Hadzabe Bushmen Dagota Tribes Arusha Cultural Day Trip is full day excursion to visit the Hadzabe (Hadza) – an indigenous ethnic group in north-central Tanzania, living around Lake Eyasi in the central Rift Valley and in the neighboring Serengeti Plateau.

Spend a half day with the Hadzabe tribe (world’s last hunter-gathering group) and experience their way of life. Our cultural day tour begins from Karatu a small town located about 120 kms northwest of Arusha.

Departing very early in the morning our tour to visit the Hadzabe and go hunting with them takes us through on a very rough trail for 2 hours drive; the road circumnavigates the Ngorongoro crater and head south west to Mongola Village; have a contact to local tribesmen.

The Hadzabe Tribe live in the dry terrain near Lake Eyasi, south of Ngorongoro crater in Tanzania.

They have existed in this region for over 3000 years. We have time to go hunting with them for about an hour or 2, walking, running, crawling through bushes and looking in the shrubs for birds, antelopes and larger herbivores. The women gather fruits, berries, tubers and greens.

The local guide who is a member of the tribe teaches you more about how they hunt, track wildlife, make fire and even take honey from bee’s nests before introducing you to his people and explaining a little more about the customs and the way of life.

The Hadzabe people are nomads and thus don’t live in the same place for long. They only set up camp for several days or even months and then when they have harvested the resources of their current location, they move to another area.

They build homes by weaving small huts out of sticks from the euphorbia bush. The Hadzabe use bows, arrows and spears to hunt for food.

They eat roots, meat, wild fruits and use alternative medicine to treat their illnesses. They utilize sticks and grass to start fires. Their unique lifestyle makes a stay with them an interesting and stimulating experience.

Time permitting we visit the Datoga or Barbaig. See the work of a local blacksmith where spears, rings, earrings and local silver is forged and worked. Then head back to Karatu or Arusha.

      Interesting Facts About Hadza Tribe

    * They smoke a lot of pot tobacco, even young boys
    * There are estimated only 1,000 Hadza left around Lake Eyasi
    * Their language called Hadzane – is rhythmic and punctuated by clicks
    * In general Hadza tribe is non materialistic and live almost entirely free of possessions
    * Hadza tribe has lived the same way, unencumbered by the outside world, for 10,000 years
    * Hadza tribe is world’s last hunter-gathering group in Africa that are collecting 95 % of their diet from wild foods
    * Hadzas live a very free life. They don’t grow food, raise no livestock and survive strictly by hunting antelopes, baboons, birds and buffaloes
    * Hadze live in homesteads which are dotted through the Bush, in groups of 20 or so Hadza. These homesteads are not owned by any one group, each group will stay in one place for a few months, and then when the game is scarce they move on to a new boma, and at some point in the future other Hadza take their place in the old one

Day 2: Olpopongi Maasai Cultural Village – Drive to Arusha National Park
0730 Hours: After an early breakfast at Olpopongi village we depart for a 2 hour drive to Arusha National Park. Arusha National Park lies just 25 km's east of Arusha Town, and is ideal for a rewarding day trip.

The park (137km²), has terrain ranging from open savannah through acacia scrub lands to Afro-montane cloud and rain forest and Afro-alpine vegetation similar to Mount Kilimanjaro. There are several alkaline lakes and the spectacular Ngurdoto Crater.

Mammal species include elephant, buffalo, various primates, giraffe and leopard. Hiking is allowed if accompanied by an armed guard and the climb up Mount Meru is superb, often giving the best views available of Mount Kilimanjaro.

At 4,556m, Mount Meru is the fifth highest mountain in Africa and is located in the Arusha National Park.

1230 Hours: Lunch is served at Momela Wildlife Lodge.

1400 Hours: Another game drive in the park is planned. Hatari was filmed on location in Tanganyika, (in what is now Arusha National Park Northern Tanzania).

Hatari is a 1962 American film directed by Hawks and starring John Wayne John Wayne Marion Mitchell Morrison, born Marion Robert Morrison, better known by his stage name John Wayne, was an American film actor, director and producer.

He epitomized rugged masculinity and has become an enduring American icon. He is famous for his distinctive voice, walk and height. The title means "danger" in Swahili, which was mentioned in the film as well.

Portraying a group of hunters, the film presents an interesting if antiquated portrait of Africa still dominated by non-Africans. The film is extremely popular because of the dramatic wildlife chases and the magnificent backdrop scenery of Mount Meru, a dormant volcano.

1800 Hours: The tour ends in Arusha town in the evening.

After this very spiritual meeting we have a short break which you can use for some jewelry shopping or coffee and tea break.

Another highlight will be a bush walk to discover endemic plants and their usage for the Maasai people. After we board our vehicle and return back to Arusha.

Cultural insights of the Masai Tribe During Olpopongi Masai Village Tour Includes:

Learn about the History of the Masai Tribe: It is thought that the Maasai's ancestors originated in North Africa, migrating south along the Nile Valley and settled over almost all of the land in the Rift Valley as well as the adjacent land from Mount Marsabit to Dodoma.

Learn about Maasai Historical Changes: After settling in grazing lands more than two thirds of the Maasai's land in Tanzania was taken away by the British and the Tanzania government to create both ranches for settlers and Tanzania's wildlife reserves and national parks.

Learn about Maasai Culture: To be a Maasai is to be born into one of the world's last great warrior cultures. From boyhood to adulthood, young Maasai boys begin to learn the responsibilities of being a man (herder) and a warrior.

The role of a warrior is to protect their animals from human and animal predators, to build kraals (Maasai homes) and to provide security to their families.

Learn about Maasai Homes: Since the Maasai lead a semi-nomadic life, their houses are loosely constructed and semi-permanent.

They are usually small, circular houses built by the women using mud, grass, wood and cow-dung. The men build the fences and sheds for the animals.

Learn about  Maasai clothes, dressing and beauty: Though they traditionally dressed in animal skins, Maasai woman with beaded jewelry – everyday Maasai dresstoday, typical Maasai dress consists of red sheets, (shuka), wrapped around the body and loads of beaded jewelry placed around the neck and arms.

These are worn by both men and women and may vary in color depending on the occasion.

Learn about Maasai faith and religion: In their monotheistic traditional beliefs, the Maasai god (Enkai or Engai) was manifested in two forms: the black god, who was benevolent; and the red god, who was vengeful.

Today most of the Maasai tribe is Christians and a minority is Muslims.

Learn about Maasai food: All of the Maasai's needs for food are met by their cattle. They eat the meat, drink the milk and, on occasion, drink the blood.

Bulls, oxen and lambs are slaughtered for meat on special occasions and for ceremonies. The by-products of the animals – skin and hides – are used as bedding while cow dung is used for building (it is smeared on the walls).

Learn about The Maasai tribe today: The effects of modern civilization, education and western influence have not completely spared this unique and interesting tribe.

Some of the Maasai tribe's deep-rooted culture is slowly fading away. Customs, activities and rituals such as female circumcision and cattle raiding have been outlawed by modern legislation.

Maasai children now have access to education and some Maasai have moved from their homeland to urban areas where they have secured jobs. It’s a culture that is eroding quickly.
