Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Mausoleum Memorial Museum day tour is a full day excursion from Mwanza to Butiama – President Nyerere’s birthplace and hometown which lies within the Mara Region.

Butiama is located in the north-western side of Serengeti National Park, 60 km's from Ndabaka Gate (Western gate to Serengeti National Park). Butiama town is a 3 hour drive from Mwanza and once there, you will meet the Wazanaki ethnic group which is believed to be the smallest tribe in the region.

Our day tour offers you an opportunity to visit President Nyerere’s Memorial Museum, family home and his mausoleum which is now open to the public.

The museum displays documents of the life of this great statesman from his earliest days at Tabora Boys Secondary School, when he began his political career in the early 1950s, through to his contribution in the fight for Tanganyika‘s independence.

It includes his 23-year presidency, his life in politics until his voluntary retirement in 1985 to when he finally died on the 14th of October 1999.

The tour includes a guided walk around his homestead followed by a walk through traditional Wazanaki village learn more about the culture and then proceed to visit Kyarano dam, and the farms of Mwalimu Nyerere.

Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Mausoleum Memorial Museum Day Tour Itinerary

0800 Hours: Depart Mwanza and drive north toward Musoma. Observe the magnificent rolling landscapes during your journey. It is also possible to see zebras along the road as well as Masai tribesmen tending their flocks. The journey from Mwanza to Butiama takes about 3 hours.

1100 Hours: Arrive at Butaima, Mwalimu Nyerere homestead. Mwalimu Nyerere was a world famous scholar, writer and co-founder of the African National Liberation from colonialism.

He led his Tanzanian nation into a union of two independent countries, Tanganyika and Zanzibar, the only United Republic in Africa. During his leadership he promoted a philosophy of African love and collectivization implying family hood and African socialism.

A selfless and unselfish leader he matched the likes of Mahtama Gandhi. Although he died in 1999 he is still fondly called the Father of the Nation and frequent references are still made to the excellence of his leadership.  His home and tomb lies in Butiama.

Nyerere’s father was the chief of the Zanaki tribe.  In addition to the museum, there is a complex of several buildings including traditional tribal huts, Nyerere’s original home and the new one built using the retirement fund of Tanzanian military veterans.

Unfortunately, Nyerere’s was able to live only two weeks in this house before he died on 14 October, 1999 at the age of 77. Across the street is the Roman Catholic Church where he frequently attended Catholic Mass.

At the museum there are many exhibitions with explanations in Kiswahili and English. For example, the wording of his Gandhi Peace Prize of 1995 is written in English. There are exhibitions of Nyerere’s ordinary possessions such as his clothing, garden tools and walking stick.

There are also many gifts given to him by foreign visitors or during trips outside of Tanzania. There are also many honorary awards and academic degrees he received as well as pictures of him with world leaders include the Pope.

Outside the museum there is a cemetery across for the Marble Mausoleum where Nyerere was laid to rest. It is decorated with plastic flowers and a popular place for picture taking.

This small building is separated from the others and is very impressive and a nice place for quiet reflection on his contribution to the human family.

Nairobi Hiking Tour 5 km Oloolua Nature Trail Karen is an excursion to Oloolua Nature Trail situated 20 km's from the city centre in the Karen suburb.

Activities include: jogging, picnic, camping, short hikes, bird watching guided tours in the forest, visiting the caves, swamps and waterfalls.

Oloolua covers 250 hectares of indigenous tropical dry forest and is home to the Institute of Primate Research (IPR).

The National Museums of Kenya, the institution that runs this bio-medical research facility, established the 5 km's (3 miles) long Oloolua Nature Trail in part of this forest, providing an oasis of tranquility for city residents looking to escape the city hustle and bustle.

The Oloolua Nature Trail is a favourite with visitors coming to do a short hike, to jog along the trail, to walk their dogs, or just for a relaxing picnic in this serene setting.

Organized groups also come to learn about environmental conservation through guided tours in the forest.

Nairobi Hiking Tour 5 KM Oloolua Nature Trail Karen

The Oloolua nature trail meanders through thick forest vines and undergrowth below giant indigenous trees and bushes, in some places following the course of the Mbagathi River that cuts through the forest.

Giant riverside bamboo stands beckon you to descend some rickety stairs to the river and rest on benches built under the bamboo. Trickling water and chirping birds, the only sounds you hear as you rest, lull you into a reflective mood.

Further along the trail close to the river, you encounter a 33 meter long cave. If you brought a flashlight with you, an exploration of this dark subterranean world takes you through numerous underground caverns reputed to have once been home to Mau Mau freedom fighters during the colonial period of Kenya’s History.

A thick pile of guano underfoot and the occasional disturbance of bats flitting past you bring to your attention the existence of a bat colony within. A papyrus swamp further down the river offers a further glimpse into the rich biodiversity of this indigenous forest.

From here on, the trail climbs out of the river valley, occasional bursting upon glades bathed in bright sunlight before diving back under the canopy of the cool forest cover.

A picnic site complete with benches, drop toilets and trash bins offers a nice setting for couples or groups to rest, play or enjoy a meal within the forest.

For those wishing to spend more than a day in the forest, a secure campsite is also available complete with tap water, drop toilets, and firewood for lighting a bonfire.

You’ll have to bring your own tent, food and cooking utensils though. Last and perhaps the most spectacular of the attractions in the forest is a 20-foot waterfall close to the forest entrance.

As you pick your way along the trail to the waterfall, you’ll go past a wooden tower that was constructed some years back for viewing a Crowned Eagle’s nest that was situated nearby.

Scientists used this tower to study the Crowned Eagle’s behaviour in its natural habitat. Sadly, human activities and settlements close to the forest have resulted in the birds migrating from this haven.

Nairobi Park Baby Elephants Giraffe Centre Karen Blixen museum tour is a full day excursion that includes a visit to 4 of the top-rated tourist attractions and places to visit in Nairobi.

These fun places include the Nairobi National Park, Sheldrick’s Elephant Orphanage, Giraffe Centre and the Karen Blixen Museum.

0530 Hours: The tour begins with a pick up from your hotel and a visit to the Nairobi National Park.

0600 Hours: You arrive at the Nairobi National Park and proceed for an early morning game drive where you are likely to see at least 4 of the legendary "Big 5" of Africa on a game drive.

Other animals include lion, cheetah, leopard, giraffe, buffalo, hippo, rhino, zebra, gazelle, impala, eland, hartebeest, wildebeest, hyena, jackal, civet cat and many more.

1100 Hours: We find ourselves at the Daphne Sheldrick Animal Orphanage, located in a secluded area of the Nairobi National Park, where orphaned baby elephants amongst other animals are taken care of by a dedicated team of conservationists.

Here we enjoy seeing the baby elephants being fed and playing. In addition, a keeper gives us a talk about the elephants, where they came from, how they are getting on, and how some of the previous orphans are progressing. You can get really close to the elephants.

The orphanage also takes in rhinos and so if you are lucky you will get the chance to see a young rhino.

1230 Hours: Next we take a lunch break at the Tamambo Coffee Garden Restaurant – located in a peaceful setting on Karen Road, on the site of the original farmhouse belonging to Karen Blixen, and next to the current Karen Blixen Museum.

1430 Hours: After a sumptuous lunch we visit the Giraffe Centre. The opportunity to observe the Rothschild’s Giraffe at close quarters and feed it is simply priceless. The Giraffe Centre has a raised feeding platform that places visitors at eye level with these animals.

You will enjoy taking pictures as you feed the giraffes with pellets.

1600 Hours: Our next stop is the Karen Blixen Museum – one of the national museums of Kenya. The museum is an old farmhouse and grounds that lie at the base of the Ngong Hills. If you are a fan of the movie or book Out of Africa, then this museum will be a treat.

Here we learn about Karen Blixen life and struggles to keep her estate and along the way her growing understanding and love for the culture and people around her.

1800 Hours: Later we return back to our hotel/ residence after a fun filled day.

Crater Lake Sanctuary Lake Naivasha boat ride 1 day tour is a day excursion from Nairobi to Crater Lake Conservancy located 10 km's from Naivasha town and about 90 km's from Nairobi.

The tour includes activities such as game drives in Crater Lake Game Sanctuary, visit to Lake Olodien home to large numbers of flamingoes, lunch at Elsamere – home to the late Joy and George Adamson and an hour-long boat ride on Lake Naivasha.

0700 Hours: Our lake Naivasha day tour begins by a pick-up from your hotel/ residence and journeys to the Rift Valley town of Naivasha.

0800 Hours: En-route we will stop at the Great Rift Valley view point to enjoy the magnificent views of the Rift valley, Mt Longonot and Lake Naivasha at a distance.

Our journey continues to Naivasha past the flower farms to Lake Olodien. Lake Olodien was once part of Lake Naivasha, but because of reducing water levels over the years, land has now appeared between the two lakes.

At times it has also become home to large numbers of flamingoes who have migrated from Lake Nakuru (because of reduced water and algae levels). From the shore, you can often see hippo and a large flock of cormorants which are protected there.

Proceed to Crater Lake Conservancy where you can walk to the rim of this beautiful small volcanic crater for views down to the emerald-green Crater Lake. At times, flamingo populations have boomed, having also migrated from Lake Nakuru to take up residence here.

With your guide you can walk through the conservancy area spotting wildlife such as giraffe, zebra, eland and gazelle, while admiring the various species of plants and spotting some of the 400 species of birds reported in this area.

1230 Hours: Later we proceed for lunch at Elsamere – the former home of the late Joy and George Adamson, of Born Free fame. After a sumptuous lunch, relax in the beautiful gardens overlooking the lake.

You can also take a nature walk in the gardens to look for bird and plant species found at Elsamere Conservation Centre or watch a video about the Adamsons’ and their conservancy work, and see artifacts and paintings in their museum.

1500 Hours: Proceed for a boat ride on Lake Naivasha. The boat ride offers a great opportunity to get close to Cormorants drying their wings, Pink Backed Pelicans, Herons, colorful Kingfishers and Fish Eagles.

Other birds seen around the lake include the Goliath Heron, Jacana, Great White Egret, White Fronted Bee-eater and the Saddle- billed Stork.

1630 Hours: Late afternoon, return to Nairobi.

Nairobi National Park Elephant Orphanage Giraffe Centre Tour: explore 3 of the best Nairobi attractions on our full day excursion. Visit the Nairobi National Park, Daphne Sheldrick’s Elephant Orphanage and the Giraffe Centre (AFEW) located in Langata.

0545 Hours: Our day tour begins by a pickup from your hotel/ residence and a short transfer to Nairobi National Park located 15 minutes from downtown city center.

0600 Hours: We arrive at the Nairobi National Park in time for an early morning game drive. This game park is truly unique and hosts over 100 mammals and up to 500 species of permanent and migratory birds.

It is possible to see all of the big five, except elephants, as the park is too small to support them. Residents include: lion, cheetah, leopard, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hyena, baboon, monkey, warthog, hippo, crocodile and a dozen species of antelope.

Bird specialties include: marabou stork, vultures, hawk eagles, secretary birds, ostrich, and bustard. Fenced on three sides, the park’s southern side is open allowing animals to migrate towards the Masai plains and Amboseli.

Animal numbers are greatest during the dry season when external water sources dry up and they can take advantage of dams in the park.

1030 Hours: We proceed to Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage located within the park. Made even more popular by the BBC’s show ‘Elephant Diaries’, this is where you can get up close and learn about the complex life of baby elephants (and sometimes baby rhino).

During your hour-long visit you will be informed about the success of raring baby Elephant orphans and reintroducing them back into Kenya’s wild.

1100 Hours: You will be at the orphanage for their feeding and play time which is a delight to watch.

1200 Hours: We proceed for lunch at the Carnivore restaurant, Tamambo or any other restaurant of your choice within Karen Blixen Estate.

1400 Hours: After a sumptuous lunch we transfer to the Giraffe Centre located in Langata. The Giraffe Center is a wonderful and refreshing experience undertaken during this African Spice Safaris city excursion.

The tour gives a completely up close and personal interaction where guests have the opportunity to view giraffes as well as feed them. Time takes approximately 1 hour at most.

1600 Hours: After enjoying and learning about the giraffe you will transfer back to your hotel/ residence.

1800 Hours: Arrive back at your hotel.

Mount Meru Climbing Trekking Trip Tanzania: Mt. Meru is located in the heart of Arusha National Park and it is 50 miles west of Mount. Kilimanjaro. Mt. Meru is a massive volcano reaching 14,980 feet (4,565 meters).

This trek serves as an ideal warm up for Mount Kilimanjaro due to its altitude acclimatization and hiking distances. This trek is also geared towards hikers that prefer less crowds and a challenging ascent.

Because Mount Meru is located in Arusha National Park, hikers must climb with an armed ranger due to the wide range of wildlife living on the mountain. On the lower slopes of the mountain, hikers are more likely to see elephants, giraffes and buffalo!

As hikers continue their ascents, the trail follows the north rim of the volcano’s crater along a dramatic ridge line. Throughout the climb, hikers sleep in designated huts along the trail.

Hikers reach the summit as the sun is rising and they will have spectacular views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and of the Mt. Meru Crater.
