Hot Air Balloon Safari Masai Mara National Reserve: Experience the magic of a hot air baloon flight over the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Our pilots and baloon crew will ensure a safe, enjoyable and informative adventure that will be one of the highlights of your visit to Big Game Country…

Our early morning balloon ride is launched at the Skyship site not far from the Great Mara River; about ten minutes drive from the Andbeyond Kichwa Tembo Camp. The balloon flight is launched between 6:00am and 6:30am (sunrise).

Often referred to as the 8th wonder of the world, the Masai Mara is a place that has to be visited. Viewing it from above ground level is an experience of a lifetime that will truly be with you forever. It is a rare and precious adventure never to be forgotten.

The pickup time from your hotel/ lodge or camp in the Mara is usually between 0500 Hours to 0530 Hours while the drop off time is between 0930 hours and 1030 Hours.

You meet up before sunrise and coffee is served while you watch your hot air balloon being inflated and prepared for flight. After a safety briefing you should be airborne in time to witness the sunrise.

Then a change in altitude to search for a favorable wind that will allow you to drift gently over the landscape on your hot air balloon safari. The balloon travels 15 to 25 km depending on wind conditions.

The gentle and silent nature of the Masai Mara Hot Air Balloon flight allows the passengers to view the wildlife from a comfortable distance. The balloon flight takes you over the diverse habitats of the Masai Mara Reserve; the great Mara River, swamps, forests, wildlife and the African Savannah.

The big five; the lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo can be seen frequently along with other animals such as hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, birds and many more.

Sooner or later you have to come down again from your ballooning experience. Upon landing, a champagne breakfast is served in the open plains of the Masai Mara.  Sparkling wine and fruit juice is served after the hot air balloon safari, depending on weather conditions

Once breakfast is over the passengers are taken back to their lodges and camps en route a game drive.

2. What’s the duration of the flight?
The average flight duration is 1 hour traveling approximately 15 to 25 km depending on wind conditions.

3. What is the launch time and drive to the launch site?
Launch time is between 6:00 and 6:30am (sun rise), it is a 10 minute drive from Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp to our launch site.

4. How high do we fly?
We can fly from a few centimeters above the ground up to 12,500 ft above sea level, legally above 12500 feet A.G.L oxygen needed.

5. How do we get to the launch site and back to the hotel?
We provide transport to and from your hotel/lodge/camp. Upon your request we may take you on a game drive after the Champagne Breakfast.

6. Where do we land?
It all depends on the wind on any given day – 95% of days the wind takes us south, deep into the Masai Mara Reserve where we land.

7. How does the pilot control the balloon?
The pilot controls the vertical access by heating or cooling the balloon (envelope). If the pilot adds heat to the envelope the balloon goes up and if he lets the envelope cool, the balloon will go down. If the pilot wants to stay buoyant in equilibrium, he will keep the envelope at the same temperature.

The balloons fly by the wind. If there are winds of different direction in different heights the pilot can go up or down and steer the balloon according to the direction of the wind.

Olumara Tented Camp 3 Days 2 Nights Flying Safari Package takes you to the Masai Mara Koiyaki Lemek Conservancy and next to Olare Orok River.

Masai Mara is a photographer's haven and Olumara Tented Camp is located in an area which great for both day and night game drives.

Local game include elephant, Butchells zebra, Masai giraffe, lesser kudu, Grant's gazelle, lions, cheetahs, rhinos, elands, the rare honey badgers as well as our occasional spotted resident leopard.

Your accommodations will be at the luxurious Olumara Tented Camp with only 11 spacious luxury tents with en-suite bathrooms, hot and cold running water, showers and flushed WCs.

The camp is located in Masai Mara, 270 miles from Nairobi (five hours by road). All weather air strip – less than an hour from Nairobi by plane.

Olumara Tented Camp offers daily game drives (private vehicles can also be arranged), Night game drives during which aardvarks, striped hyenas, honey badgers and the spotted eagle owl can be viewed, guided walks, ornithological tours, bush lunches, breakfasts and picnics.
