bamboo forests have the eland and bongo antelopes which are very shy and hard to spot. You will be able to spot many of these animals in your day trip.

    0930 Hours: The tour begins with a pick-up from your hotel and a drive to the Daphne Sheldrick elephant orphanage follows. After visiting with the baby Elephants, you proceed to the Giraffe Centre to get an up-close interaction with the Rothschild giraffes which includes a kiss!

    Kazuri beads factory follows next and then a lunch break at the Utamaduni Crafts. Later you visit Karen Blixen museum before returning back to your hotel/ residence.

     Elephants Giraffes Kazuri Beads Karen Blixen Tour Highlights

    Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage
    Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage situated on the outskirts of Nairobi (approximately 45 minutes drive). David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is located within the Nairobi National Park and the sanctuary cares for orphaned baby Elephants, tame black and white rhino calves and adults.

    At 1100 Hours, the baby animals are brought from the National Park for a mud-bath at the orphanage, where for an hour you can get close to them and sometimes touch them. You may not feed the animals but will get a chance to view the handlers feeding them.

    The private session strictly between 1500 Hours to 1600 Hours each day allows you to see the animals in private and you will be able to interact with them. This requires advance booking through African Spice Safaris.

    Giraffe Centre (AFEW Langata)
    Have you ever been kissed with an 18 inch tongue? Nairobi Giraffe Centre tour gives a completely up close and personal interaction where guests have the opportunity to view giraffes as well as feed them.

    The centre has rescued, hand-reared and released around 500 orphaned giraffes back into the wild since opening in 1979.

    There is also an education centre with lots of information about the Rothschild giraffes breeding and conservation of the rarest of Kenya’s three giraffe species.

    Kazuri Bead Factory and Workshop
    Next stop is the Kazuri bead centre – a self-help women project where hand made ceramics and jewellery are produced.  A visit to the workshop and craft centre will take around one hour and here you will see the various processes.

    A knowledgeable guide will show you around where you will see the whole process from the molding of raw clay through to the glazing, decorating and threading of beads as finished products. The salesroom is attractively laid out and a beautiful place to visit.

    Kazuri means "small and beautiful" in Swahili and this describes each and every beautifully hand-made ceramic bead which is shaped by hand by the women who work at the Kazuri workshop. The beads are kiln fired once, glazed and then fired again before being strung.

    Karen Blixen Museum
    Karen Blixen Museum is located on the outskirts of Nairobi on Karen road. Its history dates back to 1914, during the First World War, with the arrival of Karen Blixen from Denmark.

    At the foot of Ngong Hills, Karen Blixen established herself as a farmer. After her departure in 1931, the suburbs retained the commemorative home of Karen.

    The house was used during the filming of the famous movie that immortalized Karen Blixen's book by the same name ('Out of Africa'). The Museum has beautifully landscaped gardens and an all-encompassing Ngong Hills view. Time takes approximately 1 Hour at most.

    Giraffe Centre Karen Blixen Kazuri Bead Tour  enables you to visit 3 great locations in one tour. All situated on the outskirts of Nairobi in the Karen District, this tour takes about 4 Hours.

    Our Nairobi day tour begins with a pick-up from your hotel/ residence to Karen Blixen Museum located on the outskirts of Nairobi on Karen road. The museum history dates back to 1914, during the First World War, with the arrival of Karen Blixen from Denmark.

    The visit at the museum takes approximately an hour at most. Karen Blixen museum is exactly 5 km's (just over 3 miles) from the Giraffe Centre.

    The Giraffe Center is a wonderful and refreshing experience undertaken during African Spice Safaris city excursion. The tour gives a completely up close and personal interaction where guests have the opportunity to view giraffes as well as feed them.

    There is an impressive variety of bird's species which can be viewed through the year. The Giraffe centre visit lasts about an hour. Next stop is the Kazuri bead centre – a self-help women project where handmade ceramics and jewellery are produced.

    A visit to the workshop and craft centre will take about an hour and here you will see the various processes. A knowledgeable guide shows you around the factory.

    You will see the entire bead making process from the molding of raw clay through to the glazing, decorating and threading of beads as finished products.

    Lunch will be served at the Utamaduni "veranda" Restaurant.  The menu includes Nairobi's best Zanzibar soup ~ salads, sandwiches, steaks and fresh costal seafood selections followed by dessert – Lemon Lime Cheesecake.

    All these are prepared fresh daily in a hearty home-cooked fashion, served with typical Kenyan hospitality.

    Karen Blixen Museum Nairobi Tour visits the famous Karen Blixen Museum located on the outskirts of Nairobi on Karen road. Its history dates back to 1914, during the First World War, with the arrival of Karen Blixen from Denmark.

    The aim here is to take an individual back in time, and provide a visual impression of each settler life in Kenya. At the foot of Ngong Hills, Karen Blixen established herself as a farmer. After her departure in 1931, the suburbs retained the commemorative home of Karen.

    The Danish government donated the house and the surrounding land to Kenya after independence.The house was restored by the Danish government, and was used during the filming of "Out of Africa" which immortalized Karen Blixen's book by the same name.

    Karen Blixen Museum was opened to the public in 1986. A striking feature about Karen Blixen Museum is the beautiful grounds.

    The house built in 1910 has a red tile roof and mellow wood paneling in the rooms. When Karen Blixen bought the property, it had 6,000 acres of land but only 600 acres were developed for growing coffee; the rest was retained under natural forest.

    During your Karen Blixen Museum Nairobi tour, you will learn that much of the original furniture is on display in the house. The original kitchen has been restored, and is now open for viewing.

    A Dove stove similar to the one used by Karen Blixen is on display, as are the kitchen utensils. Reconstruction of the coffee factory, along with other old farm machinery is underway.

    Karen Blixen Museum has become a herb of various activities including private parties, research and visitation, from all over the world. The income so generated is used to refurbish and maintain Karen Blixen Museum and other regional museums.

      Karen Blixen History

    Karen Blixen (1885-1962), also known by her pseudonym, Isak Dinesen, is famous for her memoir, Out of Africa, and for several works of fiction, including Seven Gothic Tales (1934) and Winter's Tales (1942).

    A 2007 poll of opinion in her native Denmark lists Karen Blixen as one of the most representative personalities in Danish history. She was twice nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. She wrote in English, after living on a coffee farm in Kenya from 1914 to 1931.

    She married her second cousin, Baron Bror Blixen of Sweden, thereby acquiring the title Baroness. Following their separation and divorce, she had a long affair with the safari hunter, Denys Finch Hatton, son of a titled English family.

    In 1931, after losing the coffee farm in the Great Depression, Karen Blixen returned to Denmark and embarked on the writing career that lasted until her death in 1962. She was played by Meryl Streep in the 1985 film Out of Africa.

    Her memoir was arresting in many ways, especially in its oblique references to the author's love story with the English hunter Denys Finch Hatton. It left the reader tantalized by a series of enigmas: Who was the writer's husband, and what happened to him?

    Why didn't she and Finch Hatton marry? Did she ever plan to return to Africa? What was her life now?

    The answers to these questions remained private until after her death. She had married a Swede named Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke, her second cousin, from whom she took the title Baroness. Bror was the twin of the celebrated horseman, Hans von Blixen-Finecke, the man Karen was in love with in her youth.

    Bror himself wrote a book describing how he and his wife had set out to run a pioneer farm in Kenya. They divorced after eleven difficult years of marriage. She fought the divorce, and her Letters from Africa suggest that she loved her husband. Bror married again twice, but Karen did not remarry and never had children.

    Her talent for hospitality in Kenya attracted a variety of aristocratic and bohemian friends, including Berkeley Cole. She called Denys Finch Hatton the love of her life, but the nature of their relationship has never been clear.

    She appears to have suffered two miscarriages during the eight or more years of the affair. However, the writer Beryl Markham, a friend of Karen Blixen and Denys Finch Hatton, claimed to biographers that Finch Hatton was homosexual.

    Due to the world wide economic depression and miscalculations in pioneer farming, Karen Blixen's coffee farm, financed by her family, never turned a profit. She was homesick much of her time in Africa.

    Although she had her farm for nearly 18 years, she spent nearly four years of that time in her beloved Denmark. She left Kenya in 1931 and never returned.

    Literature: Karen Blixen [Isak Dinesen] can be compared with no other writers. Her voice was formed by her Scandinavian roots, and influenced by a wide variety of works of European literature.

    Her writing places emphasis on story, rather than characters, and on the philosophical understanding of personal identity. Her stories underline a fascination with the role of fate in controlling the lives of human beings.

    She believed that a person's response to the vicissitudes of fate offers a possibility for heroism and, ultimately, for immortality.

    A small selection of her literary influences include:
    *  Goethe
    *  Lord Byron
    *  Mary Shelley
    *  Walt Whitman
    *  Mozart's Don Juan
    *  Soren Kierkegaard
    *  Charles Baudelaire
    *  Shakespeare's plays
    *  Percy Bysshe Shelley
    *  Milton's Paradise Lost
