Karen Blixen Museum Finch Hattons Memorial grave day tour to Karen Blixen House Museum located in Karen and the memorial grave yard of Finch hattons in the outskirts of Nairobi at the foot of the Ngong Hills. combines a visit

Denys George Finch Hatton (born on 24th April 1887 – Died on the 14th May 1931) was an aristocratic big-game hunter and the lover of Baroness Karen Blixen (also known by her pen name as Isak Dinesen).

Karen Blixen wrote about him in her autobiographical book Out of Africa, first published in 1937. In the book, his name is hyphenated: "Finch-Hatton".

Our tour begins with a visit to Karen Blixen’s house which has been wonderfully preserved with some beautiful antiques, a wide veranda, old outdoor kitchen with original utensils and then a rolling lawn with a view of the Ngong hills.

Karen Blixen Museum history dates back to 1914, during the First World War, with the arrival of Karen Blixen from Denmark. At the foot of Ngong hills, Karen Blixen established herself as a farmer. After her departure in 1931 the suburbs retained the commemorative home of Karen

Once you have finished your visit in the museum you will be driven up to the Ngong Hills to Denis Finch Hatton’s grave – a memorial to Karen Blixen’s lover. It is located inside a Kikuyu garden.

Later we return back to the city and drop you off at your residence.

Karen Blixen Museum Finch Hattons Memorial Grave Day Tour Itinerary

0800 Hours: Depart from your hotel and drive south to the leafy suburb of Karen (Named after Karen Blixen). To have a context for the day and Karen’s life we visit her house and farm (which is now a museum) from where she wrote her book out of Africa.

From here we continue south around 20 kilometers to the Ngong Hills. Views of these hills were loved by Karen and her now the burial grounds for Karen’s lover Denys Finch Hatton. After a walk across the hills and a picnic lunch we return to Nairobi.

1600 Hours: We are back at hotel/ residence.

Brief History of Karen Blixen Life in Africa

A very famous Dane, Karen was born in Denmark in 1885. She achieved international fame from writing her life story which was published and then made into the movie Out Of Africa.

She came to African after an arranged marriage to her cousin Baron Von Blixen, She bought Bogani House which included 6000 acres and started a coffee farm – although she wasn’t very successful for a number of reasons, like bad soil, locust plague, drought and finally a factory fire.

So she ended up bankrupt and had to auction all her belongings, including the house to pay her dept. After the sale of the house in 1931 she left Africa bound for Denmark where she died in 1962.

The museum was bought in 1959 by the Danish government and was given as a present to Kenya on independence day in 1963. Karen was a great painter and a writer and loved hunting.

At her home, which is now a museum you can see old photographs plus some of the original furniture, paintings and books she wrote.

From Karen Blixen’s house there were great views to the Ngong hills. From this small range of four peaks there are breathtaking views of Nairobi city and across the vast plains of the great Rift valley.

The word “Ngong” means knuckles – and from a distance the hills ridges do resemble knuckles of a hand. Legend has it that a giant God stumbled while digging the rift valley and the imprint of his fist left the ridge’s four peaks.

The hills extend around 15 km’s north to South and have an average of around 2350 meters; There is a mixture of woodland, farmland, thick grasses and wild flowers.

You are unlikely to come across large game while trekking although you may see antelopes, zebra, giraffe, bushbuck and buffalo. There are a large variety of birds species resident to the hill.

And depending on your route and interest you will make a stop and pay your respect at Denys Finch Hatton final resting place.

Kampala Day Tour Sezibwa Falls Buganda Cultural Experience is an excursion to Sezibwa Falls – a Buganda Cultural Heritage Site that is located near Lugazi town in Mukono District.

It is situated only 20 miles/ 32 km's on the Kampala – Jinja Highway and about 1.5 km's off. The Sezibwa Falls are on the Ssezibwa River and are about 7 meters high.

The falls preserve an ancient African culture and has for ages been a site of traditional cultural rituals for traditional believers.

Today the Baganda people still come here to seek out those who practice traditional healings and are purported to perform miracles.

This  Heritage site is owned by the Anglican Church of Uganda which is quite evangelical in nature – Baptisms are performed below the falls and Christians come here to pray and spend times of inner reflection.

The captivating natural beauty of Sezibwa falls has since transformed the site into a popular destination for exciting nature adventures as well as cultural experiences.

Visitors to the Sezibwa Falls are rewarded with refreshing views of the waterfalls stambling over the rocks with a gush, a lush green environment, an impressive birdlife & wildlife, beautiful rocks, and a serene, peaceful and cool atmosphere.

Kampala day tour Sezibwa falls Buganda cultural experience departs Kampala after breakfast and you spend the better part of the morning hiking, exploring the falls, bird watching and a visit to the traditional Buganda Shrines.

Kampala Day Tour Sezibwa Falls Buganda Cultural Experience | What to Do and See

Nature Walks & Sightseeing: The scenery is simply amazing! The calm river emerges from the thickets, stumbles over the sharp rocks & plunges into a whirlpool 7 meters below before continuing on a very calm course.

There are walking trails around Sezibwa you can take on to explore the beautiful surrounding and sight beautiful wildlife and sceneries.

Rock Climbing: Big sharp rocks span across the falls to form a sort of cliff. These are quite challenging to hike around, but it only gets exciting with all the great views from the top and some wildlife encounters such as skinks, lizards & sometimes snake sunbathing.

For experienced swimmers, there is no better thrill than jumping from the rocks and plunging into the cool whirlpool.

Cultural Experience: Sezibwa falls is a Buganda Heritage Site that preserves an important ancient culture that is now rare after introduction of foreign religions.

Visit the shrines and learn about the interesting traditional religion of the Baganda people and the ancient spirits that are believed to have created the Sezibwa Falls.

At the shrines you encounter items used in traditional worship such as coffee beans, spears, cowries shells, bark cloth, calabashes, and pots, items that were used by the ancestors.

Bird Watching: With about 150 bird species, Sezibwa is an impressive birding destination. Look out for Cormorants, Kingfishers, Parrots, Bee-eaters, Sunbirds, Doves, Swallows, Mankins, Turacos, and Finches. Allow up to 3 hours to maximize your bird list.

Mombasa 1 day tour visit school home orphanage is a full day excursion to one on the many children’s schools/ homes/ orphanages  within easy reach from your hotel/ residence in Mombasa North Coast or South Coast.

In Kenya the term ‘orphanage’ spans a variety of institutions including children’s homes, care centres and rehabilitation centre’s.

These organizations care for children who have been orphaned, abandoned or abused and have no other place to go.

Having lived tragic lives without love and affection the main thing most of these children need is some care and attention. Your 1 day tour to one of these centres will be deeply fulfilling.

Many orphanages and children’s centre’s open their doors to other impoverished children during the daytime by providing feeding programmes or a community school in order to benefit both the children living there and the wider community.

Depending on the time you have at hand you may help in the day-to-day care of the orphans, running of the orphanage, helping with feeding and food preparation etc.

You could also join in play time, arranging extra curricular activities, sports, arts and crafts, entertainments and generally bringing fun and affection to the lives of these vulnerable and deprived kids.

You may also be asked to help teach a variety of essential subjects such as basic English, Math’s, reading, and indeed anything else in which you have experience.

You may also work with young children and babies who either have no family or are from very deprived backgrounds.

Some of the children are suffering from HIV or AIDS and have been abandoned or are too sick to go to school, others may have been subject to abuse.

Most of the children are in need of love and affection and you will be utterly astounded to see how much your care and attention can change their lives.

Some of the schools, home and orphanges we visit in Mombasa north coast include: Lioness Cubs Home (Kikambala), Mikoroshoni School (Shanzu), Cannan Orphanage (Mombasa) and Wema Centre (Mombasa).

Others include Kikambala Children's Home/ Nursery School (Kikambala), Tabarak Children's Home (Kisauni), Shanzu Orphanage Home (Shanzu), Good Life Orphanage (Mtwapa), Mji wa Salama Children's home (Makande Mombasa) etc.

In south coast we may visit Shikamana School for orphans and disadvantaged Children at Diani, Diani Children’s Village, UPENDO Children's Village, SOS Children's Village Mombasa, Salvation Army Mombasa Children's Home, Footprints is an orphanage out in the Shimba Hills near Diani etc amongst others.

Mida Creek Gedi Ruins Mombasa 1 Day Tour: an excellent full day excursion from Mombasa that combines a visit to Mida Creek Reserve (recognized International Bird Area) and the Gede Ruins Museum – remains of a Swahili town which traces its origin to the 12th Century.

Our Mombasa day tour begins with a drive to Mida Creek – located to the east of Arabuko-Sokoke Forest on your way to Watamu in Malindi.

Mida Creek is approximately 6 km’s long, and is lined by mangrove forests that form the ecology for many species of birds as it forms a major stop over for the migratory birds.

Mida Creek Reserve activities include bird-watching, fishing, mangrove walks, and leisure canoe rides with friendly tour guides and canoe drivers.

The highlight of the tour includes a walk on one-of-a-kind suspended board walk that winds through the mangrove forest canopy. Guests get a chance to experience an overhead view of the scenic creek and its surroundings.

We have lunch at the 'The Crab Shack Restaurant' which looks out to stunning views of Kirepwe Island. Access to the restaurant is via a 200 meter boardwalk.

Lunch includes fresh oysters on a bed of ice and lime, Prawns, calamari, crab samosas and soft drinks.

After lunch our Mombasa day tour takes us to Gede ruins – a remains of a Swahili town. It traces its origin to the 12th Century and was rebuilt with new town walls in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries.

The museum has numerous ruins, comprising mosques; a magnificent palace and houses all nestled within 45 acres of forest. Experience the mystical cultural life in this old town amidst our natural heritage.

After a guided tour of Gedi ruins we transfer back to Mombasa.
