Arusha Cultural Day Tour: Nkoaranga Village is a full-day cultural excursion to Nkoaranga Village in the northern Tanzania highlands, near Mount Meru, specifically in the Arusha region. This village is 25 km east of Arusha, near the small township of USA-RIVER.
Nkoaranga village is approximately 30-45 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Nkoaranga Village’s full-day excursion provides valuable insight into the history and culture of the local community.
This is home to a local fair-trade coffee growers’ cooperative, comprising small-farm coffee growers working together to build a sustainable, naturally grown, fair-trade coffee business. Visit coffee plantations and see the different stages of coffee production. Learn about how coffee beans are collected, processed, roasted, ground, and carefully packed.
All proceeds from coffee sales are returned to local farmers for reinvestment in the project and to build their burgeoning organic farming operation, with the first organic bean harvest scheduled within the next two years.
Lunch is taken in the village before you return to Arusha. A walk through the village allows you to see the oldest Lutheran church in Mt. Meru. You will visit a primary or secondary school or a children’s orphanage. As you walk to the farm, you will see small shambas (farms), where people grow bananas, maize, beans, and other vegetables and fruits.

Arusha Cultural Day Tour Nkoaranga Village Itinerary
0900 Hours: After a leisurely breakfast at your hotel/residence, you will depart by road for the transfer to the village of Nkoaranga. From Nkoaranga, your guide will take you through small villages to Sura, at about 1,600 meters above sea level.
On the walk, you will pass small farms and different plantations, including bananas, maize, potatoes, and coffee. On your walk, you will pass houses hidden among the banana plants, and if locals and children spot you, no doubt they will come to say hello.
The children are always keen to talk to you when they spot a foreign tourist. At the top of the trail, on a clear day, you will have great views of both Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro. Here you will stop for refreshments.
At a nearby farm, you will meet a farmer who grows coffee, bananas, and maize. You will also learn about coffee production and can even try roasting your coffee. If you love to walk, you can go all the way up to the forest reserve and see the water sources.
In Nkoaranga, you visit an orphanage for infants and toddlers. You will have a short stop to make some new friends and see how everyone is doing.
1300 Hours: After this scenic walk, back in the village, you will be served a delicious African lunch including chapati, fried banana (matoke), ugali, meat sauce, and lots of fresh local fruit.
1400 Hours: A walk through the village allows you to see the oldest Lutheran church in Mt. Meru. You will visit a primary or secondary school. As you walk to the farm, you will see small shambas (farms), where people grow bananas, maize, beans, and other vegetables and fruits.
1700 Hours: You will return to your hotel later in the evening. It is also possible to purchase fresh coffee produced by the village’s farmers.
