Arusha National Park

This unique 2-day Tanzania road safari combines Arusha National Park that offers a classical wildlife viewing with traditional cultural encounters at  “Olpopongi “Maasai Cultural Village & Museum.

First, travel to Arusha National Park located about 30 km south-west of Arusha town (45 minutes’ drive) for a safari wildlife experience. There are a range of activities to do in Arusha National Park.

This includes walking safaris which are always accompanied by a ranger and last for a maximum of four hours, during which you would stop for a break at one of the park’s lovely picnic sites. You can also explore the far reaches of the park by vehicle, taking in some of the lovely views and keeping an eye out for wildlife.

Another great activity here and one not found in other safari parks in Tanzania, is a canoeing safari which allows you to explore the Momela Lakes.  Although small, the park has a wealth of wildlife including Colobus Monkeys, Velvet Monkeys, Bushbucks, Buffaloes, Red forest Duikers, Hippos, Elephants and Giraffes.

Also, more than 400 species of birds have been recorded in the park, such as pelicans, flamingos, hornbills, fish and snake eagles and buzzards. The park’s three most significant features include the Mount Meru (Tanzania’s second highest peak), the beautiful Momela Lakes and the 3km wide Ngurdoto Crater.

When the clouds are clear you can even see the snow-capped peaks of the Kilimanjaro. Accommodation near Arusha National Park includes Hatari Lodge (Inside Arusha National Park), Runako Lodge, Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge and Lake Duluti Lodge.

The following morning you leave Arusha National Park and drive for 2-hour (85 km’s) journey to “Olpopongi “Maasai Cultural Village & Museum located in Maasai-land West Kilimanjaro.

Here you spend the day learning about the Masai tribe, culture and way of life.  You will able to visit a Museum and take a village tour, have a traditional lunch, take a walking safari in the Maasai territory, learn about Maasai hunting techniques and about incredible natural medicine.

Later in the day we return to Arusha town, where our 2-day Tanzania short Safari finishes.

Safari Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: Arusha – Drive to Arusha National Park

0730 Hours: After an early breakfast at your hotel in Arusha, we depart for an Arusha National Park located about 30km south-west of Arusha town (45 minutes’ drive) for a safari wildlife experience.

The park (137 km²), has terrain ranging from open savannah through acacia scrublands to Afro-montane cloud and rain forest and Afro-alpine vegetation similar to Mount Kilimanjaro. There are several alkaline lakes and the spectacular Ngurdoto Crater.

Mammal species include elephants, buffalo, various primates, giraffes, and leopards. Hiking is allowed if accompanied by an armed guard and the climb up Mount Meru is superb, often giving the best views available of Mount Kilimanjaro.

At 4,556m, Mount Meru is the fifth highest mountain in Africa and is located in the Arusha National Park.

1230 Hours: Lunch is served at Momela Wildlife Lodge.

1400 Hours: Another game drive in the park is planned. Hatari was filmed on location in Tanganyika, (in what is now Arusha National Park Northern Tanzania).

Hatari is a 1962 American film directed by Hawks and starring John Wayne Marion Mitchell Morrison, born Marion Robert Morrison, better known by his stage name John Wayne, was an American film actor, director and producer.

He epitomized rugged masculinity and has become an enduring American icon. He is famous for his distinctive voice, walks, and height. The title means “danger” in Swahili, which was mentioned in the film as well.

Portraying a group of hunters, the film presents an interesting if antiquated portrait of Africa still dominated by non-Africans. The film is extremely popular because of the dramatic wildlife chases and the magnificent backdrop scenery of Mount Meru, a dormant volcano.

1800 Hours: The tour ends in Arusha town in the evening.
